Welcome to National Bagel Day!

National Bagel Day is devoted to bagels, and bakeries and stores often offer discounted or free bagels on the day. It is unknown exactly how bagels got their start. One story says they were invented in Krakow, Poland, where they appeared in the city's community regulations in 1610. This account says they were given as gifts to women in childbirth. Another story says a Viennese baker created bagels to commemorate the victory of Polish King Jan III Sobieski over the Turks in 1683. This account says the bread was formed into the shape of a "buegel"—or stirrup—because the liberated Austrians had clung to the king's stirrups as he had ridden past.

Bagels became a part of the Polish diet, and then part of the Slavic diet in general. By the mid-nineteenth century, they could be found in London, and they were first mentioned in English print, in 1892, as "beuglich." They likely found their way to the United States via Jewish immigrants from Poland, and were eaten by them especially during Sunday breakfasts. They were first mentioned in American print as "bagels" in 1916. The production and sale of bagels became significant in New York City.

Bubble watch: How Syracuse basketball played 1 game and got 2 Quadrant 1 wins (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange began the week with no Quadrant 1 wins. That is, wins that would have made it into the highest ranking of the NCAA Selection Committee's new criteria for evaluating wins and losses.

As a reminder, the new Quadrant system attempts to balance a team's home wins versus wins away from home by placing greater value on winning away from home.

Here is a breakdown of the Quadrant system:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30; Neutral 1-50; Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75; Neutral 51-100; Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160; Neutral 101-200; Away 136-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-plus; Neutral 201-plus; Away 240-plus So as this week began, Syracuse lacked any Quadrant 1 wins. But even though the Orange played just one game this week, it now has a pair of Quadrant 1 wins. Syracuse picked up one Quadrant 1 win with its 78-73 victory at Louisville on Monday. Then Buffalo, which Syracuse beat back in December, saw its RPI rise from No. 32 to No. 28 with a road win. Presto! Buffalo became a Quadrant 1 win for Syracuse.
Here is a look at Syracuse's NCAA resume plus comparisons to other teams on either side of the NCAA tournament bubble. For our purposes, we will rely on

Schumer, McConnell clinch deal with invite to Louisville-Syracuse basketball game (PS; Weiner)

Senate leaders Mitch McConnell and Charles Schumer, who spent the past year in bitter partisan disputes, sealed their first big compromise this week with a promise to have some fun together.

Where? Syracuse, of course.

Schumer, D-N.Y., the Senate Democratic leader, invited McConnell, R-Ky., the majority leader, to join him at the Carrier Dome next year for a basketball game between the Syracuse Orange and Louisville Cardinals, a Schumer aide confirmed Thursday.

Both men are avid fans of their home state teams and have decorated their respective offices with Syracuse University and Louisville basketball memorabilia.

Nice & Naughty Chocolates: The other side of Syracuse's Speach Family Candy Shoppe (PS; Pucci)

For many years, the chocolate molds sat wrapped in cellophane high on a top shelf, to be taken down only for special orders from friends and colleagues. As soon as the work was done, the molds were returned to the shelf, out of reach from the children.

The molds, shaped like sexual body parts, sexual scenes and other adult themes, were acquired by Speach Family Candy Shoppe in the 1980s from a closing chocolate shop.

They saw little use until Michael Speach Jr. took over the chocolate shop on Syracuse's North Side from his parents in November 2007.

He launched Nice & Naughty Chocolates the following spring.
