National-Apricot-Day-January-9.jpg

Welcome to National Apricot Day!

Apricot lovers from all over the United States observe National Apricot Day every year on January 9th.

The apricot’s velvety flesh is similar to that of their relative the peach. The texture of the golden-orange fruit is more firm and the flavor more tart than its cousin. This versatile fruit is enjoyed fresh, canned and dried.

Apricots are found the world over, but originated in northeastern China near the Russian border in ancient times and were later introduced to Europe and Armenia. The apricot found its way to North American when English colonists settled in Virginia. The fruit was brought further west by Spanish explorers and missionaries where the fruit is grown commercially today.

Syracuse basketball vs. Virginia: 10 things to watch for (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange (12-4 overall, 1-2 ACC) will face a huge road challenge on Tuesday at No. 3 Virginia. The Cavaliers are 14-1 overall and 3-0 in the ACC.

Syracuse has lost two straight games and the Orange's biggest problem has been a lackluster offense. The Orange's offense will be tested on Tuesday as the Cavaliers are regarded as the toughest defensive team in the country.

Syracuse will need junior point guard Frank Howard (pictured) to use a steady hand in leading the Orange against the Cavaliers.

Game time is 8 p.m. at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va. The game will be televised on the ACC Network (CW-14 in Syracuse).

Syracuse and Virginia, A Budding Rivalry? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)

I know what you’re thinking. Here we go again, another writer trying to force a rivalry upon the SU fan base. To that I say, fair. However, before you rule out a rivalry between the Orange and the Cavaliers, consider the kind of games that have been played between the teams.

First step to creating a rivalry: play in the postseason. No problem. Syracuse and Virginia in the 2016 Elite Eight was magical. Jim Boeheim’s 6th trip to the Final Four was perhaps the craziest of them all. We all know the story, Malachi Richardson leads the Orange to a miraculous comeback win. You don’t think Tony Bennett and company were angry after that loss? You know they thought they were the better team, and they probably were.

Here are the highlights, because you undoubtedly want to watch them: Syracuse Vs. Virginia (2016)

Fast-forward 11 months later and you’ve got another instant classic between the two teams. There wasn’t a trip to the final four on the line, but it was maybe the next best thing: Jim Boeheim’s 1,000th* win at Syracuse. Oh by the way, it was another crazy comeback. That was also around the time when people thought the Orange was a tournament team. Welp.

ACC Roundup - Can Syracuse Whack Virginia? (dukebasketballlreport.com; King)

Two interesting Tuesday night games as Syracuse visits Virginia and Boston College takes a break from the snow and frozen ocean (seriously) for a visit to relatively balmy Chapel Hill.

In this week’s poll, Virginia shot up to #3 and as always with Tony Bennett, their identity is from defense.

Syracuse got embarrassed frankly by Notre Dame. The Irish left their best two players at home with injuries and won the game on a wonderful hustle play by Rex Pflueger.

Now they get a trip to Charlottesville to play in the molasses. We can’t see this Syracuse team pulling that off.

Syracuse struggling as Orange hit the road (wtop.com; AP)

Syracuse’s Frank Howard was blunt in his assessment of the Orange’s two-game skid in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

“We’ve got to make a decision as a team,” the junior guard said. “We got comfortable and you can just see that in our play. We’re not going after the ball. We don’t have that chip on our shoulder. We’re going to lose if we play like that.”

Syracuse (12-4, 1-2 ACC) played that way on Saturday against Notre Dame and lost 51-49 , the Orange’s second setback at home this season. The Irish’s winning basket, a putback by Rex Pflueger after a turnover by Tyus Battle, came with 2.6 seconds left. Battle raced back down the court and foiled a layup attempt by T.J. Gibbs at the other end, but he had no help, with Howard and freshman Marek Dolezaj trotting slowly behind the play and watching the winning basket go in.

Coach Jim Boeheim said Monday it wasn’t a lack of hustle.

“Two of our guys made a horrendous mistake. Neither guy had an explanation,” Boeheim said. “It wasn’t effort. I think he (Dolezaj) and Frank just thought, the game’s over. Obviously, it wasn’t. That’s the only explanation I can have for it. They completely lost their mind in terms of the clock.

“If they both hustled down there, it would have been no basket.”

Danzer's restaurant to open this week in Syracuse (PS; Weaver)

The sauerbraten is finally here: Danzer's German & American Gasthof is opening this week.

New owner Shelly Skripnichuk says she plans to open at 11 a.m. Tuesday. She made the announcement on Facebook on Friday in the midst of last week's frigid weather.

"Great happiness is upon us on such a nasty day," she wrote. "I was able to get the certificate of occupancy and certificate of use today!"

More than 30,000 people viewed her announcement on Facebook, she said. "So much for a soft opening," she said this afternoon, after driving to Albany to pick up her liquor license.

Danzer's will be open daily. During this first week, diners can order off the lunch menu. Later in the month, a lunch and dinner menu will be available.

Skripnichuk bought the restaurant and the recipes last summer. She renovated the kitchen, bar and dining areas, lightening the spaces and bringing in some of her own German collectibles.
