He was the prototype for Bugs Bunny, having a similar personality, but looking a bit different. It is on the anniversary of the release of this short film that we celebrate Bugs Bunny Day. Bugs Bunny is an anthropomorphic gray hare with a relaxed and passive personality—but he is also a trickster. He became a cultural icon and is best known for starring in Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies, short films that were made by Warner Bros. from the 1930s through the 1960s. He appeared in many other formats, such as feature films, comic books, and musical records. He has appeared in more films than any other cartoon character, and TV Guide listed him as the greatest cartoon character of all time. In 1997, he became the first cartoon character to appear on a postage stamp. He even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The name "Bugs" or "Bugsy" means crazy or loopy and was used as a nickname in the first half of the twentieth century. For example, mobster Benjamin Siegel is best known as Bugsy Siegel. Today the name survives in phrases such as "You're bugging me," and in Bugs Bunny. SU News Butler recruiting: After weekend visit, Maryland prospect weighs options (indystar.com; Woods) The announcement won’t be as momentous as that of Romeo Langford ... but Bryce Golden’s college basketball destination will be important to the Butler Bulldogs. Golden, a 6-9 power forward who de-committed from Pittsburgh, wrapped up his official visits on a weekend trip to Butler. Illinois, Syracuse and Georgetown are also in the mix. Golden is expected to decide this week. Golden’s mother, Ellen DePoy-Golden, tweeted Saturday: “Thank you to the Coaches and Team of Butler University for providing @bryce_golden with a great last visit! @ButlerMensBB.” Butler recruiting: Butler in the mix for grad transfer who was all-league forward Butler recruiting shot-blocker from Canada She had similar Twitter posts after her son’s other visits. Golden is a senior at Saint James School in Hagerstown, Md. He is rated a four-star prospect by ESPN and a three-star by 247 Sports (203rd nationally) and Rivals. He averaged 15 points and eight rebounds for Saint James this season and is a three-time first team selection for All-Washington County. ... The Syracuse Stallions will be the newest team in the American Basketball Association coming in October. The ABA is a semi-professional basketball league running from October through April. Sunday, April 29th, officially began the process of forming the team. Led by head coach Pete Dourdas, a former OCC assistant and professional basketball player in Greece, the Stallions held its first of three tryout sections aiming to narrow the team down to 10-12 players. The team is mostly looking for players with collegiate experience. The next two tryouts come in May and June. A team invite-only camp will be in July and the final roster will be selected from that group. Tryouts, team practices and games will be held at Manlius Pebble Hill School in Syracuse. ... The sloop will kick off its spring season Saturday with a public sail from its Kingston home port. The Clearwater was made in 1969 to look like the Dutch sloops that used to carry food and other supplies up and down the Hudson River. Folk singer Pete Seeger and like-minded environmentalists wanted the ship to be a symbol of the river and a sort of floating classroom.
