Welcome to National Fig Newton Day!

Figs originated in Asia Minor and fig rolls were created in ancient Egypt thousands of years ago. Figs were introduced to the Western Hemisphere by the Spaniards, who brought them to Hispaniola in 1520. Two men are credited with the invention of what would become the Fig Newton. John Henry Mitchell developed a machine in 1892 that put a jam filling in a hollow cookie crust. He brought the machine to the Kennedy Biscuit Works—also known as the F.A. Kennedy Steam Bakery—in Cambridgeport, a neighborhood in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The company tried out the machine and named the creation "Newton's cakes," after the nearby Boston suburb of Newton. In 1898, Kennedy Biscuit Works combined with other companies to form the National Biscuit Country, which began being known as Nabisco a few years later.

Syracuse basketball vs. Pittsburgh: 10 things to watch for (PS; Waters)

Two teams in desperate need of a win will face each other when Syracuse hosts Pittsburgh at the Carrier Dome on Tuesday night.

Syracuse (12-6 overall, 1-4 ACC) has lost its last four games. Syracuse has never lost five straight games in Jim Boeheim's 42 years as head coach.

The last time Syracuse had a losing streak of more than four games was the 1968-69 season. That year, Syracuse lost its first five games. Later in the season, Syracuse suffered through a six-game losing streak.

Pittsburgh has struggled all season. The Panthers are 8-10 overall and 0-5 in the ACC. They are the only team in the ACC without a league win. All five of Pitt's losses in the ACC have been by double-digits.

Game time is 9 p.m. at the Dome on Tuesday. The game will be televised on the Regional Sports Network (YES Network in Syracuse).

The rise of Frank Howard’s 3-point shot, which Syracuse may need more (DO; Gutirrez, Fortier)

This summer, Frank Howard started videotaping his personal workouts, and he saw something he didn’t like.

He had decided to tape the workouts after his shots hit the back of the rim too often, and his personal trainer, Musa Kamara, usually sent the videos to Howard an hour or two after the workout. Howard broke them down on his phone.

“I stay in the house a lot,” Howard said, “I go home (after the workout), sit around, watch ESPN. When I get tired of watching somebody else, I’ll watch myself.”

He zoomed the video in, slowed it down and analyzed until he diagnosed what he saw as the problem. His release looked too low, a little too flat. He traced the ball’s arc back to his arms, which were in an “L” formation. His hands were positioned too close to his face, and the ball left his hands as more of a push and less of a shot. That affected him nowhere more than behind the 3-point arc, where the junior had only hit 10.5 percent in the two season prior.

Kene Chukwuka’s path from Sweden brought him to Pittsburgh (DO; Wasilewski)

In high school, Kene Chukwuka spent about three hours a day on YouTube. He’d get home from school and watch until it was time for basketball practice.

Some days, it was Kobe Bryant highlights. Other times, it was documentaries on Michael Jordan or Dennis Rodman. During the NBA season, he would watch highlights from the previous night’s games as the time difference made it difficult for him to watch them live.

Chukwuka grew up in Sweden, a country not known for its basketball prowess. Sweden has produced three NBA players since the 1946-47 season including current Utah Jazz forward Jonas Jerebko. Now, Chukwuka is one of 12 Swedish players currently in Division I, featuring as a reserve center for Pittsburgh (8-10, 0-5 Atlantic Coast). Chukwuka will find himself in the Carrier Dome when the Panthers take on Syracuse (12-6, 1-4) on Tuesday night.

Syracuse’s three-guard lineup provides increased spacing on offense at the cost of stronger defense at the top of the zone (DO; Langer)

Howard Washington checked in midway through the first half of Syracuse’s most recent game against Florida State. Washington hadn’t played more than three minutes since the Eastern Michigan game on Dec. 27. But the Orange had tallied just five points to that point — coming off back-to-back games of shooting less than 40 percent — and was looking for a spark.

