Welcome to National Baked Scallops Day!

This one is for you liljoe!

March 12th is a food holiday celebrating a popular delicacy, the scallop.

Scallops are a cosmopolitan family and can be found in all of the world’s oceans. They are one of the most popular shellfish in the world and highly prized as a food source.

There are two fleshy parts of the scallop that are usually sold at market for human consumption. The adductor muscle is the white medallion of meat which is rich and sweet. This is the piece that is most familiar as the “scallop” we see on a menu.

There is also the coral or the roe which can range in color from pale coral to bright orange. This crescent-shaped piece is usually discarded before the scallop is sold at market because it may contain toxins. However, sometimes it is sold attached to the adductor muscle. It is bitter and some say it cuts the richness of the rest of the scallop.

These meaty mollusks are very low in fat and are delicious prepared in a variety of ways. Baking them omits much of the butter and fat that otherwise go into cooking this lean, white seafood.

Baked scallops are often found served as a delicious entree, however, they are also known and loved as an appetizer.

Doug Gottlieb: 'Syracuse being in is just laughable' (What they're saying) (PS; Axe)

As you know by now, the Syracuse University men's basketball is going dancing in 2018.

Syracuse was the last team into the 2018 NCAA Tournament field as a No. 11 seed and will face Arizona State on Wednesday night in the 'First Four' in Dayton at 9:10 p.m.

The winner of that game will face No. 6 seed TCU on Friday in Detroit.

Syracuse's inclusion in the NCAA Tournament field over teams like Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, USC and others brought out plenty of H0T Takes on Sunday night including from one very predictable hater.

Let's take a look at some of the reaction.

Syracuse being in vs Ok State is just laughable. Getting extra credit for Buffalo/Iona wins in non-conference. Cuse didn't beat a top 3 opponent in their league- 3 best wins @miami vs VT,vs Clemson - lost to Wake,BC,GT

-- Doug Gottlieb (@GottliebShow) March 11, 2018

Doug Gottlieb does Doug Gottlieb things
Surprise! Doug Gottlieb doesn't think Syracuse belongs in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.

Syracuse's No.1 media foil tweeted Sunday night that it was 'laughable' that the Orange were included in the field.

Gottlieb also referenced that Syracuse got in over Oklahoma State, his alma mater.

Ouch. That's gotta hurt, Doug.

There were no bubble snubs this year, but Syracuse over USC, Oklahoma State is perplexing (nbcsports.com; Dauster)

The NCAA almost got it perfect.

Almost every team decision they made was totally and completely justifiable.

They left out Saint Mary’s, a 28-5 team out of the WCC that simply refuses to schedule anyone. They left out a USC team that, like Louisville, just did not have enough really good wins on their résumé to justify inclusion. They put the likes of UCLA, Oklahoma, Arizona State and St. Bonaventure into the field.

For the most part, I think the committee almost got all of the teams right.

Almost.

Except for Syracuse.

Kansas vs Arizona State Men's Basketball Highlights

Meet Arizona State, Syracuse basketball's NCAA Tournament opponent (PS; Murray)

The Syracuse basketball team will face Arizona State (20-11, 8-11 Pac-12) in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament at 9:10 p.m. on Wednesday in Dayton, Ohio.

Take a first look at the Sun Devils and what makes them go.

WHO'S ARIZONA STATE'S BEST PLAYER?
Senior guard Tra Holder leads the Sun Devils in scoring with 18.4 points per game. The 6-foot-1 guard also averaged 4.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. Holder shoots 37.1 from the 3-point line.

In terms of advanced numbers, Holder used 25.6 of Arizona State's possessions when he was on the floor and took 25.8 percent of the team's shots, according to KenPom.com.

WHO'S THEIR NEXT-BEST PLAYER?
Shannon Evans II forms the other half of Arizona State's dynamic backcourt duo. The 6-foot-1 guard averages 16.6 points per game and shoots 37.3 percent from the 3-point line.

And he takes a lot of 3-pointers. Of his 399 shot attempts this season, 244 of them were from beyond the arc.

Selection Sunday Was Good to the ACC, but Not to USC and Saint Mary’s (theringer.com;Samman)

After months of games and what felt like hours of in-studio buildup, the 2018 NCAA tournament field is finally set. Sunday’s selection show was a dragged-out affair with a new, larger set and a live studio audience that made the broadcast resemble an episode of The Price Is Right more than a typical bracket reveal.

The show opened to mild applause from the hundred-plus fans in attendance before the teams in the Big Dance were revealed in alphabetical order—something stressed repeatedly—and the matchups were unveiled. The result was a messy, boring 13-minute stretch in which the hosts named the teams one by one, only pausing to remind the audience that the order of teams was, in fact, being presented alphabetically. And just in case you forgot since you started reading this paragraph: The order was alphabetical.

Bubble Watch: How did the teams sitting on the NCAA Tournament bubble fare? (PS; Ditota)

We've been reading NCAA team sheets. We've been watching games. We've been checking scores on ESPN. We've been doing a lot of number-crunching and a lot of educated guessing.

The Bubble Watch is officially over for 2017-18. But how did all our contenders fare during Selection Sunday? Some winners, some losers.

Here's how it went:

TEXAS
The Longhorns, at 19-14, grabbed a 10 seed and will play 7th-seeded Nevada, which got an at-large bid after dominating its conference and losing in its conference tournament.

Texas was seeded No. 39 by the tournament selection committee. Texas was 8-11 in Quadrant 1 and Quadrant 2 games. Its non-conference strength of schedule was rated 95. It had no losses in Quadrant 3 and 4. Best win: Home against Texas Tech.

OKLAHOMA
The Sooners, at 18-13, are a 10 seed in the Midwest Region and the 40th overall seed as voted upon by committee members. They will play No. 7 Rhode Island in Pittsburgh.

Oklahoma had an RPI of 49. It was 9-12 in Quadrant 1 and 2 games. It's best win -- a home victory over Kansas. Its non-con SOS: 165.

2018 NCAA tournament: ACC, with nine teams in, has bragging rights for now (usatoday.com)

Conference bragging rights for the NCAA tournament — at least after the bracket reveal Sunday and before any games are played — belong once again to the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Led by No. 1 overall seed Virginia and No. 2 seeds Duke and North Carolina, the ACC placed nine teams in the tournament, matching the record it set last season.

Hot on its heels, however, is the Southeastern Conference.

The conference best known for cranking out national champions in football landed a league-record eight teams in the tournament, easily topping its record of six, accomplished nine times before (most recently in 2008).

MORE: Selection committee gave credit for November wins

The Big East got six teams in but leads the way with two No. 1s, Villanova and Xavier.

The rugged Big 12 thought the league would get nine teams in as well but wound up with seven with Baylor among the first four teams out. Oklahoma State also missed out — despite two wins vs. No. 1 seed Kansas — after losing to the Jayhawks in the Big 12 Tournament.

Dam floodgates to open to drain excess Lake Ontario water into St. Lawrence (PS; AP)

Floodgates are being opened at a New York Power Authority dam in Massena to spill excess water from Lake Ontario into the Saint Lawrence River.

The gates at Long Sault (SOO) Dam are scheduled to open at 7 a.m. Monday. The power authority says there will be rapidly changing river flows downstream.

Outflows from Lake Ontario are established weekly by the International Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River Board. The decision to open the floodgates Monday is in response to higher than normal water levels and ice conditions on Lake Ontario.

The spilling may continue through March 23.

Heavy spring rains last year filled Lake Ontario to a record high level, resulting in extensive shoreline flooding. Officials said opening dam floodgates would have worsened floods that were also occurring downstream.
