Welcome to Cinco de Marcho!

Cinco de Marcho marks the beginning of the season to train the liver for St. Patrick's Day, a holiday known for drinking that is just 12 days away. Cinco de Marcho is a drinking day for those who don't often drink, and want to be prepared to drink on the upcoming holiday. In 2007, the creators of the holiday, who go by the names Lady O' Le and Carlos Fantastico, heard a friend was coming to visit during St. Patrick's Day. Although not teetotalers, they rarely drank and knew they had to prepare themselves for the drinking that was to come. They started their liver training by drinking a margarita at a Mexican restaurant on March 5. They thought it was fitting that it was the 5th of the month, just like Cinco de Mayo, and that they were drinking a green drink—the color associated with St. Patrick's Day. Cinco de Marcho is not just a day, but a 12 day season leading up to St. Patrick's Day, with the closing ceremony on that holiday. Besides the opening festivities of drinking margaritas, parties can be held at any time during the season.

Bubble stress: How Syracuse basketball players handle NCAA Tournament uncertainty (PS; Waters)

For three years, Frank Howard has been part of a Syracuse basketball program that right about now is feeling the heat of postseason uncertainty.

Count Tyus Battle in for two of those same seasons.

As Syracuse prepares to face Wake Forest at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Brooklyn in the ACC Tournament, the Orange faces yet another must-win scenario to earn a spot into the NCAA Tournament field.

So how have Howard and Battle approached the preparation for these late-season games? How have they dealt with the scrutiny and the bubble watchers among them this time of year? How much noise seeps into their everyday college basketball existence?

"You gotta play in the moment," Battle said. "You can't look too far in the future. That's how I view it. And if you do enough good things in that moment, you'll get the win at the end of the game."

Hoops Q&A Preview: Clemson at Syracuse (shakinthesouthland.com)

Clemson heads to Syracuse on Saturday to play the Orange, and are looking to put a cherry on their ACC Sunday. Syracuse is just looking for a team to put them out of their season long misery, and Clemson is poised to deliver the coup de grace to a reeling Orange.

Clemson doesn’t have much to gain, and seeding to lose on Saturday. A win over a 7-10 Syracuse team doesn’t mean much, but a loss could drop the Tigers down a seed in the NCAA tournament. I generally don’t follow anything that comes out of the North East, so I asked James Szuba of Troy Nunes is An Absolute Magician what the deal is with Syracuse.

Syracuse is looking at missing the NCAA tournament in consecutive seasons. I was a Purdue fan at the end of the Keady era, and the overwhelming sentiment among the fan base was that Gene could coach as long as he wanted, but we all hoped he wouldn’t want to coach much longer. Have you guys reached that point with Boeheim yet, or is their still optimism that he can get Cuse back to the promised land?

Well, part of the fan base has been calling for Boeheim’s head for years which doesn’t quite make much rational sense. I’d say there’s a divide but with a top recruiting class coming in next year and everyone back, the program is expected to be on an upswing. Syracuse should be back in familiar territory next season.

Previewing Syracuse’s Path In The ACC Tournament – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

Well, they’ve done it again. The Orange has revived it season as it has done so often this year with yet another unlikely win. After picking up its first win against a ranked opponent, SU heads to the ACC Tournament as the 11 seed. With that, Syracuse gets its third matchup of the season against Wake Forest. The Orange and Demon Deacons split their season series with the home teams taking each game.

But once the conference tournaments come around, anything goes. Just take a look at the Big Ten Tournament where Rutgers made a run and challenged the best of the best in the conference.

Syracuse will need a Rutgers-esque run if it wants to go dancing this tournament, but the path is far from easy. Realistically, two wins at Barclays should be good enough for the Orange to go dancing.

Syracuse Athletics: SU basketball and football shocked Clemson twice (itlh.com; Weisleder)

In less than a year, Syracuse Basketball and Football defeated two top-seeded Clemson Tigers teams in unprecedented fashion.

Ahead of the 2017-18 season, nearly all Syracuse football supporters were confident that the Orange stood no chance against the reigning champion Clemson Tigers, led by distinguishable head coach Dabo Swinney.

Despite that, “Syracuse’s defense was nothing short of phenomenal for all four quarters, and for the second time in the history, the Orange took down a top-two seed in the country”. All of this happened after Dino Babers won just four games with the Orange in 2016.

The narrative of Syracuse football’s improbable win over then No. 2 ranked Clemson is nearly identical to Syracuse basketball’s improbable win over the No. 18 Tigers this past Saturday in the Carrier Dome.

Ahead of Syracuse’s two matchups with Clemson, Dino Babers and Jim Boeheim‘s coaching abilities were unfairly criticized. Babers and Boeheim have both had illustrious coaching careers and to the dismay of most college sports fans, the two were able to snag victories over two strong Clemson teams.

Syracuse Basketball: First look at Wake vs Cuse in ACC Tournment (itlh.com; Edsen Jr)

It’s official the Syracuse basketball team will play Wake Forest in the opening round of the ACC Tournament. ITLH breaks it all down.

It was a perfect storm for the Syracuse basketball team on Saturday in their ACC regular season finale. It took 31 games for the Orange to get their first top-25 conquest of the season.

Longer than expected, but when you think of the journey that the Cuse has been on, it’s actually been an impressive coaching job by Jim Boeheim and company.

SU has a couple of days to gather themselves before heading off to Brooklyn for the ACC Tournament. Speaking of everything is locked in, the Orange clinched an 11 seed with their win over Clemson and losses by Boston College and Wake Forest.

Speaking of the Demon Deacons, that’s who the Cuse will open up against on Tuesday night as the Orange search for their first ACC tournament win in program history.

Residents voice support for Interstate 81 ‘community grid’ option at Syracuse forum (DO; Rose)

Community members continued the debate over the Interstate 81 viaduct’s replacement options Sunday, calling on lawmakers to support a “community grid” plan they said would help alleviate issues of economic segregation in Syracuse.

More than 50 people gathered Sunday at the May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society on East Genesee Street to discuss the controversial multibillion-dollar project, which is currently being studied by New York state officials.

“I’m thinking about lives, human lives,” Twiggy Billue, president of the Syracuse chapter of the National Action Network, said of her support for the community grid concept.
