Welcome to Ascension of

Bahá’u’lláh!

The Ascension of Bahá’u’lláh is one of the holiest days of the Bahá'í faith. It celebrates Bahá’u’lláh, the founder of the Bahá'í faith, as well as his teachings. It was on today's date in 1892 that he passed away. He summoned his followers to his side six days before his death, telling them to stay united and keep worshipping as he had taught them. After he died at The Mansion of Bahjí, his followers mourned him for a week afterward.

In modern times, The Ascension of Bahá’u’lláh is a day of rest, where observers don't go to school or work. They celebrate Bahá’u’lláh's life and reflect on his suffering. They observe the holiday starting at 3 am, the exact time that Bahá’u’lláh died. His writings are read to better understand his message, and there is also often chanting and an effort to reach a peaceful state.

Syracuse Basketball: 20 Greatest Players to Play for Head Coach Jim Boeheim (bustingbrackets.com; Freeman)

Jim Boeheim has built himself a Hall of Fame career at the University of Syracuse. Here are the greatest players he’s coached over the years.

For a college coach no matter what the sport is, their dream always is to lead their alma mater to the promise land. That was the case for Boeheim, who a decade after graduating came back to become the head coach of Syracuse.

Starting as an Independent, Boeheim led the team to the NCAA Tournament in his first three years in charge. And even after moving into the Big East, the Orange still received invitations to the Big Dance. It took 10 years until the program under Boeheim made the Final Four, which would be the first of five different trips.

In 2003 led by a star freshman, Syracuse won the National Championship, capping off a 30-win season. That victory cemented Boeheim’s legacy at both the program and nationally, with more accomplishments coming along the way.

The most impressive feats may have been the last few years, where the Orange has taken a couple of teams that barely made the tournament to make surprising deep runs. That legendary 2-3 defense zone still has yet to be solved, even after 30 years of scouting reports.

Not only is Boeheim an all-time great, he’s still one of the best currently around. I had him ranked No. 5 from my earlier piece concerning the best active head coaches, and have been ranking the top players for each of them throughout the month.

Life of a Syracuse Fan the Last Time LeBron James WASN’T in the NBA Finals – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

Imagine this: the year was 2010 and LeBron James was NOT in the NBA Finals. Blasphemy right? But believe it or not kids aged 8 and under, there was once a time when the King didn’t make it to the promised land.

After losing to the Celtics in the conference finals, LeBron bolted to Miami where he said he was going to win seven Finals. Fast forward eight years and LeBron has played for a championship in each year and shows no signs of forfeiting that opportunity to anyone else in the Eastern Conference.

Meanwhile in Syracuse, a lot of things were changing that summer. Let’s take a trip down memory lane to the summer of the last LeBron-free Finals.

For starters, the last time James wasn’t in the Finals, the Orange was in the Big East, not the ACC. That move came a couple of years later. However, there were rumblings of SU joining the Big Ten. But the conference would go on to add Rutgers and Maryland shortly after instead. While the Big East is the Orange’s rightful grounds, Syracuse fits the B1G much better than either Rutgers or Maryland. After all, SU is closer to a Great Lake than the Atlantic Coast, something neither of those schools can claim. Sigh… If only conferences used logic.

Pension deal removes potential $180 million hurdle in Tops bankruptcy (PS; TNS)

Tops Markets has settled a major pension dispute that could have cost the company more than $180 million, making its path out of bankruptcy clearer.

The settlement, reached earlier this month following two days of meetings with a mediator, could end a fight that has dragged on for more than four years. The dispute has cast a cloud over Tops' finances, as well as the retirement funds of more than 600 workers at a grocery warehouse in Lancaster that the supermarket company acquired in December 2013.

While the details are still being finalized and the deal must be approved by a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge, the settlement would resolve one of the biggest financial hurdles that Tops faces as it tries to restructure its business and emerge from bankruptcy.

For Tops, the deal frees it from an expense that could have cost it more than $100 million. The agreement means Tops no longer would be liable to pay as much as $183 million over 20 years to meet funding obligations to the Teamsters pension fund.
