Cyber Monday takes place on the Monday after Thanksgiving, and is the largest online shopping day of the year in the United States. The term was coined by Ellen Davis of the National Retail Federation, while working with Scott Silverman and others, at Shop.org. In 2005, shortly before Thanksgiving, Shop.org put out a press release highlighting the growing amount of sales that took place on the day. Research from 2004 had shown that the day was the 12th largest online shopping day of the year. After the term made its debut, it has been used as a marketing tool by retailers, and the public has embraced the day.

Syracuse basketball vs. Maryland: 10 things to watch for (PS; Waters)
The Syracuse Orange will host the Maryland Terrapins in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge on Monday night at the Carrier Dome. Game time is 7 p.m. ESPN2 will televise the contest.
Syracuse has won its first five games of the season, but Maryland will be the first opponent from a Power 5 conference for the Orange. Maryland is 6-1 on the season with its only loss coming on Friday to St. Bonaventure by a 63-61 score.
This is the first meeting between the two schools since the 2013-14 season when Syracuse was in its first year in the ACC and Maryland was in its last year in the league before its departure to the Big Ten.

Maryland offense needs to be up for challenge against Syracuse's 2-3 zone (baltimoresun.com; Markus)
After losing badly at home to Pittsburgh in last year’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Maryland men’s basketball coach Mark Turgeon was both frustrated and defiant about what many perceived as one of his team’s offensive shortcomings.
“Please zone us. Please zone us,” Turgeon said after a 73-59 loss. “We’re going to make shots. We’re going to be great against the zone. I was thrilled when he [Pittsburgh coach Kevin Stallings] went zone. Zone us. We’re going to be good. We just weren’t good tonight.”
A year later, Turgeon won’t have to dare Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim into going zone in Monday night’s Big Ten/ACC Challenge game at the Carrier Dome. Boeheim’s Orange have suffocated opponents for decades with their 2-3 zone defense.

Tyus Battle practices with Syracuse basketball after back issue last week (PS; Ditota)
Tyus Battle participated in parts of Sunday's Syracuse basketball practice in the Melo Center as the Orange prepared to play Maryland Monday.
Battle, the 6-foot-6 sophomore guard, sustained a "lower back bruise" during last Wednesday's win over Toledo after he was upended on a play and landed on his back. The injury limited Battle to 29 minutes in that game.
An SU spokesman said Battle was able to practice "for a bit" on Saturday. On Sunday, he worked out with the Orange guards before practice officially began and then stretched and did more drills before shooting on his own during a more strenuous portion of practice.
SU coach Jim Boeheim said there would be a determination made Monday about whether Battle could play in the 7 p.m. game in the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse (5-0) faces its toughest challenge of the young season when it plays Maryland (6-1) Monday night in the Carrier Dome as part of the Big 10/ACC challenge. The Orange is coming off a 72-64 win over Toledo on Wednesday, while the Terrapins most recently beat New Mexico, 80-65, on Saturday.
Here’s what to know about UMD.
All-time series: Maryland leads, 5-3
Last time they met: Syracuse beat Maryland, 57-55, on Feb. 24, 2014. That win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Orange after it had started the year 25-0. Tyler Ennis (20 points) and C.J. Fair (17 points) led the Orange, while the Terps top scorers were Seth Allen (22 points) and Dez Sells (15 points).
The Maryland report: The first thing that jumps out about Maryland is that it has already played seven games. Like SU, the Terrapins are a young team with the three sophomores leading the team in minutes per game.
UMD is a balanced team, ranking 54th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 30th in adjusted defensive efficiency, per Kenpom.com. Maryland’s best win was a 79-65 triumph over Butler, but it also lost a game to St. Bonaventure in which it shot just 5-of-23 from deep.

Syracuse (5-0) has opened the year on a five-game win streak, but its first real test comes Monday night when it takes on Maryland (6-1) inside the Carrier Dome. The Orange enters the matchup after an eight-point win over Toledo, a game where Frank Howard stepped up when SU’s leader, Tyus Battle, left with an injury. The Terrapins downed New Mexico, 80-65, in the consolation game of the Emerald Coast Classic.

This season, the Terps have looked great (beating Butler by 14 while shooting 57 percent) and … not so great (losing to St. Bonaventure by two shooting 42 percent). It’s tough to tell which Maryland will show up on Monday night for one of the youngest teams in the nation’s first true road games, but one consistent point has been UMD’s inability to take care of the ball. Maryland ranks among the worst in the nation in turnovers, giving the ball away on a quarter of its possessions. That, plus its inexperience, allows Syracuse to nudge ahead and grab an early-season win over a strong nonconference opponent.

Maryland Heads to Syracuse for Big Ten/ACC Challenge (umterps.com)
Maryland (6-1) will play its first true road game of the season Monday when the Terps face Syracuse (5-0) at the Carrier Dome in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Game will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 7:00 pm.
STORYLINES
• This will be the eighth all-time meeting between the two schools, and the third trip for Maryland to the Carrier Dome. The Terps lead the all-time series 5-3, while Syracuse has won the past three meetings.
• This will be Maryland’s third game in four days, after going 1-1 at the Emerald Coast Classic Nov. 24-25. After dropping their first game of the season to St. Bonaventure Friday, the Terps bounced back with an 80-65 win over New Mexico on Saturday.
• The game will serve as a pseudo-homecoming for Clifton Park, N.Y. native Kevin Huerter, with a large contingent of family and friends expected to make the trip to watch the sophomore guard. Huerter is second on the team in scoring (10.7), while leading the Terps in assists per game (4.1).

Joel McHale of 'Community' to perform at Funny Bone this week (PS; Tulloch)
Joel McHale, best known for starring in the hit comedy series "Community," will perform stand-up at the Syracuse Funny Bone this week.
McHale will perform on Thursday, Nov. 30 and Friday, Dec. 1 at the Destiny USA comedy club. Tickets are on sale now for $30 or $45. Comedian J.F. Harris will open each show.
The show is for those 21 and older.
McHale played Jeff Winger on "Community," which ended its sixth season in 2015 on Yahoo after five seasons on NBC. McHale also wrapped the 12th season of E!'s "The Soup" that year, in which he satirized current events.
In 2014, McHale hosted the annual White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in Washington D.C.
Earlier this year, he starred in "The Great Indoors" on CBS and last year on Fox's revival of "The X-Files." He will next be seen playing former "Community" co-star Chevy Chase, in Netflix's "A Futile and Stupid Gesture" opposite Will Forte.
