It coincides with William Shakespeare’s birthday and World Book and Copyright Day. English Language Day aims to entertain and inform people about the history, culture and achievements associated with the language. The day often features book-reading events, English quizzes, poetry and literature exchanges, and other activities that promote the English language. English Language Day is a global observance and not a public holiday. English is one of the two working languages of the UN Secretariat and one of the organization’s six official languages. English is often referred to as a "world language", or the lingua franca (bridge language or common language used by speakers of different languages) of the modern era because it is widely spoken. The UN first celebrated English Language Day on April 23, 2010. For a language that was used by only 3 tribes about 1500 years ago, English has official or special status in at least 75 countries with a total population of over two billion. SU News Lawrence Moten: Syracuse basketball legend mentors local youth on and off the court (DO; Gutierrez) Surrounded by squeaking shoes, bouncing basketballs and laughing children, Lawrence Moten sat on a set of bleachers and surveyed the gym at the Boys & Girls Club earlier this month. About 15 children were in the gym on East Fayette Street that Wednesday afternoon. He smiled as he scanned the court, watching basketballs float toward baskets and children chase after rebounds. As he took his eye off the court, a stray ball hit Moten. He yelled across the gym that he was doing an interview for a paper, and he didn’t want a rogue basketball hitting him in the head to throw him off track. “This is my crew, man,” he said moments later. On the court, he’s known as “Coach Mo.” Moten is a Syracuse University men’s basketball legend –– he’s the all-time leading scorer, and his jersey was retired in March in the Carrier Dome. He also volunteers at the Boys & Girls Club for three hours every weekday afternoon, where he shares insights to help the youth both on and off the court. He also volunteers as a mentor at Clary Middle School. My mother always told me, when I got here as a student: ‘Just don't stay up over on that hill. Look at the people in the town. Lawrence Moten ... The talented combo guard has been something of a sleeper, and still somehow finds himself ranked outside the top 100 on both 247 Sports (114) and Rivals (139). But based on what I saw of the future Orange guard at EYBL Dallas on Saturday, those rankings are looking way, way too low. Now, first things first: Goodine’s shooting efficiency was a little low this weekend in Dallas, as he wound up in the 30s on his field goal attempts. You have to factor in that, while he has some good players on his BABC squad, he’s far and away the best scoring option, and wound up taking a lot of tough shots and drawing his opposition’s better perimeter defenders. That said, Goodine looked every bit of the 6-foot-4 he’s listed at, and the St. Andrew’s (Rhode Island) star showed off athleticism and a strong skillset in the two games I watched of his, first against MEBO Elite and then against the Albany City Rocks. ... Kahlil Whitney one of the standout performers at EYBL Dallas | Otto's Grove (.com; Kelly) So if you follow me on Twitter, and chances are you do if you’re reading this, you’ll know that today I got to spend the day in Irving, Texas at Jermaine O’Neal’s Drive Nation sports facility to check out day two of the Dallas stop on the EYBL circuit. I’ll be adding my thoughts later about some of the players I watched, which included Syracuse’s 2019 guard commit Brycen Goodine, as well as 2019 targets Joseph Girard, Isaiah Stewart, John Bol Ajak, Khalif Battle, and more, but for now I wanted to focus on a player who completely blew me away. That’d be Kahlil Whitney, which you could probably have guessed by reading the headline of this piece. Standing at about 6-foot-6 or 6-foot-7, the talented swingman from Roselle Catholic (with a hometown of Chicago) was impressive from pregame warmups on. A phenomenal athlete with length and a nice skillset, Whitney attacks the rim with absolute hatred for that metal cylinder. When I say that Kahlil Whitney likes to dunk the basketball hard… I mean it. And he’s got the hops and the in-game aggression to throw it down often. But that’s the part of his game everyone already knew about, of course. Whitney’s known as a high-flying wing, but what really impressed me was the rest of his game. He’s more than just a great athlete. ... Here are our picks. The Platters with Drifters Revue The Platters are a multiplatinum vocal group that expertly blends the sensuality of R&B with the rhythms, sounds, and beats of pop and rock and roll. The Platters formed in 1952, producing hit after hit, but by 1961 the original group disbanded and formed their own versions of The Platters. After several court cases only one of The Platters groups, under the guidance of original member Herb Reed, was allowed to perform under the name. In 2015, The Platters released their latest LP, "Back to Basics with The Platters Live!". Some of their most notable hits, ones that helped secure their place in doo-wop history and in the Grammy Hall of Fame, include "Only You," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," and "The Great Pretender." Hailing from the UK, The Drifters Revue is a tribute to the music of The Drifters and Motown. Their sound is energized with some of the most influential and heartfelt music to come from these legendary powerhouses. Must be 21 and older to attend. Where: Del Lago Resort and Casino, 1133 State Route 414, Waterloo When: Friday, April 27 at 8 p.m. How much: Tickets range from $22 to $32.
