Welcome to Lincoln's Birthday!

Lincoln's Birthday is a legal, public holiday in some U.S. states, observed on the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth on February 12, 1809, in Hodgensville, Kentucky.[1] Connecticut,[2] Illinois,[3] Indiana,[4] Ohio, Missouri, and New York observe the holiday.

In other states, Lincoln's birthday is not celebrated separately, as a stand-alone holiday. Instead Lincoln's Birthday is combined with a celebration of President George Washington's birthday (also in February) and celebrated either as Washington's Birthday or as Presidents' Day on the third Monday in February, simultaneously with the Federal holiday.

Syracuse basketball pieces together win with help of banged-up knee, converted walk-on (PS; Ditota)

It had become a running joke among his Syracuse basketball teammates.

Since Howard Washington went down with a season-ending injury before the Orange's game at Georgia Tech, Braedon Bayer has heard the phrase "stay ready" from his teammates more times than he can count.

"The phrase of the month," Bayer said Sunday afternoon, after the Orange had outlasted Wake Forest 78-70 in the Carrier Dome. "Everyone makes jokes about it -- 'Stay ready, Bro.' Even when we don't have a game, they're like 'Stay ready.' That's literally what all the coaches have been telling me from when Howard got injured."

Instant Juice: Syracuse 78, Wake Forest 70 - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

A quick take on Syracuse’s 78-70 win against Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon at the Carrier Dome:

WHAT HAPPENED: After a pair of Doral Moore free throws gave Wake Forest an early 8-7 lead with 14:57 left in the first half, a 15-5 run capped by a Tyus Battle 3-pointer put Syracuse ahead 22-13 with 5:34 in the first half. That would give the Orange a lead it would never relinquish, though things got dicey late in the game, with Bryant Crawford’s layup pulling the Deacons to within 65-63 with 4:24 to go. But Syracuse hit its free throws down the stretch, and an emphatic slam by Battle with 15 seconds to go was the exclamation point in a win that moved Syracuse back to .500 in conference play.

ANALYSIS: Syracuse played well on offense for the second straight game, with the Orange shooting 45 percent from the field and 6-12 from downtown. Though Oshae Brissett and Frank Howard combined for 6-23 shooting, each made up for it in his own way. Brissett was 8-10 from the free throw line to go with 10 rebounds, while Howard dished out nine assists and turned the ball over just once. Syracuse had been dominated on the glass by Wake Forest in the previous meeting, but the Orange actually held a +1 advantage on the boards today, much in part to Brissett and Paschal Chukwu, who each went into double digits in rebounding.

Three Takeaways from Syracuse’s 78-70 Win Over Wake – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Leonard)

Syracuse pulled out a big victory at home against Wake Forest on Sunday (and a strong backdoor cover) by the final score of 78-70. With the win, the bubble boys live to fight another day. So, let’s breakdown the three biggest takeaways from this much-needed victory.

Tyus Battle Can Do No Wrong

Battle has been phenomenal all season for Syracuse. But, Sunday was perhaps the best game of his young career. The sophomore stud didn’t quite reach his career-high (37 pts against Florida State). However, his 34 points all came in regulation, unlike the FSU game which went to double overtime. If Battle finishes the season with a couple more alpha-male performances like Sunday he will at the very least get some votes for All-ACC first team. If I had to guess, I’d say the first-team backcourt spots will go to two or three of the following six players

Points Per Game FG% 3P%
Joel Berry (UNC) 17.4 .392 .352
Jerome Robinson (BC) 20.4 .506 .466
Ty Jerome (UVA) 9.9 .427 .389
Tyus Battle (SU) 19.7 .423 .321
Kyle Guy (UVA) 15.3 .407 .390
Bryant Crawford (WF) 16.4 .394 .364

I’d be surprised if Joel Berry didn’t get one of those spots. The UNC point-guard’s numbers aren’t eye popping and he actually probably played better in his junior season but his name recognition still has a lot of pull. It’s also hard to imagine Virginia doesn’t end up with a single player in the All-ACC first team after the unprecedented season its having. Regardless, Battle is in the conversation and has a decent chance of becoming just the third Syracuse player to ever receive first team All-ACC honors (C.J. Fair in 2014 and Rakeem Christmas in 2015).

Going The Distance (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

The media herd already had concluded that Virginia, which won its first dozen ACC games, would win six more and finish undefeated in league play.

In-state rival Virginia Tech made sure that didn’t happen, even if it took surviving a blown late lead in regulation and a two-basket deficit late in overtime to beat the Cavaliers on their home court.

The Hokies’ victory over the Cavs at JPJ Arena in Charlottesville means that 19 seasons have now passed since a team cruised through the ACC without a loss. The 1999 Duke squad coached by Mike Krzyzewski was 16-0, most wins ever en route to a perfect league record.

Three coaches -- Frank McGuire, Norman Sloan, and Dean Smith -- each had two undefeated teams in ACC play. McGuire had one at UNC and another at USC. Sloan posted both at NC State, and Smith had two at Chapel Hill, most recently in 1987.
