Welcome to National Wig Out Day!

Have you ever wanted to dye your hair a different color or try out a new hairstyle, but were too scared to take the risk? Well, today is your opportunity to experiment. It’s National Wig Out Day! This celebration is similar to Halloween, but the focus is just on wigs.

Wig Out Day was invented in 2006 by Kate and Alice Clark. The sisters were able to inspire the residents of Bellingham, Washington to go to work wearing all different types of crazy wigs and then gather downtown at the end of the day for a party. Since then, Wig Out Day has grown and spread throughout the nation.

So go ahead and stop by your local wig shop or shop for wigs online. Your wig can be anything from a mullet to a 70’s style afro. Whatever you decide to wear on your head, just be sure to Wig Out!

Butler: Years after Bouie, Bona wins battle with Syracuse for Osunniyi (oleantimes.com; Butler)

Jim Satalin figured he was in the metaphorical driver’s seat.

In early spring 1976, the former St. Bonaventure men’s basketball coach, then in his fourth year at the helm, was asked to speak at Kendall High School’s year-end basketball banquet.

In the ongoing recruiting battle for Kendall star Roosevelt Bouie, Satalin couldn’t help but believe his presence at the banquet weighed heavily in Bona’s favor.

A couple of weeks later, on April 3, Syracuse coach Roy Danforth left for Tulane and Jim Boeheim was elevated to the head position. Bouie had taken a liking to Boeheim for all that he had taught him at SU’s annual summer camps.

The next day, the 6-foot-11 Bouie stepped off the bus to Kendall coach Dick Reynolds holding a newspaper with a headline about Boeheim. They went straight to Reynolds’ office, called Boeheim and committed to the Orangemen.

Syracuse Basketball: Tyus Battle to work out for the New York Knicks (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Syracuse basketball phenom Tyus Battle will be working out for the New York Knicks this weekend. ITLH breaks down the potential fit.
Syracuse basketball star Tyus Battle has been a popular guy the last couple of the weeks. Earlier this week we revealed that Battle had worked out for the Brooklyn Nets and the Orlando Magic.

While last week Battle had worked out for the Los Angeles Clippers. Now he will be heading to the big apple, per Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog.com:

“Tyus Battle to work out for the New York Knicks this weekend”
Battle is maximizing the time he has remaining before he has to make a decision on his NBA future (May 30th at midnight is the latest he can make a decision).

The New York Knicks only have two picks in the 2018 NBA Draft, so they have to make them count. They own the No. 9 overall pick and No. 37 overall. Obviously Battle is not in play for a top-10 selection, but he is very much in the conversation for the Knicks’ secound draft choice.

ACC Basketball: 5 rising stars to keep an eye on in 2018-19 (bustingbrackets.com; Anderson)

5. Frank Howard, Syracuse
Syracuse Orange guard Frank Howard is due for a big senior season after breaking out in 2017-18. Howard went from starting 14 games in 2016-17 to starting all 37 contests for the Orange last season.

Look for Howard to replace the contributions of Tyus Battle, last year’s leading scorer, this upcoming season. Howard put up 14.4 points, 4.7 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.8 steals per contest for Syracuse last season. He didn’t shoot the ball particularly well in 2017-18 from the field (37.6 percent), but that’s what the offseason is for.

Howard’s scoring average shot up in 2017-18. He averaged just 4.5 points per game as a sophomore. While shooting at volume, Howard showed flashes of what he’s capable of. He eclipsed the 20-point plateau in four contests last season as Syracuse posted a record of 23-14.

Howard led the ACC in total steals (68) and steals per game last season, something that should help the Syracuse defense in 2018-19. He also played 38.4 minutes per contest, second in the ACC and in the NCAA as well. He’s got the durability and conditioning down already, now he’ll just need the green light from head coach Jim Boeheim. It helps he’ll have forward Oshae Brissett returning, too. Brissett put up 14.9 points and 8.8 rebounds in his freshman season for Syracuse in 2017-18.

