Welcome to Winnie the Pooh Day!

Winnie the Pooh Day is celebrated on the birthday of A.A. Milne, the English author who created the popular children's character, Winnie the Pooh. The name "Winnie-the-Pooh" first appeared in a story called "The Wrong Sort of Bees," on Christmas Eve in 1925, in The Evening News. The following year, Milne published a volume of stories about Pooh, simply titled Winnie-the-Pooh. He followed this in 1928 with The House at Pooh Corner.

A black bear named Winnie—short for Winnipeg, as she had come from Canada—was an inspiration for the character. Winnie had resided at the London Zoo, and Milne's son, Christopher Robin Milne, liked to visit her; he even had the opportunity to feed her honey. Christopher named his own teddy bear Winnie the Pooh, after the real-life Winnie, as well as after a swan named Pooh, that the Milne's had seen while on vacation. Christopher's bear actually had originally been named Edward, and had been purchased at Harrods in London.

Syracuse Basketball: SU can salvage their season and NCAA Tournament Aspirations by February (itlh.com; Weisleder)

Syracuse basketball must win their next three games against mediocre ACC competition if they are going to salvage their NCAA Tournament aspirations.

Over 42 illustrious years as the Orange’s bench boss, Jim Boeheim has never lost five in a row. Last night, the Orange ended their four-game losing skid with a commanding 59-45 win over Pittsburgh in the Carrier Dome.

With six losses to their name already, the Orange have been counted out by most college hoops analysts, and have rightfully so, been left out of several early March Madness bracket predictions.

However, many forget that two years ago, the Syracuse Orange made the tournament as a 10 seed, and went on two losing streaks of three or more games during ACC play.
While that famous Final Four team lost 13 games before receiving a Tournament bid, they were chosen to be a part of the field of 68 because of quality wins over Duke, Notre Dame, and Florida State.

Finding the bright spots in SU’s ugly win over Pitt – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Dickinson)

Syracuse broke its four-game losing streak with a win over Pitt Tuesday, but it wasn’t a fun one to watch. The Orange scored just 59 points, and only the Panthers’ complete disarray allowed SU to pick up a 14-point victory. It’s easy to be down on the Orange, even with a win Tuesday, but SU found bright spots out of the players which had been struggling this season.

Frank Howard was the star of the show

Howard has only been a liability in one category: turnovers. Tuesday night was a different story. Howard led the Orange with four assists and only gave the ball away once, the cleanest game he’s had since he didn’t make any turnovers against Toledo on November 22. It’s been a while, and was much-needed after averaging over five turnovers per game in the five games going into Pitt.

Howard also led the Orange in points with 18 and tallied five steals, his most since November. The point guard even pulled down seven rebounds, just one behind Paschal Chukwu for most in the game for Syracuse. Howard stepped up his game in every aspect, and it helped the Orange pull away from one of the weakest teams in the ACC when SU was stumbling.

Parker Stewart takes game to new level against Syracuse (cardiachill.com; Wilson)

The Pitt Panthers suffered a disappointing 59-45 loss to the Syracuse Orange on Tuesday night after keeping things surprisingly close for the first 30 minutes of the game. But one positive that emerged was the impressive play of freshman guard Parker Stewart, who went off for a season-high 23 points, thanks to a night of excellent three-point shooting.

Stewart’s performance was notable for a number of reasons, not the least of which was the fact that all but one of his eight field goals came from beyond the arc. And while Pitt was expected to take more three-point shots than usual against Syracuse’s zone defense, the team’s sudden reliance on Stewart, who took 35 percent of Pitt’s shots Tuesday night, came out of nowhere.

He managed to rise to the occasion, though, shooting 8-of-14 on the night, including 7-of-13 from three-point range. To put that into perspective, 93 percent of Stewart’s shots were triples, and he made 57 percent of them. He also showed off his range, dropping in one of his shots from about two steps past the midcourt logo.

Five Takeaways From Pitt’s 59-45 Loss to Syracuse (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Saunders)

In Pitt’s pregame shootaround at the Carrier Dome on Tuesday, freshman point guard Parker Stewart wasn’t necessarily making all of his shots. But he had a look in his eye that caught the notice of head coach Kevin Stallings.

“I watched him pretty closely today and I thought he had the look the look that I wish every single one of my players had every time we come into a shootaround,” Stallings said. “You could tell he was energized about playing. He was anticipating a good night.”

The anticipated good night came to fruition, as Stewart shot 7 of 13 from 3-point range, setting a new program high in 3-point field goals made for a freshman and setting his own personal best with 23 points.

NYS Fair gondola finally dead? $15 million project absent in Cuomo's budget (PS; Lohmann)

The last official word on the proposal to build a $15 million gondola at the New York State Fair came in May from Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney.

Mahoney said on a radio show that the state "might have to put it off again" due to increased estimated costs for another State Fair project: A new expo center.

At some point afterward, an announcement about the gondola project was removed from the State Fair's website. Construction for the $35 million expo center continued as planned.

Now there's a new sign the gondola may be dead: Gov. Andrew Cuomo's budget proposal released yesterday contains no mention of the project among potential new capital spending at the state fairgrounds this fiscal year.
