Welcome to National Arbor Day!

National Arbor Day is observed each year on the last Friday in April. Arbor Day is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees.

Trees provide vital protection for the Earth’s topsoil from erosion, oxygen, and homes for wildlife.

They also are a renewable resource that provides a variety of materials for building, fuel and office supplies.

Trees beautify our environment, provide shade on a sunny day and improve our quality of life. National Arbor Day celebrates all these things and aims for American generations to come to enjoy all the benefits trees have to offer.

It is the revolving door of college basketball: as one player leaves, another is on the way.

Amid the constantly changing team SU is facing so far this offseason, new offers are being made simultaneously.

The Orange offered Class of 2020 four-star Canadian Addison Patterson on Tuesday. Syracuse is currently one of six schools to make this move for Patterson, on a list with Arizona State, Florida, Oregon, USC and SMU.

The shooting guard ranks as the 111th best college basketball prospect form Canada and 25th at his position and ranks as the second best college basketball prospect in Ontatio, according to 247Sports.

Standing at 6’6” and 180 pounds, Patterson is an elite player that would add scoring depth and athleticism to a team that is looking to build on Final Four and Sweet Sixteen performances over the past three years.

Syracuse Basketball: Commission’s recommendations aren’t enough (itlh.com; Adler)

An independent commission has revealed its proposed changes to improve college basketball, but much more work needs to get done before I’m fully satisfied.

In October of last year, amid a massive federal-government investigation into allegations of bribery and fraud in collegiate basketball, an independent commission got formed to come up with changes to turn around my favorite sport.

On Wednesday, the Commission on College Basketball released its findings as part of a detailed report, in which it says at the onset that “men’s college basketball is deeply troubled. The levels of corruption and deception are now at a point that they threaten the very survival of the college game as we know it. It has taken some time to get here, and it will take time to change course.”

Among its recommendations, the commission states that the NCAA should work with the NBA to remove the league’s “one-and-done” rule, which requires players to reach 19 years old and be a year removed from high school to get eligible for the NBA Draft.

Why Marco Anthony has an opportunity to make an impact at UVA in 18-19 - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Mettien)

Virginia heads into an offseason needing to replace the production of graduated guards Devon Hall and Nigel Johnson. And unless there’s a surprise graduate transfer on the way, the Cavaliers aren’t bringing in a lot of new blood ready to step into the backcourt.

That means 2018-19 might be Marco Anthony’s time to shine.

Tony Bennett may ask a lot of the rising sophomore guard; Hall averaged 11.7 points per game, and was arguably the best defensive guard in the ACC. Johnson averaged five points off the bench and had the occasional huge game in his only season with the Cavs.

Virginia’s incoming recruiting class includes guards Kody Stattman and Kihei Clark, but given what it takes for true freshmen to earn minutes in Bennett’s system: nobody should expect either to contribute much next season. In fact, either could be redshirt candidates.

Clemson basketball Coach Brad Brownell likely to move up on ACC's salary ladder (greenvilleonline.com; Keepfer)

Coach Brad Brownell’s Clemson basketball team was projected to finish 13th in the Atlantic Coast Conference this past season.

The Tigers collectively scoffed at that notion and were upwardly mobile, finishing in a third-place tie.

Now Brownell may be upwardly mobile, too.

Brownell’s contract pays him $1.8 million per year, which ranks 10th among the 14 ACC coaches for which salaries are known, according to figures compiled by USA TODAY Sports. Compensation for new Pittsburgh coach Jeff Capel hasn't been disclosed.

Where Brownell will stack up financially once current negotiations culminate remains anyone’s guess, but it would appear that the Tigers’ recent 25-10 season and advancement to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 soon could have Brownell surpassing some of his league brethren.

“I would think so,” Clemson athletic director Dan Radakovich told USA TODAY Network - Carolinas in an exclusive interview Thursday. “The timing is right to look at that.”

The store will have three "firsts" for the Rochester-based grocer:

* It's the first Wegmans with shopping on two levels. Many of its stores have mezzanine-level seating, but not grocery departments on a second floor.

* It's the first store to feature Wegmans' new restaurant concept, Blue Dahlia Restaurant & Tequila Bar, serving Mexican food, craft cocktails and made-to-order salsa. The 146,500-square-foot store also will feature Wegmans' Burger Bar concept, a casual restaurant that serves burgers, sandwiches and salads.

* It's also one of the first Wegmans stores to have a "cart escalator" to carry carts between the first and second levels. Carts automatically lock into place on an escalator track when pushed through safety doors and into an escalator queue. The shopper usually travels on a traditional escalator beside it.