4. Temple “T.J.” Gibbs, Notre Dame

K's Plan: Duke basketball officially headed to Canada this summer - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

Well, it’s official: later this summer, Duke basketball is headed north of the border. In August, Duke will trek north to Canada for three exhibition games and a series of (10) practices. This announcement comes about three weeks after news started to surface that Duke was likely to make this trip a reality.

You may remember: last fall, Duke was scheduled to take a trip to the Dominican Republic; however, that idea was shelved due to Mike Krzyzewski’s surgery. Under NCAA rules, college basketball teams are allowed to make foreign trips once every four years.

Duke Canada Schedule
Aug. 15: Duke — Ryerson, 7 p.m.

Aug. 17: Duke — University of Toronto, 6 p.m.

Aug. 19: Duke vs. McGill, 3 p.m.

The Appeal of Canada
Duke is in the process of replacing its entire starting lineup — the majority of which will be drafted next month into the NBA. This affords Duke’s star-studded recruiting class extra time to gel and work together, which could prove to be invaluable come the start of the regular season.

There is a recruiting appeal, too. Duke’s top incoming freshman — RJ Barrett — hails from Canada. This season in the NBA, there were 11 Canadians in the league; some of the top rising talents in the association — Andrew Wiggins (Maple Jordan!), Jamal Murray (a serious stud) — are products of Canada.

The upshot: Canada is a basketball nation on the rise. Any foothold a college team can make as an appealing destination could be a potential boon.

ACC Basketball: Virginia Tech Wrap-Up and Recruiting (acc.sportswar.com; Atkinson)

This spring we wrap up last basketball season with a look ahead to next year. We’ll break down the recruiting classes as they currently stand for all 15 ACC men’s basketball programs. Bear in mind, recruiting is incredibly fluid and things will almost certainly change before the season begins.

The Hokies had a solid season, going 21-12 overall and 10-8 in conference play. They took the seven seed in the ACC Tournament, but lost to a healthy Notre Dame squad. Despite the early exit, Tech earned a second consecutive NCAA berth, dosing so for only the second time in program history. Unfortunately for Buzz Williams, they went on to lose in the first round once again.

For Virginia Tech fans, this season may have left a bit of a bad taste in their mouths. The Hokies held halftime leads in each of their final three games and blew all three of them. Perhaps the most frustrating of these was their ACC Tournament game against the Irish, in which they blew a 20-point lead in the first half to lose 71-65.

The sting from this collapse was hardly rectified in their next game, an NCAA Tournament matchup with Alabama. The Hokies led by a slim two-point margin at the half, but thanks in part to a questionable fifth foul called on point guard Justin Robinson,Tech came up just short 86-83.

Syracuse Jazz Fest canceled: No festival this summer for the first time in 33 years (PS; Baker)

For the first time since 1984, there will be no Jazz Fest in Syracuse this summer.

Syracuse Jazz Fest Founder and Executive Director Frank Malfitano announced Thursday there wasn't enough money to host the free annual event in 2018.

"A funny thing happened on the way to Jazz Fest this year," Malfitano said. "We decided that we could not mount it. There will be no Jazz Fest this summer."

Malfitano said he plans to bring Jazz Fest back in 2019 and it will be "bigger and better than ever."

The festival has an annual operating budget of around $400,000. Malfitano said the event came up about $150,000 short this year.

Jazz Fest is a non-for-profit supported by a combination of county money and private sponsorship. The title sponsor, M&T Bank, decided to step aside after last year's festival. M&T was the title sponsor for more than 20 years.

Festival organizers were unable to plug that hole in the budget.

"We had a great festival planned," Malfitano said. "Unfortunately we couldn't raise the money."

What is with that Duke Canadian trip schedule. Why aren't they playing Carleton University? I was at that Carleton game versus us in Ottawa a few years ago. It was a great game which went to O/T (albeit C J Fair did not play). The Ravens passed the ball within our zone as well as Duke or UNC ever has. They are a perennial power up here.

I think you answered your own question.

Those snarky Duke fan morons like to “insult” Syracuse as being “Canada”, now their school is trying to recruit Canada.

I hate everything about that program with a passion.

And agreed, I remember that Carleton game was a good test for that team.
