Welcome to World Braille Day!

World Braille Day is annually celebrated on January 4, the birthday of Braille inventor, Louis Braille. The day recognizes the contributions of Louis Braille in helping blind and visually impaired people to read and write.

Blinded in both eyes as a result of an early childhood accident, Braille mastered his disability while still a boy. He excelled in his education and received scholarship to France's Royal Institute for Blind Youth. While still a student there, he began developing a system of tactile code that could allow blind people to read and write quickly and efficiently. Inspired by the military cryptography of Charles Barbier, Braille constructed a new method built specifically for the needs of the blind. He presented his work to his peers for the first time in 1824.

In adulthood, Braille served as a professor at the Institute and had an avocation as a musician, but he largely spent the remainder of his life refining and extending his system. It went unused by most educators for many years after his death, but posterity has recognized braille as a revolutionary invention, and it has been adapted for use in languages worldwide.

Bryant Crawford scored 19 points to help Wake Forest beat Syracuse 73-67 on Wednesday night.

The Demon Deacons (8-6, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) went ahead for good on Terrence Thompson’s scooping layup with 1:56 left. Wake Forest then did just enough to hang on, earning its first win in six tries against the Orange (12-3, 1-1) despite missing five final-minute free throws.

Thompson had 13 points and seven rebounds for the Demon Deacons, while Mitchell Wilbekin added 10 points to go with a career-best eight assists.

Frank Howard scored 23 points to lead Syracuse, including two free throws to tie the game at 61 with 2:27 left.

The Demon Deacons played most of the way without top scorer Keyshawn Woods, who checked out at the 11:52 mark of the first half with a knee injury after a 2-for-2 shooting start.

Wake Forest did just enough to reverse its recent late-game struggles and hang on for its first Atlantic Coast Conference win.

Doing it with the Demon Deacons' top scorer sidelined most of the night can only help their confidence, too.

Bryant Crawford scored 19 points to help Wake Forest beat Syracuse 73-67 on Wednesday night, hanging on down the stretch after late fades in losses to two ranked teams in the past two weeks.

"Our league is tough with no easy nights," Wake Forest coach Danny Manning said. "And you want to hold serve at home. We were able to do that for our first home (league) game. That's got to be our mindset from here on out."

The Demon Deacons (8-6, 1-1) played most of the way without top scorer Keyshawn Woods, who came in averaging 15.7 points but left in the first half due to a knee injury. Still, Wake Forest managed to outrebound one of the nation's best on the boards and came up with a couple of big late baskets to break a tie game in the final 2½ minutes.

Deacs Notch First-Ever Win Over Syracuse, 73-67 (wakeforestsports.com)

For the first time in program history, Wake Forest men's basketball defeated Syracuse, 73-67, in the Demon Deacon's ACC home opener Wednesday evening at the LJVM Coliseum.

The Demon Deacons (8-6, 1-1 ACC) entered Wednesday's game with an 0-5 series record against the Orange (12-3, 1-1 ACC) as they won the first ACC home opener victory in the Danny Manning era.

Bryant Crawford led the Deacs with 19 points, including a season-high 4 baskets from the 3-point line. It was his 13th double-figure game this season and 66th career double digit game.

Terrence Thompson, in his ACC home debut, had season-high 13 points and seven rebounds while Mitchell Wilbekin had a career-high eight assists to go along with 10 points.

The Demon Deacons opened Wednesday's contest 5-of-6 from the field to build up an early five-point lead. The Deacs continued to stay hot, extending that lead to eight on multiple occasions while shooting over 50 percent from the floor. However, the Orange used an 8-0 run as the Deacons went cold to tie the score, 25-all, with just over three minutes remaining in the half. Syracuse extended that run to 10-0 and took its first lead since a 3-2 advantage in the opening minutes. The run was capped at 12-0 as Wilbekin was fouled for a four-point play to break up the run. Tied up at 29 with 26.9 seconds remaining in the first half, Syracuse hit a 3-pointer with nine seconds to go to take a 32-29 lead into halftime.