Immediately, the move paid off on the offensive end. SU’s offense had been running a lineup of guards Frank Howard and Tyus Battle flanked by Matthew Moyer, Marek Dolezaj and Paschal Chukwu. None of the frontcourt players were threats to shoot the ball from the perimeter, which clogged the lane for the Orange. But that changed as soon as Washington came in, and on the first possession he knocked down a corner 3-pointer off a drive-and-kick from Howard.

Beat writer Q&A: Craig Meyer of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette breaks down the floundering Panthers (DO; Fortier)

Syracuse (12-6, 1-4 Atlantic Coast) tips off against Pittsburgh (8-10, 0-5) on Tuesday at 9 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The Orange is riding a season-long four-game losing streak while the Panthers are winless in the ACC and haven’t played a game closer than 14 points. Adding to the already-struggling squad’s worries: They just lost one of its best players for the season in senior forward Ryan Luther. The Daily Orange spoke with the Post-Gazette’s Craig Meyer, and he was not bullish on Pitt’s odds in this game:

The Daily Orange: This team is almost entirely remade from last season. What’s different about this Pitt team than in years past? What’s its identity now?

Craig Meyer: This Pitt team is different from the ones in years past in virtually every way. The first, and most obvious, is that it’s not particularly good, which is a pretty sharp and severe break from most of this century, when Pitt was regularly a top-25 team.

Beat writers predict the outcome of Syracuse's matchup with Pittsburgh (DO; Staff)

Syracuse (12-6, 1-4 Atlantic Coast) looks to snap a four-game losing streak as it hosts Pittsburgh (8-10, 0-5) Tuesday at 9 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. SU’s star player Tyus Battle is coming off of a 37-point game against then-No. 23 Florida State and gets a chance to put up another big line against the 202nd ranked Panthers, per Kenpom.com.

Here are the picks for the game.

Matthew Gutierrez (16-2)
Turn the tide
Syracuse 70, Pittsburgh 55

The Orange should have no trouble beating Pittsburgh, the worst team in the conference. The Panthers lost by 14 to Virginia Tech, a team SU handled by 12. A Syracuse victory Tuesday night would end SU’s four-game skid and get the Orange in the direction it wants to go, as each of its next four games should be wins. Then comes February.

Opponent preview: Everything to know about Pittsburgh before the Panthers come to Syracuse on Tuesday (DO; Langer)

Syracuse (12-6, 1-4 Atlantic Coast) returns home after a two-game road trip to play Pittsburgh (8-10, 0-5) on Tuesday night in the Carrier Dome. The Orange most recently lost at Florida State in double overtime, while the Panthers just dropped a game to Georgia Tech.

Here’s what to know about the matchup.

All-time series: Syracuse leads 66-45

Last time they played: In the second of two matchups last year, Pittsburgh beat Syracuse, 80-75, at the Petersen Events Center on Feb. 11. Andrew White and John Gillon led the Orange, as each scored 20 points. The Panthers return no players who played in the last contest with SU.

SUNY ESF president abruptly ousts three department chairs in shake-up (PS; Mulder)

SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry President Quentin Wheeler has abruptly ousted three long-time department chairs one month after faculty approved a resolution criticizing him for not consulting with them.

David H. Newman, professor and chair of Forest and Natural Resources Management, said he and two other chairs were summoned to Wheeler's office Wednesday morning on 15 minutes notice and told they were immediately being stripped of their positions as part of an effort to change the "campus dynamic."

Newman said many faculty members believe Wheeler is doing a poor job. "I don't know how getting rid of us changes that," he said.

Wheeler took over as president of ESF in January 2014.

In a 2016 vote, a majority of ESF faculty said they did not have confidence in Wheeler's leadership. In another vote Dec. 12, ESF's Academic Governance body made up mostly of professors approved a resolution criticizing Wheeler for not consulting with faculty as required by SUNY bylaws on his plan to boost student enrollment and other issues.

Last Thursday, the day after the chairs were removed, the faculty union decided to ask members to vote on a resolution requesting that Wheeler's contract not be renewed. That vote will be conducted via paper ballot being mailed to union members.

I knew that ESF faculty were trying to oust the President; it seems that he retaliated. Don Leopold is a long-time friend starting from days in grad school.
