Welcome to National Cereal Day!

Cereal is celebrated and eaten today! Cereal, in general, may be a name for any grain, such as wheat, barley, oats, or corn. But since the end of the nineteenth century in America, cereal has usually meant breakfast cereal—now the most popular breakfast food in the country. It gained popularity at that time, as a healthier alternative to other foods. Until the 1860s, breakfast was dominated by eggs, bacon, and sausage. Reformers began preaching that eating too much meat was both physically and spiritually harmful, and cereal was looked at as a nutritious remedy of sorts.

The first American cooked cereals were corn-mush porridges that had been adapted from Native Americans. Quaker Oats, made from hulled oats, was created in 1877. Cream of Wheat appeared in 1894. The first cold cereal was invented by Dr. James Caleb Jackson, and was made of hard, bland bran nuggets that had to be soaked overnight and were hard to digest. It was called granula.

Rapid Reaction: Marek Dolezaj Steals the Show, Syracuse Survives and Advances – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Grossman)

First things first. The Orange got a huge win, beating Wake Forest 73-64. They will return to the Barclays Center floor against UNC tomorrow night. Things really could not have started better for the Orange. They opened the game on a torrid run, and seemed to bury the Demon Deacons less than ten minutes into the game. But, as they say, all good things must come to an end. After opening the game with a 20-4 lead, the Orange staggered the remaining ten minutes or so of the first half, only taking a 30-24 lead into the locker room.

Tyus Battle got hot early and, unsurprisingly served as the catalyst for most good things the Orange did on offense all night. He finished the game with 18 points on five-for-nine from the floor. The Orange were able to get all five starters into the game early but things regressed to the mean shortly thereafter, in terms of the overall offensive output.

Syracuse tops Wake Forest 73-64 for 1st ACC tourney win (AP)

Took a few tries for Syracuse to win a game in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. With that hurdle finally cleared, the Orange can now focus on bigger postseason aspirations and the critical test on tap.

Freshman forward Marek Dolezaj scored a career-high 20 points and the Orange beat Wake Forest 73-64 on Tuesday night to reach the second round.

Syracuse had plenty of New York City success in the Big East Tournament over the years but had been 0-3 in ACC postseason play since switching conferences.

"I thought our defense really was the difference," coach Jim Boeheim said. "They're a very, very good offensive team, and I thought we got them off their spot."

Syracuse basketball defeats Wake Forest 73-64: Brent Axe recap (PS; Axe)

So it all comes down to this.

The Syracuse University basketball team has played 32 games during the 2017-18 season, including a 73-64 victory over Wake Forest on Tuesday night at the ACC Tournament in Brooklyn.

The Orange has 20 wins and 12 losses. They have logged 1,295 minutes of official game play and 80 minutes of exhibition play since Nov.1 2017.

Bracketologists can't agree on much when it comes to Syracuse these days, but a consensus could be formed if the Orange can defeat North Carolina on Wednesday at the Barclays Center that they belong in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.

Beating Wake Forest alone might not be enough.

North Carolina gives the Orange insurance and assurance they will hear their name called on the CBS ... err ...TBS Selection Show on Sunday night.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim likes his team's chances to escape the bubble for the second time in four years with an NCAA Tournament bid.

"We had a great strength of schedule this year, much better than last year,'' Boeheim said. "We didn't win on the road last year. We won on the road this year.

Doomed by the start: Poor opening start leads to end of Wake Forest's basketball season (journalnow.com; O'Neill)

In need of a win to extend its season, Wake Forest was down by double digits after seven minutes, never led and recorded its second 20-loss basketball season in the last three years by falling 73-64 to Syracuse on Tuesday in the first round of the ACC Tournament at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Whether the Deacons (11-20) played with enough urgency in light of the win-or-go-home scenario, junior center Doral Moore thought only of the result.

“I would have thought so, but you saw the outcome,” he said.

The beginning of this game, played in front of 10,612 fans that were mostly wearing something orange, saw Wake Forest sputter offensively while Syracuse (20-12) made nine of its first 14 shots. The lead was 20-4 after 8½ minutes, and the Deacons seemed lost while this building was as loud as it was all day.

“They came out with more energy than us, and we just weren’t prepared and we did a poor job of rebounding,” Moore said.

Oncenter's 48-lane bowling venue unveiled with USBC tournament set to start (photos) (PS; Piriano)

The countdown to the United States Bowling Congress Open Championship at the Oncenter has begun.

The newly constructed 48-lane bowling venue at the Oncenter was officially unveiled Tuesday during a press conference. USBC officials and community dignitaries including Mayor Ben Walsh took part in the ceremony. The 115th annual tournament draws approximately 30,000 bowlers from around the country and starts March 24.

"This is impressive," said Walsh of the venue. "We're excited and proud as a city to show what we have to offer."

Major construction began last December and was completed two weeks ago. The USBC hired several local carpenters and craftsmen to assist in the transformation of the Oncenter's main exhibit halls into a state-of-the-art bowling center.

Workers put in 15,000 man hours to complete the project. Many of the supplies and equipment needed to build the venue such as plywood, paint, tiles and drywall were purchased locally.
