Welcome to International Students Day!

International Students' Day is an international observance of student community, held annually on November 17. Originally commemorating the Nazi German storming of Czech universities in 1939 and the subsequent killing and sending of students to concentration camps, a number of universities now mark it, sometimes on a day other than November 17, for a nonpolitical celebration of the multiculturalism of their international students.

The date commemorates the anniversary of the 1939 German Nazi storming of the University of Prague after demonstrations against the killing of Jan Opletal and worker Václav Sedláček as well as against the German occupation of Czechoslovakia. The German Nazis rounded up the students, murdered nine student leaders and sent over 1,200 students to concentration camps (mainly Sachsenhausen concentration camp). Subsequently, they closed all Czech universities and colleges. By this time Czechoslovakia no longer existed, as it was divided by the Nazi Germany into Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and Slovak Republic with a puppet fascist government.[1]

Syracuse Basketball: Tyus Battle, Frank Howard Step Up Big For SU (itlh.com; Adler)

The Syracuse basketball squad needed huge efforts from two of its veterans to fend off a solid Iona outfit on Tuesday night.

In my preview earlier this week of the ‘Cuse-Iona clash, I intimated that head coach Jim Boeheim’screw could not act complacent against an experienced Iona team that made the Big Dance this past March.

Thank gosh that the Orange heeded my advice (okay, not really, but you get my drift).

On Tuesday evening inside the Carrier Dome, SU nabbed career-high scoring performances from sophomore wing Tyus Battle and junior point guard Frank Howard to emerge victorious over the Gaels, 71-62, with more than 19,000 fans in attendance.

I had a feeling that Iona (0-2) would prove no cake-walk, and it’s encouraging to see that, despite a tight outcome, Syracuse (2-0) showed some grit, and got the job done.

Syracuse basketball sees uptick in defense in win over Iona - The Juice Online (the juice; McGlynn)

Numbers never lie.

Last year’s defensive stats for Syracuse was ugly and pointed to a reason why the team struggled.

The Orange allowed 71.7 points per game in the 2016-17 season, the most since the 2008-09 campaign. Opponents connected on 43 percent of their shots, the worst mark since the 1992-93 team.

It was one of the worst defensive teams that coach Jim Boeheim has led in recent memory. That’s not exactly a good sign for a school that is known for the defense it runs.

But that memory may be a thing of the past.

Syracuse stymied Iona on Tuesday evening in a 71-62 win, holding the Gaels to 36.7 percent from the field.

ACC Roundup - New Stars Emerging All Over The Place (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

Three things jumped out at us about the Miami-FAMU score: DJ Vasiljevic shot 6-10 and 3-6 from three point range...and hotshot freshman Lonnie Walker came off the bench for just 10 minutes and five points. Reason: twisted ankle.

And #3? Miami shot 45% from the line.

Jim Larranaga was not happy: “I told the team after that I was extremely disappointed in our effort. We were sluggish. We didn’t take care of the ball. And our free-throw shooting was atrocious. We need to play much harder and much better.”

You expect Notre Dame to get good work out of Bonzie Colson, Matt Farrell and Rex Pflueger, but so far it looks like you can add Terrence Gibbs to that list and perhaps freshman DJ Harvey.

UNC Launching $10 Million Plan to Prepare for ACC Network (sc0ut.com; Hayes)

Construction is ongoing on North Carolina’s campus that will provide new venues in which UNC fans can watch their favorite teams. Soon, even more construction will begin to benefit UNC fans who watch those teams on television.

In preparation for the debut of the ACC’s dedicated TV channel in the fall of 2019, UNC has started a $10 million project to upgrade its infrastructure and accommodate increased demands for programming.

“We’re not to the network standard yet, but we’ll be OK,” UNC athletics director Bubba Cunningham said. “We’ll make it by the fall of ’19.”

Among the steps UNC is taking is a renovation of office space at Koury Natatorium. The school has hired Chapel Hill firm CRA Associates, Inc., the company that designed the Smith Center, and is finalizing plans for a new production center. UNC officials hope to break ground on construction in the late spring or early summer and want to have everything in place a few months prior to the launch of the league’s new channel.

More aggressive offensive approach paying early dividends for Guy (dailyprogress.com; Blum)

(Blum is a Syracuse grad)

Kyle Guy has been vocal in the early part of this season — telling people that he’s expanded his offensive arsenal to include more off-the-dribble, at-the-rim scoring ability.

As a freshman, Guy took more 3-pointers (103) than 2-pointers (102). And as he shot nearly 50 percent from behind the arc, his 2-point shot wasn’t nearly as effective.

So when Guy intercepted an Austin Peay pass just two minutes into a blowout win on Monday, and dribbled alone into two converging defenders in transition, finishing a layup while getting fouled, you could understand why his celebration was boisterous.

Kansas student who refused to observe anthem kicked off basketball team (PS; AP)

A Muslim student athlete who refused to observe the national anthem for religious reasons at a basketball game at a western Kansas college has been kicked off the team.

That has ignited concerns over whether Garden City Community College violated the civil rights of 19-year-old Rasool Samir, who continued shooting balls during the anthem Nov. 1, leading to a confrontation with a fan who accused him of disrespecting the flag.

The college says Samir was dismissed for a team rules violation, because he did not leave the court with his teammates when the anthem was played.

The American Civil Liberties Union has voiced concern that Samir may have been disciplined for exercising his First Amendment rights. It's still gathering information and hasn't decided whether to sue.
