Welcome to National Croissant Day!

In the United States, National Croissant Day is observed each year on January 30th. Croissants are a buttery, crescent-shaped rolls that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

The key to a perfect croissant is laminating the dough. Laminating the dough is a process by which butter is folded into the mixture creating multiple thin layers of butter and dough. The result is a mouth-watering flaky crust and airy body.

Legend surrounds this pastry, as is often the case with a popular, worldly treat. What is known, is that crescent-shaped breads have been found around the world for ages. One of these was the Kipferl which originated in Austria as far back as the 13th century. This nonlaminated bread is more like a roll.

Credit for the croissant we know today is given to an Austrian military officer, August Zang. In 1939 he opened a Viennese bakery in Paris introducing France to Viennese baking techniques.

5) Matt Moyer’s MSG Dunk

It’s been an up and down season for Moyer but things were certainly positive back on December 5th against UCONN. The redshirt freshmen put up a career-high 18 points in front of the bright lights of Madison Square Garden, including this ferocious put-back slam.

The play helped seal the game for SU and even got a vintage “ARE YOU SERIOUS?!” from Dickie V.

4) Tyus Battle’s Clutch Three vs Maryland

Battle has been responsible for a lot of key plays, both good and bad, this season. I guess that just comes with the territory when you have one of the highest usage rates (28%) in the entire ACC. His first clutch play of the season, though, comes in at number 4 on the list. Trailing Maryland by one with just less than one minute left in regulation, SU desperately needed a bucket. So the Orange went to Battle and he delivered.

Georgia Tech-Syracuse Game Sells Out (ramblinwreck.com)

Georgia Tech’s Atlantic Coast Conference game Wednesday night against Syracuse has sold out, the fourth game to sell out for the Yellow Jackets this season, matching the most ever for one season in the five-plus-season history of McCamish Pavilion. Tech’s game against the Orange is set for an 8 p.m. tipoff.

The sellout means the Yellow Jackets will play before full houses in four consecutive games – Jan. 18 vs. No. 2 Virginia, Jan. 28 vs. No. 18 Clemson, Wednesday night vs. Syracuse and Feb. 11 vs. No. 4 Duke – the first time that has happened since all 13 games of the 2007-08 season sold out at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. The most sellouts in a season for Tech since McCamish Pavilion opened is four in 2011-12, the Yellow Jackets’ first season in the building.

“We’re extremely grateful for the support our fans and our students have given us during these first two years of our rebuild effort,” said Tech coach Josh Pastner. “Their energy gives our team a huge lift and is a necessary part of the program we want to create at Georgia Tech.”

Single-game tickets are still available for the rest of Tech’s remaining home games, with fewer than 200 tickets still available for the Feb. 17 game against Virginia Tech.

Technical Tidbits 1/29: Basketball Takes Another Loss, Football Adds Tenth Coach (fromtherumbleseat.com; Gordon)

Basketball Falls In Close One To Clemson 72-70

Despite Josh Okogie’s best efforts the Yellow Jackets dropped their fourth straight, this one to the #18 Clemson Tigers. It was a frustrating game that saw Tech’s offense stall for the entire middle of the game and the Tigers hit a bunch of deep threes. Josh Okogie led a late comeback that tied the game at 70 with 40 seconds left, but Clemson hit a clutch layup and Tech was unable to respond. Now they look forward to a home tilt against the intimidating Syracuse zone on Wednesday.

Georgia Tech Welcomes Jerome Riase As Final Coach

On Friday Tech officially announced the hire of their 10th and final coach, defensive line coach Jerome Riase. Riase comes from Wofford where defensive coordinator Nate Woody coached prior to his stint at Appalachian State (although it doesn’t seem that they ever actually coached together). In four seasons at Wofford he coached 8 linemen to All-Conference honors which is especially impressive considering they run a 3-4. Riase also has some recruiting connections in Ohio and DC. Could we see the return of #themigration? One can only hope.

Evan Cole, Moses Wright, and Sylvester Ogbonda Preparing For Next Year

So far at Georgia Tech Josh Pastner has showed a major preference towards a short bench. Currently he has Tech playing with a 7 man rotation. With Shembari Phillips sitting out for a year due to transfer rules and Justin Moore not dressing, that leaves Evan Cole, Moses Wright, and Sylvester Ogbonda on the bench. Pastner has changed their practice schedules to be more similar to that of a redshirt player, focusing on personal development rather than game preparation. Evan Cole and Moses Wright were both considered late risers who might need some time to adjust to ACC basketball, so this is not much surprise. Hopefully this change will put them in position to be major contributors next season.

Halfway Through, a Look at the ACC Standings (virginiatech.sportswar.com; Stewart)

A look at the ACC standings for men’s basketball this morning, with the league approaching the halfway point of the conference schedule (nine of 18 games) shows that the Virginia Tech Hokies are in a six-team group with four conference losses.

Virginia hosts Louisville this Wednesday night, giving the Cavaliers a chance to separate from the rest of the conference by three games in the loss column. But that’s a sidenote to Virginia Tech fans, who are more focused on the huge logjam of teams (11) with three, four, or five losses.

Why UNC, despite NC State loss and 5-4 ACC record, is projected as lock for NCAA tournament (newsobserver.com; Giglio)

North Carolina has a stronger NCAA tournament resume than its ACC record might indicate.

The Tar Heels are tied with N.C. State in the ACC standings at the halfway mark in conference play but the Heels (16-6, 5-4 ACC) are considered a lock for the NCAA tournament – and a good seed – while N.C. State (15-7, 5-4) is a bubble team.

Why?

The best part of UNC’s resume is its strength of schedule (SoS) and the Heels have a chance to give that another boost on Tuesday with a road game at Clemson (17-4, 6-3), ranked No. 5 in the RPI.

Schumer: CNY needs to present united front on what will come of I-81 (PS; Lohmann)

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said any federal spending for an alternative for Interstate 81 in Syracuse will come only after people here locally come to a consensus on the highway's fate.

He said it's not up to him to decide on the much-anticipated project that could shape the future of transportation in the city. He also declined to comment whether he thought it was if it was feasible to pay for a tunnel to replace the aging highway at a cost of up to $4.3 billion.

"I'm willing to do whatever the local community decides," Schumer told Syracuse.com after a news conference on looming federal cuts to community health centers.

The U.S. Senate minority leader's comments echoed those he made more than a year ago just after President Donald J. Trump's election. He said then he would not fight the president on an infrastructure bill, and he said Central New York's best bet on getting the federal funding it needs depends on arriving at a consensus.

the place only holds 8600, had 7700 for ND and 5500 for Miami and 6500 for Tenn, so that tells you there will be a bunch of SU fans there as it seems 5000+ must be about the season ticket base.
