Welcome to First Contact Day!

First Contact Day pays tribute to the flight of the Phoenix and the pivotal first interaction between humans and Vulcans. It occurred on April 5, 2063. That night, the Vulcan survey ship the T’Plana-Hath landed in Bozeman, Montana, after tracking the warp signature of the Phoenix. The Phoenix was the spacecraft that marked mankind’s first successful attempt at achieving warp drive. Just minutes later, a robed Vulcan, displaying the split-fingered Vulcan greeting, made the acquaintance of Dr. Zefram Cochrane, pilot of the Phoenix and inventor of warp drive.

First Contact was made, and it paved the way to the formation of the United Federation of Planets.

Anyone eager to discover more about First Contact and First Contact Day should watch the TOS episode “Metamorphosis,” with Glenn Corbett as Cochrane; the TNG big-screen adventure First Contact, with James Cromwell in the part (which he played again, briefly, on Enterprise); the books First Contact (the novelization of the feature) and First Frontier; and also Voyagerepisode “Homestead,” in which Neelix and Naomi Wildman throw a party celebrating the 315th anniversary of First Contact Day, complete with heaping portions of Cochrane’s favorite food (cheese pierogies), a classic jukebox and Tuvok flashing the Vulcan salute and speaking the legendary line, “Live long and prosper.”

SU News

No Syracuse University basketball fan will ever forget that night. It is the date forever singed on the brain that their beloved Orange won the national championship, defeating Kansas 81-78. There is a lot you'll probably remember about that night forever. Hakim Warrick's block. Gerry McNamara hitting six 3-pointers in the first half. Carmelo Anthony's brilliance. But do you remember how Warrick was almost the goat before he was the hero? Do you remember that 'Melo, despite being the game's leading scorer, didn't score much at all in the game's key moments? April 7, 2018 will mark the 15th anniversary of SU's national title win over Kansas.

BC Stars Jerome Robinson, Ky Bowman to enter the 2018 NBA Draft; won't hire agents - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

According to a report from calendar-aficionado Jon Rothstein of FanRag Sports, both stars from Boston College’s backcourt have declared for the NBA Draft. Junior Jerome Robinson and sophomore Ky Bowman — both North Carolina natives — will enter the draft, but won’t hire agents.

Robinson and Bowman played in and started all 35 games for the Eagles this season; the two combined to average over 38 points per game. Both guards can handle the ball, run pick-and-roll and finish at the rim. That combined with their ability to shoot from deep, and Robinson (40.9 3P%) and Bowman (36.2 3P%) are appealing attacking guard prospects for the next level.

This season, Robinson, especially, blossomed up in Chestnut Hill; the 6-foot-5 junior guard morphed into the ACC’s best offensive wing. Robinson’s ability to shoot off the dribble is elitefor the college level. It’s no real surprise that he’s starting to crack the top 30 or 40 on some mock drafts.

However, since neither player hired an agent (yet), both are still eligible to return to BC. The NBA Draft combine is six weeks from now, up in Chicago; players have until June 11 to withdraw from the draft.

Boston College last made the NCAA Tournament in the 2008-09 season — with head coach Al Skinner.
