Celebrate-National-Bird-Day-January-5th.jpg

Welcome to National Bird Day!

National Bird Day was created by Born Free USA (which was the Animal Protection Institute until 2007) and The Avian Welfare Coalition, to reduce the suffering of wild and captive birds. The day is meant to raise awareness of the destructive bird trade and cruel breeding mills, and to work for the improvement of conditions for birds already in captivity.

Millions of birds are captured in the wild each year, or are produced in captivity by breeders, who along with pet stores, sell them for profit. Many birds die in captivity before even being sold. Exotic birds have inherent behavioral and physical needs, which are often not met. They are still wild animals even though they are often treated as if they are not, and the confinement of birds to cages can lead to self-destructive behaviors. Buyers must not buy on impulse, and must be ready to keep a purchased bird for a lifetime. If buyers are not prepared to properly care for birds, birds may end up ignored in their cages, or left back into the wild to fend for themselves. They also may end up in overwhelmed bird sanctuaries.

Syracuse Basketball: WF Loss Could Come Back To Haunt The ‘Cuse (itlh.com; Adler)

In a seesaw battle until the end, the Syracuse basketball squad fell to Wake Forest, spoiling a chance for the Orange to pick up a pivotal ACC road win.
Ugh.

That’s all I have to say about the SU hoops outfit’s tight loss at Wake Forest on Wednesday night.

Let’s give credit where credit is due: the Demon Deacons (8-6, 1-1), well-coached by former Kansas star Danny Manning, executed a terrific game plan and deserved this result.

WF dominated the ‘Cuse on the glass, becoming the first roster to out-rebound the Orange (12-3, 1-1) so far in the 2017-18 campaign.

The Demon Deacons, despite not having their leading scorer the entire second half, made some huge 3-pointers down the stretch, took care of the ball, and connected on enough free throws to emerge victorious.

Notre Dame Basketball: Syracuse Orange Q&A (onefootdown.com; Rick)

Well folks, after the celebrating and good-feelings induced by its 30-point shellacking of the NC State Wolfpack on Wednesday night, it’s time to look ahead to the next game for the 12-3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish — a Saturday tilt at the Carrier Dome against the 12-3 Syracuse Orange.

Syracuse is 1-1 in conference play, having defeated Virginia Tech in its conference opener before losing at Wake Forest on Wednesday night.

The Fighting Irish, meanwhile, are 2-0 in the ACC so far with home victories over Georgia Tech and NC State, but have also lost their two best players in BONZIE COLSON (out 8 weeks with a foot fracture) and Matt Farrell (out indefinitely with an injured ankle).

No. 12 North Carolina at No. 8 Virginia ACC's top matchup (pilotonline.com; AP)

A look at the upcoming week around the Atlantic Coast Conference:

GAME OF THE WEEKEND: No. 12 North Carolina at No. 8 Virginia. One of two matchups of ranked teams this weekend has the defending national champion Tar Heels (12-3, 1-1) looking to bounce back from their first conference loss of the season, a 81-80 defeat at No. 24 Florida State on Wednesday night. That attempt comes at the site of perhaps their most humiliating defeat from a year ago — a 53-43 loss in Charlottesville, Virginia, that marked the lowest-scoring game in coach Roy Williams' tenure at his alma mater. The Cavaliers (13-1, 2-0) have won five in a row and, true to form under coach Tony Bennett, have held each opponent in that stretch to 60 or fewer points.

LOOKING AHEAD: No. 25 Clemson is off to a surprisingly strong start, earning its first national ranking since 2010, and the Tigers will look to keep it going next Thursday night when they look to complete a season sweep of North Carolina State. The Wolfpack have been tough to beat at home under new coach Kevin Keatts, winning nine of their first 10 home games before Sunday's visit from No. 2 Duke. Clemson won its debut as a ranked team Wednesday night by beating Boston College 74-70.

Is North Carolina's defense is hindering its offense? - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

North Carolina basketball wants to play fast. I know when I think UNC hoops, my mind immediately wonders to this team’s secondary break — how the Tar Heels desire to push the pace. This season is no different in that regard, really.

UNC once again features an offense that can be electric. The Tar Heels ranks 13th in adjusted tempo and 10th in average offensive possession length (14.7 seconds), per KenPom. That all checks out; as does an offensive rating inside the national top 25. It’s not the top-10 unit we’ve seen each of the last three seasons; however, it’s still pretty darn good.

The Heels have been solid on defense this season, too, but this team is falling off in a secondary statistic that could also hamper the team’s offense.

The Five-Finger Discount
Over the first 15 games of the season, North Carolina’s defense has forced just 74 steals — less than five per game. That’s not a great number, especially for a team that plays at a faster pace (more possessions). To be more specific: UNC ranks No. 317 in the nation in steal rate; the Tar Heels have forced a steal on just 6.6 percent of opponent possessions, according to KenPom.

Really good explanation of the changes.
You almost need to be in a top P5 conference to maximize your number of Quadrant 1 teams you play. I can't wait to see the breakdown of this as the season goes along. Will it be weighted evenly if you beat the 74th best team on the road vs beating the number one team, if both are quadrant 1.
