Welcome to Iwo Jima Day!

During the bloody Battle for Iwo Jima, U.S. Marines from the 3rd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Regiment of the 5th Division take the crest of Mount Suribachi, the island’s highest peak and most strategic position, and raise the U.S. flag. Marine photographer Louis Lowery was with them and recorded the event. American soldiers fighting for control of Suribachi’s slopes cheered the raising of the flag, and several hours later more Marines headed up to the crest with a larger flag. Joe Rosenthal, a photographer with the Associated Press, met them along the way and recorded the raising of the second flag along with a Marine still photographer and a motion-picture cameraman.

Feeling Blue: Clemson comes close, can’t get past Duke at home (thestate, com; Connolly)

Clemson basketball was without starting point guard Shelton Mitchell for Sunday’s showdown with Duke, and Tigers coach Brad Brownell said that veterans Gabe DeVoe and Marcquise Reed would need to step up in Mitchell’s absence.

Instead, the two struggled most of the afternoon as the 11th-ranked Tigers (20-6, 9-5) fell 66-57 to No. 12 Duke (22-5, 10-4) Sunday afternoon at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Reed and DeVoe, who have carried Clemson offensively for parts of the year, combined to score only 16 points on 4-for-24 shooting as the Tigers lost back-to-back games for the first time this season.

Clemson fought back from a 10-point second-half deficit to tie the game at 57 in the final minutes, but Duke ended the game on a 9-0 to secure the victory.

Syracuse Basketball: Andrew White III proved his worth in his NBA debut (itlh.com; Weisleder)

In his NBA debut Wednesday night, Syracuse basketball alum Andrew White III displayed just how fearless and league ready he is. ITLH breaks it down.

This past Wednesday, on Valentines day, Atlanta Hawks fans fell in love with Andrew White III, and for good reason. The 24-year-old scored the most points in a Hawks debut since 1990.

After patiently waiting his turn on a young Hawks bench, game after game, Atlanta’s head coach Mike Budenholzer finally came to his senses this past Wednesday. In a tough road matchup with the Detroit Pistons, White played 17 minutes, hit three of his seven three-point attempts, and finished with a team-high 15 points on 55% shooting.

Going into this game, most were expecting White to simply be a spot-up three-point option because, with most wing players in this league, that’s what you get with someone his size.

However, on top of a strong shooting performance from three-point land, White made many smart decisions that were overlooked. Whether it was making a timely cut to the basket, or creating just enough room to connect on a contested three, the 6-foot-7 Syracuse product shined in his debut. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him continue to play regularly on a young and inexperienced Hawks team.

Extra rest pays off in fifth straight ACC win for Tar Heels (newsobserver.com; Giglio)

North Carolina got an extra day off of practice this week.

If the Tar Heels play like they did on Saturday in a 93-76 win at Louisville, they might get some more time off.

After the Tar Heels (21-7, 10-5 ACC) had completed an unbeaten run through three games in five days, Williams figured that had earned a little extra rest. So after Monday’s home win over Notre Dame, there was no practice on Tuesday and no practice on Wednesday.

Joe Biden, in public and private, tiptoes toward a 2020 presidential run (PS; AP)

Former Vice President Joe Biden is tiptoeing toward a potential run in 2020, even broaching the possibility during a recent gathering of longtime foreign policy aides.

Huddled in his newly opened office steps from the U.S. Capitol, Biden began a planning meeting for his new diplomacy center by addressing the elephant in the room. He said he was keeping his 2020 options open, considering it a real possibility. He insisted he had made no decision, and didn't need to yet, according to five people who either attended the meeting or were briefed on it by those who did.

Biden also expressed interest in bringing those in the room onto his team if he decides to launch a campaign. At the same time, he gave them an out: There would be no hard feelings if they decided they were content in their current roles outside of government, said the people, who demanded anonymity to discuss a private meeting.

The political world has long tried to game out Biden's plans for 2020. After all, he came close to running last time only to see President Donald Trump pull off a victory that many Democrats openly suggest wouldn't have happened had he, not Hillary Clinton, been their nominee. Several people came away from the meeting with the impression that if no strong Democratic candidate emerges in the next year or so, Biden would feel strongly compelled to run.
