Welcome to Tin Can Day!

It is very fitting that the Tin Can has it's very own special day of recognition. Made of tin coated steel or aluminum, the humble tin can is perhaps one of the greatest inventions in history. It revolutionized the storage of perishable foods. Tin cans are part of virtually everyone's lives. It changed the way we store food, and allowed for safe, long term storage of so many foods.

The tin can was invented in the early 1800's. Several people claim to be the inventor and/or the holder of the first patent. The first tin cans were produced in England. Philippe Henri de Girard of France, is credited with being the first creator. French Inventor Nicholas Appertin came up with the canning concept on 1809. Peter Durand of England patented the tin can in 1810. On January 19, 1825, Ezra Daggett and Thomas Kensett received the U.S. tin can patent. The celebration of National Tin Can Day is in recognition of this event.

While the tin can was invented in the early 1800, it wasn't until 1858, nearly 50 years later, that Ezra Warner invented the can opener. Prior to that, tin cans were hacked, chopped, and chiseled open.

Comparing Syracuse basketball's NCAA tournament resume to other bubble teams (PS; Waters)

With roughly two-thirds of the regular season over, the Syracuse Orange basketball team appears to be on the NCAA tournament bubble.

Just where the Orange sits on the bubble, though, is the question.

Syracuse has an RPI of 35 and an overall record of 13-6. SU is 2-4 in the ACC.

ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi has Syracuse seeded 10th in his latest projections. According to Lunardi, Syracuse is one of the last four teams to receive a bye.

Sports Illustrated also has Syracuse in the field; however, in this bracket Syracuse is among the last four teams into the field. That means Syracuse would be sent to Dayton to play in what's known as the First Four.

Meanwhile, The Sporting News currently lists Syracuse among the first four teams left out of the field.

$36 million waterfront gated community with luxury apartments, marina proposed in Cicero (PS; Doran)

A company has proposed building 248 high-end apartments in a gated community with a marina off Lakeshore Road on Oneida Lake in the town of Cicero.

Town planners are reviewing the project proposed by Trey-Jay LLC.

The proposal includes 248 one- and two-bedroom apartments in 14 buildings with nine covered garages at 6475-6477 Lakeshore Road and Beach Road.

The gated complex - which will cost about $36 million to build - would also have a boardwalk, small park and a clubhouse with third-floor gym for residents overlooking the lake, said Brandon Jacobson, a real estate agent with Team GRG/Banyan Brokerage, which is marketing the project.
