Ash Wednesday is one of the most popular and important holy days in the liturgical calendar. Ash Wednesday opens Lent, a season of fasting and prayer.
Ash Wednesday takes place 46 days before Easter Sunday, and is chiefly observed by Catholics, although many other Christians observe it too.
Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the head. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us. As the priest applies the ashes to a person's forehead, he speaks the words: "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."
Alternatively, the priest may speak the words, "Repent and believe in the Gospel."

Syracuse basketball vs. NC State: 10 things to watch for (PS; Waters)
The Syracuse Orange and the North Carolina State Wolfpack will meet in a game critical to both teams' NCAA tournament hopes on Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome.
Syracuse (17-8 overall, 6-6) has won its last two games, including Sunday's 78-70 win over Wake Forest, to even its conference record at .500. North Carolina State has lost two straight to Virginia Tech and North Carolina.
Both Syracuse and N.C. State are currently on the fringe of the NCAA tournament field. This game could end up separating the two bubble teams when the NCAA Selection Committee fills out the tournament field.
The game is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. on the ACC Network (WSTQ in Syracuse).

NC State nearly suffered what would have probably been the ACC's worst conference loss of the season on Jan. 24 at Pittsburgh. Trailing by double digits for most of the second half and by nine points with 5:54 remaining, the Wolfpack closed the game with a 16-2 run to avoid a brutal defeat.
The Panthers are currently 8-18 overall and 0-13 in ACC play with just two of the 13 league losses coming by less than double digits.
How did Pitt control the game against NC State? Well, the Wolfpack struggled most of the game solving Pittsburgh's 2-3 zone. State shot 33.8 percent from the field and shot a season-high 35 3-pointers, connecting on just nine (25.7 percent).
That was the lone conference game NC State primarily faced zone, and those struggles at Pittsburgh are concerning given which team is next on the schedule – Syracuse.

Pack Heads North to Face Syracuse (gopack.com)
The NC State men's basketball team travels to Syracuse, N.Y. to face the Syracuse Orange Wednesday evening at 9 p.m. inside the Carrier Dome.
The Pack are currently towards the end of a stretch of games where it plays five out of seven games on the road. The Pack plays at Syracuse Wednesday and at Wake Forest on Saturday before closing the season with three of its last four games at home.
Wednesday's game against Syracuse will be televised on the ACC Network with Tom Werme and Dan Bonner calling the action. The game will be shown in the Raleigh area on WRDC (My Network TV). Other stations in North Carolina showing the game are: WMYT-TV (Charlotte), WMYV-MyTV (Greensboro- Winston-Salem -High Point), WITN-D2 (Greenville-New Bern-Washington), WILM-IND (Wilmington). Syracuse Basketball: Sustained Success Is A Fantastic Feat (itlh.com; Adler)
By besting Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon, the Syracuse basketball squad clinched its 49th winning season in a row. Let’s applaud that.
Like many SU faithful, I want our beloved Orange to reach the Final Four each and every year. I desire more national titles and conference championships.
I mean, who doesn’t?
After a golden period between 2009 and 2014, when the ‘Cuse hoops outfit advanced to a Final Four, an Elite Eight and two Sweet 16s, not to mention several No. 1 rankings and No. 1 seeds in the Big Dance, things have slowed down a bit of late.
A self-imposed post-season ban in 2015. A so-so stanza in 2016, followed by a miraculous run to the Final Four. A disappointing 2017 that resulted in a second-round NIT exit.
As for the current term, it’s up in the air whether Syracuse will hear its name called on Selection Sunday.
I get that some SU fans are frustrated by what’s transpired these past four years.
Personally, I think that we’re fairly spoiled and take for granted the consistency that this
powerhouse program has attained over four-plus decades.

Finding Three More Wins For Syracuse Basketball – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)
The magic number coming into this season for the Orange was nine. Nine ACC wins was thought to get Syracuse into the tournament. With SU’s latest surge against Louisville and Wake Forest, life has been re-infused into the Orange despite its recent health problems.
With six games left plus the conference tournament, Syracuse has a real shot to sneak its way into the tournament and make Joe Lunardi sweat out another Selection Sunday. Amongst the Orange’s final six contests are three top-15 teams, as well as a very good fringe top-25 Miami squad.
But that doesn’t mean the other two games are going to be cupcakes for Syracuse. It has a road matchup with Boston College, who has been excellent at the Conte Forum this season. The Eagles have beaten Duke, Florida State and Miami at home, as well as some close contests with Clemson and Virginia Tech. The other game comes this Wednesday against NC State. The Wolfpack have been tremendous under the guidance of first year head coach Kevin Keatts. NC State has marquee wins over Arizona, Duke, Clemson and UNC (almost twice). That’s four teams that will likely all be three seeds or better in the tournament. However, the Wolfpack’s dominance has not necessarily translated outside of North Carolina. In fact, NC State’s only road wins in conference play came 30 minutes down the road from Raleigh in Chapel Hill against the Tar Heels as well as a win against Pitt, a game that the Panthers blew a nine point lead with about 10 minutes left because they’re, well, Pitt.
