Welcome to National Chili Day!

According to Doug Koegeboehn, chief marketing officer for Wienerschnitzel, the list of “Top 10 Chili Cities” includes not only expected chili capitals in the Southwest but other markets like Los Angeles, Chicago, Cincinnati and Springfield, Mo., known more for seafood, Midwest comfort food or ethnic dishes than the American classic dish.

The survey ranked Los Angeles atop the list, followed by Dallas; Phoenix; Houston; San Francisco/Oakland; Chicago; Baton Rouge, La.; Springfield, Mo.; Cincinnati; and San Antonio who is credited with first popularizing chili in the 1890s, rounded out the top 10.

Pinson scores career-high 23, UNC holds off Syracuse 78-74 (fresnobee.com; AP)

When Syracuse threatened one final time, Joel Berry II had an answer for North Carolina.

Theo Pinson scored a career-high 23 points, Berry added 18, including the tiebreaking layup with 1:36 left, and the No. 10 Tar Heels held off the Orange 78-74 on Wednesday night.

Syracuse had trailed almost the entire game until a late eight-point run knotted the score. Tyus Battle scored six of the points, his jumper with 3:05 to go tying it at 74.

With the clock ticking down inside the final 2 minutes, Syracuse had an opportunity to go ahead for the first time since the second minute. But after towering center Paschal Chukwu snared an important rebound after two straight Orange misses, Berry stole the ball and scored at the other end and the Tar Heels escaped.

Syracuse kept coming back. North Carolina kept coming up with answers.

Senior guard Joel Berry scored the last four points of the game to help No. 10 North Carolina escape with a 78-74 win at Syracuse on Wednesday night.

It’s the sixth straight win for UNC (22-7, 11-5 ACC) since a three-game losing streak at the end of January and the Tar Heels’ sixth straight win over Syracuse (18-10, 7-8).

“It’s just funny how everybody was writing us off,” said senior wing Theo Pinson, who had a career-high 23 points.

Why Syracuse's Tyus Battle is the ACC's Iron Man - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

It’s this simple: No player in the ACC is asked to do more than Syracuse’s Tyus Battle. The sophomore guard plays 38.7 minutes per game; in ACC play, Battle is somehow averaging 40.1 minutes per game — the result of a double overtime game against Florida State.

Battle has played 95.1 percent of Syracuse’s available minutes this season — the second highest rate in the nation, per KenPom. Two of his teammates — Frank Howard (93.6 percent) and Oshae Brissett (92.9 percent) — also rank inside the top 12. This is all, of course, the result of Jim Boeheim playing a super-tight rotation that would make even his former Team USA Basketball colleague Tom Thibodeau blush.

Over the last five games, according to KenPom, Battle has played 100 percent of Syracuse’s two guard minutes.

Making every minute count
However, it’s important to remember: it’s not just the minutes Battle plays that makes him so special; it’s what he does on the floor that’s special, too. According to Synergy Sports, Battle has used 552 possessions this season — No. 1 in the ACC, and 19 more than his closest counterpart (BC’s Ky Bowman).

Syracuse basketball loses to North Carolina 78-74: Brent Axe recap (PS; Axe)

This one has to sting.

The Syracuse University basketball team put forth a monster effort to hang with the No. 10 team in the country before the largest crowd in college basketball this season on Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome but critical mistakes down the stretch led to a 78-74 win for the North Carolina Tarheels.

"These guys played their hearts out as they have all year long, and again, North Carolina is a tremendous team,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said.

North Carolina is indeed a tremendous team. The Tar Heels had an answer every single time Syracuse threatened to take back Wednesday's game and have now won six straight games.

Syracuse just missed a shot at a significant Quadrant 1 win that would stand out among the NCAA Tournament bubble crowd.

If at first you don't succeed in trying to topple an ACC giant, try, try again.

No. 5 Duke awaits on Saturday at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Summer's over: Snow, ice return to Upstate NY after 70-degree days (PS; Coin)

The summer-in-winter party is over for now in Upstate New York.

Record-breaking temperatures on Tuesday and today reached into the 70s, more typical of early June than late February. It was 75 degrees in Syracuse, making today the warmest winter day in 115 years of records.

A cold front that rushed across Upstate today, though, has brought winter back for at least a brief visit.

One to 5 inches of snow is possible in Upstate on Thursday, with the heaviest amounts in the Southern Tier. The moisture-laden storm will move up from Texas and turn right at Pennsylvania, just clipping New York state.

Winter weather advisories are in place all day Thursday along the entire Pennsylvania border, reaching as far north as Cortland County and the Capital Region.
