The 1980s saw not only increased usage of computers, especially in business and government, and the internet was in its early stages. While hacking and viruses have virtually been around since the early days of modern computing, evolving and increasingly sophisticated technologies began to see more applications, and therefore more security risks due to the simple fact that more data was at risk as computers found their way into banks, government offices, and businesses. More important data stored on computers and servers meant more valuable information for hackers, and this meant higher profile cases of security breaches. As such, online security became an important concern by the end of the decade, and so Computer Security Day was created to raise awareness about computer security. SU News Looking at the Big Picture for the Rest of Syracuse’s Non-Conference Schedule – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Grossman) Through six games, the Orange are sitting as pretty as possible with a 6-0 record, but the biggest test of the non-conference schedule looms with a matchup against number two Kansas on Saturday. Even with that daunting task ahead of them, Syracuse fans should be feeling pretty good about how the non-conference schedule could go. After playing Kansas in the Miami Invitational, it is very possible that the Orange will be favored in each of their remaining non-conference games. After Saturday, only two of the Orange’s remaining non-conference games is outside the friendly confines of the Carrier Dome, a December 5 matchup with the UConn Huskies and a trip down to Washington D.C. to play Georgetown. This year’s start will feel particularly comforting to Syracuse fans given the way that the past two seasons went sideways during non-conference play. If the Orange can get a split of their next two games, they will be 7-1 and very well may be favored in each of their remaining games before ACC play gets under way. They will return to the Dome for a game against Colgate before playing Georgetown. The non-conference schedule concludes with home games against Buffalo, St. Bonaventure and Eastern Michigan. ... ITLH breaks this duel down. I’ll try to put my fervent passion aside and remain objective in making this next statement. You have to feel at least a little excitement for how the SU hoops team has fared so far in the 2017-18 campaign. Sure, wins over respectable mid-majors like Iona, Oakland, Texas Southern and Toledo are nice. But what the ‘Cuse lacked a year ago, and what it desperately needs this go-round to enhance its chance at making the Big Dance, is some marquee conquests in the non-conference slate. Head coach Jim Boeheim and his boys got one this past Monday night, displaying heart and true grittiness in squeezing out a 72-70 victory against Maryland inside the Carrier Dome. ... The Syracuse Orange is one of them. Syracuse improved to 6-0 on the season with its 72-70 win over Maryland on Monday at the Carrier Dome. The Orange is one of six teams from the ACC with a record that is still unblemished by a loss. The others are Duke, Notre Dame, Miami, Florida State and Virginia. Some of the remaining unbeatens are ones you might expect. Kansas, Villanova and Duke. Others might surprise you: San Diego, Nevada and Valparaiso. So how long will the winning last? Here is a look at each team with an undefeated record and when each of those teams will lose their first game. ... The Bulls had three players score over 20 points as UB shot 58% from the floor to improve to 4-2 on the season. The Bulls opened the night on a 17-6 run over the first six minutes of the game, and early on there was no doubt that UB was in for a special offensive evening. With Buffalo leading 31-23 with 5:52 remaining, UB went on a 12-0 run, capped off by a steal and fast-break layup from Dontay Caruthers to give UB a 43-23 lead with 3:09 left. The Purple Eagles ended the half on an 11-3 lead as the Bulls took a 46-34 lead into the break. UB held Niagara's dynamic duo of Khalil Dukes and Matt Scott to just 17 combined points at the half. ... It’s not like we’re super smart or anything; everyone knew it was coming. But holy cow did the Heels turn it up for Michigan. Carolina ended up shooting 54.8% overall but the start of the game was way hotter than that. It was a tremendous answer to the Portland Disaster. The ACC has basically obliterated the Big Ten in this year’s Challenge, currently leading 11-2 with Notre Dame and Michigan State on deck next. The league got there with Wednesday night wins by Duke over Indiana 91-81, Miami over Minnesota 86-81, NC State shooting down Penn State 85-78 and Clemson winning on the road over Ohio State 79-65. Only BC lost, falling on the road to Nebraska. ... State Department of Environmental Conservation officials aren't saying. What they have released, though, is a report of a Nov. 17 incident during which Andy McCormick and Tony Rigoli, two DEC environmental conservation officers, executed a search warrant at a residence in the town of Kirkwood. Kirkwood is a little more than 15 minutes away from Whitney Point. Both communities are in Broome County. The warrant was issued at the home of Donald Reigel, 2473 State Route 11, according to an official at the Kirkwood Town Court. "Two days earlier the officers had received information "indicating the subject was currently in possession of an alligator," the DEC said. ...
