Welcome to National Christmas Tree Day!

The tradition of the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse began with President Calvin Coolidge over 90 years ago. A 48 foot Balsam Fir from Vermont decorated with 2,500 electric bulbs in red, white, and green served as the first National Christmas Tree which was lit by President Coolidge on Christmas Eve 1923. Today the tradition continues and is one of the most beloved holiday events in Washington DC.

Former Colgate star Bob Duffy remembers Raiders' last win over Syracuse 56 years ago (PS; Waters)

A 50-plus-year exercise in futility will continue on Saturday when the Colgate men's basketball team travels from Hamilton, N.Y., to Syracuse to face the Orange at the Carrier Dome.

It's been 56 years since Colgate beat Syracuse on the basketball court.

The two Upstate New York schools were once hardwood rivals but now the series is just a hammer-versus-nail relationship.

Syracuse writes the check and gets a W. Colgate takes the money and its lumps.

The Orange's current 51-game winning streak over Colgate is the second-longest for one school against another in NCAA history. A Syracuse win on Saturday will tie UCLA's 52-game win streak against California from 1961 to 1985.

Syracuse Basketball Stymies UConn Comeback, Looks Ahead To Colgate (itlh.com; Adler)

The Syracuse basketball squad gutted out a neutral-court conquest of Connecticut on Tuesday night. Now the Orange prepares to host Colgate this Saturday.
I have one word, and one word only, to describe SU’s duel with former Big East foe Connecticut on Tuesday evening at Madison Square Garden.

Ugly.

Positively, unequivocally ugly.

However, despite that depiction, the ‘Cuse hoops outfit emerged triumphant.

For the moment, this is all that matters.

Still, the Orange’s 72-63 outlasting of the Huskies showcased relatively poor shooting, a ton of turnovers, an abundance of fouls, another missed dunk by a Syracuse guy, and UConn’s head coach taking an unnecessary cheap shot at his opponent’s freshmen stars of the game.

If SU hadn’t made so many silly mistakes, this affair would have amounted to a blow-out. Plain and simple.

Syracuse men’s basketball opponent preview: What to know about Colgate (DO; Gutierrez)

After downing Connecticut on Tuesday night, Syracuse (7-1) returns home to the Carrier Dome to host Colgate (3-5). The Raiders are coming off a two-point loss at Marist on Wednesday night and opened their season at Connecticut and lost, 70-58. The Orange beat the Huskies, 72-63, Tuesday night in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden. Syracuse’s only loss thus far came against No. 2 Kansas last Saturday.

On Saturday at 2 p.m., the Orange and Raiders tip off for the 170th time. Here’s what you need to know about Colgate.

All-time series: Syracuse leads, 124-45

Last time they played: On opening night last season, Syracuse beat the Raiders, 83-55. Tyler Roberson scored 18 points, Andrew White 17 and Frank Howard 11. Tyus Battle scored six points and Paschal Chukwu added four in the blowout win in front of 23,844 at the Carrier Dome.

The Colgate report: The Raiders rank outside the top 100 in every major statistical category save for 3-point field goals per game and 3-point percentage. Colgate hits 11.3 3s per game, good for 10th in the country. The Raiders have connected on 39.6 percent of their attempts from deep, putting them at 49th in the country.

College basketball: Previewing ACC men's basketball conference play (ncaa.com)

It's a good time to be a men's basketball team in the ACC. In the latest AP Top 25 Poll, five of the top 15 teams are from the conference: No. 1 Duke, No. 9 Notre Dame, No. 10 Miami, No. 11 North Carolina and No. 15 Virginia. That doesn't include undefeated Florida State (7-1) or Clemson, Syracuse and Virginia Tech, which are each 7-1 this season.

The ACC is coming off of the most decisive victory in the 19-year history of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, to the tune of an 11-3 win in the series. As of Tuesday, Dec. 5, every team in the conference has a winning record, so as non-conference play comes to a close, here's a preview of ACC conference play.

The favorite
As the unanimous No. 1 team in the country with wins over Michigan State, Texas, Florida and Indiana, it's only fair to label Duke the favorite to win the ACC. The Blue Devils have a pair of players who could wind up on every All-American list next spring.

Duke men's basketball hits the road for early ACC opener at Boston College (dukechronicle.com; Donohue)

The Blue Devils finally put together a complete performance Tuesday night, putting up record-setting numbers in a 54-point blowout win against St. Francis.

That came on the heels of another strong showing last Saturday against South Dakota, perhaps suggesting that Duke has finally turned the corner after a string of slow starts and late comebacks.

But those two games were against overmatched nonconference opponents, and now the top-ranked Blue Devils must turn their attention to the start of ACC play as they head north to take on Boston College at noon Saturday. The game at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass., will be Duke's last before a 10-day break for final exams.

Who is best suited to run the point for Virginia Basketball? - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Mettien)

The question, really for the past few seasons, was who would take over at point guard for Virginia once four-year starter London Perrantes exhausted his eligibility? Even into the offseason, when it was pretty clear Ty Jerome was the heir apparent, there was plenty of consternation about depth at the position.

Well, it turns out the Cavaliers have plenty of players who can handle the point. But nine games into the season with ACC play approaching, the question now is who is UVA’s best point guard.

Jerome has been adequate, but perhaps not quite as good as many Cavaliers loyalists hoped as he’s struggled a bit with his shooting. But Jerome is one of five Wahoos averaging between 1.9 and 2.7 assists per game. Kyle Guy, Devon Hall and Nigel Johnson have all spent plenty of time handling the ball with freshman Marco Anthony also getting scattered minutes at the point.

In recent seasons, Perrantes was clearly the one, even with future NBA wing-turned-point guard Malcolm Brogdon sometimes bringing the ball up the court. But perhaps this is roster better served with a point guard by committee.

Doug Marrone receives 350 pounds of bologna, will donate most of it (newyorkupstate.com; AP)

Doug Marrone's love of bologna will end up feeding about 300 people.

The Jacksonville Jaguars coach donated 350 pounds of beef bologna Wednesday to an organization that distributes food to local charities. It was actually more like 330 pounds after Marrone keep some for himself.

Still, Marrone's odd obsession with the lunch meat has become an interesting -- and now benevolent -- story line for the Jaguars (8-4).

"I've probably eaten more bologna than anybody else in the world," Marrone said. Anybody "who's my age."

The former Buffalo Bills and Syracuse football coach disclosed his fondness for bologna following an overtime victory against the Los Angeles Chargers last month. Marrone, 53, said bologna and cheese sandwiches are his go-to meal after games.
