Welcome to Curmudgeons Day!

Curmudgeon’s Day commemorates the birth of renowned curmudgeon W.C. Fields, who built his career on the hardships of his (mostly fictional) past, presented through comedic grumpiness and acerbic wit.

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There’s no point in being a damn fool about it.” - W.C. Fields

The word curmudgeon itself does not always have the most positive associations, due largely to a demeanor sometimes identified as “ill-tempered.” Definitions often Include words like bad-tempered, difficult, and cantankerous.

In our work with an aging population, we have met our share of curmudgeons and discovered the caring and fun-loving person underneath. Curmudgeons are often stubborn, independent thinkers, who aren’t afraid to ruffle a few feathers in order to live life by their own terms. They may not have much regard for authority, but they do enforce their own rules and standards. This can make them difficult, but passionate; often passionately difficult.

“Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people.” - W.C. Fields

How Bourama Sidibe’s Health and Success Can Alter Syracuse’s Future – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

When Matthew Moyer went down with a left ankle sprain in the Orange’s win over Boston College, the season had SU fans shaking their heads again. The hustle, strength and size that Moyer brings to this team is one of a kind and he has used it to his advantage in ACC play. The pessimistic crowd began to groan about the lack of depth on this team, and rightfully so. With Moyer on the sidelines for the time being, SU is down to seven scholarship players. And even when it had three guys on its bench, their playing time was sparse.

But Saturday showcased one of the best performances by an SU player all season. Bourama Sidibe’s career night that featured 18 points, 16 rebounds and 3 blocks powered Syracuse in a too close for comfort win over Pitt.

The frontcourt has been off and on all season long. Paschal Chukwu has been consistent on the defensive end with a three blocks per game average, but the 7-foot-2 center only has five double-digit rebound games in 21 outings. Offensively, Chukwu has shown flashes of brilliance, but it has not been consistent enough to be comfortable with him as a fourth option. Not to mention that he is not a threat outside of seven feet.

Pretty? No. But Syracuse's misfit roster is still effective - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

With 21 games already in the books, it should be pretty apparent that the Syracuse basketball team’s roster is filled with lots of imperfect players. The roster is one of the youngest in college basketball, a 215-pound forward who is currently on the shelf is the bulkiest player, and there are a lot of offensive skills that need to be developed.

Again, a lot of offensive skills to be developed. On the offensive end of the floor, the Orange often appear comprised of some of the residents of basketball’s “Island of Misfit Toys”.

There is Frank Howard, the point guard who has committed only four turnovers in his last three games combined to get to under four turnovers per game on the season, but has also transformed himself from a player with a frequently broken jump shot into the team’s best three-point shooter.

State of the ACC: Let's all welcome our new overlords from Virginia :: WRALSportsFan.com (wrapsportsfan.com; Brownlow)

It's not a lock by any stretch – not in this ACC, certainly – but Virginia going to Cameron Indoor Stadium and coming away with a win to get to 9-0 in league play AND a head-to-head edge on Duke does seem to put the Cavaliers in the driver's seat to win the ACC's regular season and lock up the top seed in the ACC Tournament.

Statistician Ken Pomeroy projected the Cavaliers will finish with a 16-2 league record and the next-best projected record is Duke's 13-5. Louisville, currently sitting at second in the ACC, is projected to finish 11-7. The Cardinals are 6-2 in the league and are plenty talented.

Tim Benz: Does a potential ACC win exist for Pitt basketball? (triblive.com;Benz)

Pitt men's basketball has gone through the first half of its conference season without a win. It's 0-9. That's the worst conference start in school history .

Nine games remain.

So, on one hand, Panthers fans can say, “Well, at least there is half a season left to get that elusive conference victory.”

On the other hand, Panthers fans must also be thinking, “My God! There's still half a season left? I can't handle that.”

In the big picture, there's not much difference between Pitt going 1-17 and 0-18. But a winless conference season is an ignominious stigma that's hard to shake.

Just ask Boston College. BC had to live through that in 2015-16 when it went 0-18.

The Eagles (3-5 in the ACC) come to Petersen Events Center on Feb. 13. Wake Forest (1-7 in conference) arrives on Feb. 21.

Pitt closes the 2017-18 slog at Notre Dame against a banged-up Fighting Irish team that is 3-5 in the ACC and could be without star player Bonzie Colson. He hasn't played since Dec. 30. Senior guard Matt Farrell has been in and out of the lineup because of injuries as well.

Climb the ever-changing walls at Central Rock Gym, now open in Syracuse (DO; Bolan)

In an unassuming brick building that was once a powdered milk factory, Central Rock Gym recently opened its Syracuse location. The exterior betrays the interior, where 45-foot rock walls stretch up, and patrons lift weights in a brand new fitness facility. On a Saturday afternoon, the gym was alive with climbers on almost every wall.

Manager of Climbing Nate Farrington walked around the gym in a pair of ice climbing boots, stopping to chat with different climbers. A Central Rock employee was giving a tour to his family but paused to introduce them to Farrington.

“Thanks for coming,” Farrington said as he shook hands with each family member. The sense of community at the gym is palpable, with small groups of climbers watching friends and strangers alike scale the huge walls.

The gym, located at 600 N. Franklin St., gives Syracuse area residents a nontraditional way to break a sweat during a time of year that makes outdoor exercise especially unappealing. Climbers can meet workout partners and experience new challenges every time they come in for a climb.

I love the curmudgeon quote. It reminds me of someone we know.
