Welcome to Levi Strauss Day!

Levi Strauss was a German-American businessman born in Bavaria on February 26th, 1829, who came to the United States with his family the mid-1800s when he was 18 years old. Strauss began as a dry goods wholesaler in San Francisco, California, where he sold various items such as clothing, bedding, bags and handkerchiefs to settlers, many of whom had arrived in California to take part in the gold rush. Needless to say, the hard physical labor required of the miners of the day and those building new railroads made it difficult for them to find clothing that would last for more than a few months without falling apart at the seams.

One day in 1870, one of Strauss’ clients, a tailor named Jacob W. Davis was approached by a woman who needed a pair of exceptionally strong working pants for her husband, a woodcutter. Her request prompted Davis to make a pair of pants from the denim he’d bought at Strauss’ shop that he then strengthened with copper rivets to reinforce the stitching. Word of the new article of clothing and its endurance spread fast, and soon Davis was not able to keep up with the demand for his invention, nor did he have the resources to open a larger tailor shop or obtain a patent. Falling further and further behind and afraid someone else would steal his idea, Davis decided to ask for Strauss’ financial backing in the filing of a patent application. Strauss agreed, the patent was issued, the two men became business partners, and Levi Strauss & Co was born.

Syracuse’s Rebounding Has Fallen off a Cliff – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Carter)

Perhaps the most fascinating subplot of this Syracuse men’s basketball season — and there are a plethora to choose from (RIP Geno Thorpe) — has been the Orange’s relationship with the glass. SU began the year as one of the best rebounding teams in the nation, but has since seen that strength erode and rear its ugly head as a weakness multiple times.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane and try to understand how Syracuse went from dominant to dormant on the boards over the course of the 2017-18 schedule.

December 5: Jim Boeheim gushes about his team’s rebounding prowess

In another installment of a once-prestigious rivalry that now pits one perennial bubble team against a mediocre AAC program, Syracuse took care of business against UConn at Madison Square Garden in early December. The Orange grabbed 11 more boards than the Huskies did, marking the sixth time in SU’s first games in which it outrebounded its opponent by double-figures (the ‘Cuse outrebounded Maryland by six and Kansas by five).

After the win moved his team to 7-1 on the season, hea
d coach Jim Boeheim dropped a bit of praise that seems downright blasphemous in hindsight.

UNC Basketball: Weekly ACC and NCAA seeding update (tarheelblog.com; Hood)

Congratulations, everyone, we made it to the last week of the ACC Regular Season! Three weeks ago, I don’t think any of us were as optimistic about this week as we are now. Yet here we are.

On the backs of their remarkable six-game winning streak, Carolina has gone from just hoping they can get a single bye to being in a comfortable spot regarding the double bye. They have also gone from being a middling seed in the NCAA’s to a borderline two with a chance for a top seed, depending on what happens above them.

You know what, I think Roy Williams can coach.

Today, as we’ve done the last couple of weeks, we will go through the scenarios for Carolina’s ACC seeding, and also take a peek at the NCAA Tournament landscape. On Friday, we’ll hone in for the last time on the ACC seeding going into the last games on Saturday. Then on Monday, we can look at what they need to do in the ACC Tournament to make their NCAA case stronger.

Let’s dig in, shall we?

Rapper Tyler the Creator loves Wegmans: 'Whole Foods is trash compared to this' (PS; Axelson)

Tyler, the Creator is a Wegmans convert.

The California rapper called Upstate New York's favorite grocery chain "the nicest [expletive] store I've ever been to" while raving about his visit to a Rochester-area Wegmans during a show on Friday.

"They sell sushi in there. They bake bread next door ... Whole Foods is trash compared to this ..." he told a crowd of thrilled fans.

He started the minute-and-a-half-long pronouncement by taking digs at the Western New York area for not having a lot to do, but finished by saying, "y'all got the greatest grocery store I've ever seen."

You can watch a full, expletive-heavy video of the moment below.
