Welcome to Army Day!

Army Day honors those in the United States Army. It was created as a nationwide observance to draw attention to national defense, to acquaint the public with the Army's activities, and to highlight the need for military preparedness. Defense Test Day was held in 1924 and 1925. Congress did away with it and the Military Order of the World War under the direction of Colonel Thatcher Luquer established Army Day, which was first held on May 1, 1928. That date was chosen to try to overshadow the celebration of International Workers' Day by Communists. But, the following year it began being celebrated on April 6, on the anniversary of the United States' entry into World War I. On April 4, 1936, Franklin Roosevelt issued a proclamation for the day saying it should be acknowledged by Congress and be observed nationwide on April 6. Accordingly, Congress passed Resolution 5-75 on March 1, 1937, officially establishing Army Day. The day was last observed nationally on April 6, 1949. It was then replaced by Armed Forces Day. That new holiday did away with officially celebrating days dedicated to the Army, Navy, and Air Force, although Army Day continued to be observed unofficially.

Oshae Brissett’s Return to SU Seems Likely – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)

In a world where NBA prospects can’t wait to make the jump to the association, Syracuse forward Oshae Brissett seems to be an outlier.

"I definitely want to go back to school," Oshae Brissett said on TSN Radio Vancouver. He's opting to come back to Syracuse over the NBA because he wants to develop and boost his draft stock.

This is certainly good news for the Orange, as losing Brissett would be a big blow to the team’s frontline now that former SU recruit Darius Bazley is G-League bound.

Brissett told TSN Radio in Vancouver that he’s leaning more towards returning to Syracuse for his sophomore season to continue his development as an NBA prospect.

As you probably know by now, Brissett has the option to enter his name into the NBA Draft without hiring an agent. What this would do is allow him to be evaluated by NBA scouts, but not be forced to enter the draft, an option that Tyus Battle seems likely to exercise at this point.

ACC basketball players who have declared for 2018 NBA Draft and who's still deciding (PS; Waters)

The ACC's balance of power could take a dramatic shift with the decisions of several underclass players regarding the NBA draft.

Already players like Duke's Marvin Bagley, Miami's Lonnie Walker and Louisville's Ray Spalding have announced that they are signing with an agent and entering the draft, thereby ending their college careers.

Other players will enter the draft process, but retain their college eligibility by not signing with an agent.

College underclassmen have until April 22 to enter their names in the draft. The next step would be going to the NBA's pre-draft combine, which will be held May 16-20 in Chicago.

Finally, the deadline for withdrawing from the draft is June 11.

It sounds 'funky,' but Washington Nationals shrug off Mets' partnership on Syracuse Chiefs (PS; Kramer)

When it comes to competition on the field in the major leagues, the New York Mets and Washington Nationals are rivals.

For one unusual season in Syracuse this year, however, they will be business partners.

That was the scenario created when the Mets purchased the Chiefs in the off-season. The Mets own and operate the Chiefs now, but the Chiefs and Nationals have one season left on their player development agreement. So Washington will put its Triple-A players in NBT Bank Stadium this season and New York will assume that responsibility in 2019.

That gives the Mets and Nationals something of a shared financial interest in the Chiefs this season. The Mets are funding Washington's final season here, opening the checkbook for a wide rage of expenses from travel to equipment to clubhouse food.

"They bought this place, and I know they'll be here next year. But in the meantime, I don't think they're looking to sour relations with anyone. They are going to run this place as a business,'' said Syracuse pitching coach Brad Holman.

And to the extent that a winning team helps New York's bottom line, the Mets need Washington to at least create the impression it cares about putting a quality product in Syracuse instead of skimping on personnel costs.
