Welcome to Snowplow Mailbox Hockey Day!

Snowplow drivers often work long hours at all times of the day to keep streets safe for drivers. They keep the roads of cities and rural areas driveable, so that business can continue as usual. Because of all their hard work, snowplow drivers get to have a little fun today; they are allowed to see how many mailboxes they can knock over with their plows, and they are given "twenty extra points for boosting one into the next township." It is unclear how many points are given to snowplow drivers for just a normal mailbox takedown. The day was created by Thomas and Ruth Roy of Wellcat Holidays.

Syracuse's pursuit of Marek Dolezaj: An unsolicited email, FaceTime, dinner in Prague (PS; Ditota)

Syracuse's pursuit of Marek Dolezaj started with an out-of-the-blue email.

It was the kind of email that college coaches and their assistants receive all the time. "Hey, there's this kid ... ''

This particular email found its way into Syracuse assistant coach Adrian Autry's inbox.

"It was from a foreign guy and he had this kid who wanted to come play in the States,'' Autry said.

Autry could have ignored the email, deleted it along with the hundreds of others that espouse the greatness of some local standout, but something about it struck him as legitimate.

When big men converge, Syracuse guards try to answer with the teardrop (DO; Gutirrez)

For Tyus Battle and Frank Howard, the decision to float the basketball up in the air comes sometime after their first dribble. From either wing or the top of the key, the natural progression is to try to beat their man. Then they make the split-second decision: take it all of the way to the hoop or loft it over the outstretched arms of help defenders.

Battle occasionally drives with the mentality not that he will reach the basket, but that he will float it up from several feet out. Howard, meanwhile, knows that despite his size (6-foot-5) for a point guard, he often has no chance against 7-footers converging on help defense. That’s when he lets the ball float off his fingertips from five to 10 feet away.

Call it a runner. Call it a floater. Call it a teardrop. In any case, it can be demoralizing. It got its name because the ball drops down from the high point of the arc, like a falling teardrop on a face. Syracuse (13-6, 2-4 Atlantic Coast) players think of it as one of the most challenging shots in the game, since it drops through the net with only the right amount of touch and pace. But not only has the floater produced a bevy of rebound opportunities for SU, it has given guards Battle and Howard another option off the dribble-drive.

Previewing an important week for Syracuse Basketball (yardbarker.com; Lacy)

The Syracuse Orange finally snapped a four game skid when they took down the Pittsburgh Panthers last Tuesday, but there is still more work to be done. The Orange are now 2-4 in the ACC and take on Boston College (3-4) and have a rematch with Pitt (0-7) this week. If the Orange win both of these games and some other ACC results go their way, they can potentially move from the basement of the ACC to the middle of the pack.

Beating BC
Boston College has been the surprise team in ACC this season, taking down Duke and Florida State and hanging tough with Virginia, Clemson and Louisville. Usually an ACC team such as Syracuse looks at BC on the schedule and feels confident, but this year things are different and the Orange will have to bring their A game against the Eagles.

The Orange defense has been a bright spot for Jim Boeheim an Co. this season holding opponents to 63.6 points per game on the year, but the achilles heel of the zone is the three point shot and Boston College has capable shooters from outside. Both Jerome Robinson (46.4%) and Jordan Chatman (45.1%) are shooting lights out from deep and Ky Bowman (33.6%) is no slouch from deep either. Orange fans will remember the names Ky Bowman and Jerome Robinson from last year when the duo combined for 55 points on 10-12 from three point range to defeat the Orange 96-81in the ACC opener. Gone from that BC team a year ago is AJ Turner, who added 16 points, but Jordan Chatman has stepped up to be a stellar replacement in Turner’s absence. When the trio of Bowman, Robinson and Turner got hot last year, the Orange could do nothing to stop them and this year if they allow Bowman, Robinson and Chatman to get hot from three point range the Orange can expect a similar fate. The Orange defense will have to contain this trio if they hope to come away victorious in this matchup.

2019 SU Basketball Recruit Shines – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)

Don’t worry Orange fans, help is on the way.

This year’s Syracuse basketball team isn’t always fun to watch, but that should change over the next couple of seasons. One of the reasons why is 6-foot-4 shooting guard Brycen Goodine. The 2019 recruit is ranked as the 29th best player at his position is his class, but looks to fit the mold of a successful guard in Boeheim’s system. But don’t just take my word for it, take a look at this video:

Brycen Goodine scored 24, including this dunk in St. Andrew’s 91-81 won over Vermont Academy. Symir Torrence with 30, Tyler Bertram with 22 (7 threes). Fun game to watch. Vermont without Simi Shittu (injury).

UNC and Nike headed for another contract but don’t expect Ohio State or Texas-type money (newsobserver.com; Giglio)

The University of North Carolina is closing in on a contract extension with Nike, athletic director Bubba Cunningham said on Monday, and it is expected to be finalized next month.

The contract extension with the Oregon sneaker giant, which has been UNC’s primary sneaker/uniform/apparel partner since 1994, will likely be another 10-year deal, Cunningham said.

While Ohio State and Texas have each recently received deals with Nike worth more than $250 million, Cunningham did not anticipate UNC’s deal to be in the same financial stratosphere.

“It will be a very good deal but not a blockbuster,” Cunningham said.

$6 million videoboard project at UNC up for BOG approval (newsobserver.com; Giglio)

There are no plans to make any major changes to the Smith Center in the near future but North Carolina’s basketball home could be getting a videoboard update soon.

On the agenda for the UNC Board of Governors meeting this week is the approval of a $6 million capital improvement project to replace the replay boards at the Smith Center.

“I’d like to get it done for less than that,” UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham said on Monday. “We need the Board of Governors’ approval to move forward with the project.”

If approved, the new boards would be installed before the 2018-19 basketball season.

Astronaut Jeanette Epps says health, family issues not why she was removed (PS; O'Toole)

Astronaut Jeanette Epps and NASA are still not saying why Epps won't go to space later this year.

But Epps, who grew up on the South Side of Syracuse, told The Washington Post in an article Monday that it's not because of a medical condition or family issue.

Epps, a Corcoran High School and Le Moyne College graduate, was set to become the first African American crew member on the International Space Station. NASA announced Thursday that Epps was removed from the flight crew set to go to space in June.

NASA did not give a reason.

Epps also told The Washington Post that her overseas training in Russia and Kazakhstan had been successful.

In the same interview, Epps pointed out that neither she and nor her family members were responsible for a MoveOn.org petition calling for her reinstatement to the mission. More than 1,100 people have signed the petition, including some family members.
