NBA Draft feedback helped convince Tyus Battle to return to Syracuse basketball (PS; Waters)

Tyus Battle didn't want to be an NBA draft pick. He wants to be an NBA player.

That subtle but important difference was the determining factor in Battle's decision to to remove his name from consideration for the NBA Draft and return to Syracuse for his junior year.

"The feedback he was getting was that he would be drafted, but not in the position where he wanted to be,'' Battle's father, Gary, said late Wednesday night just minutes after Battle submitted his paperwork to the NBA's office.

"It wasn't likely that he was going to be drafted in the first round,'' Gary Battle said. "We were hearing maybe first half of the second half, but there's nothing definite. He wanted to be drafted, but he wanted to be able to play.''

Battle, a 6-foot-6 guard who led Syracuse in scoring at 19.2 points per game last season, decided another year in college could help him ac
hieve his goal of being a first-round pick.

Syracuse Basketball: Tyus Battle said staying at SU was an ‘easy decision’ (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Syracuse basketball star Tyus Battle has finally 100% confirmed his return to the hill for his Junior campaign. ITLH breaks down the big story.

Many Syracuse basketball fans were worried that perhaps we had another potential ‘Darius Bazley‘ situation on our hands. Let me explain.

Around 5:30 p.m. EST, it was widely reported that Tyus Battle was returning to Syracuse. All of us celebrated and expressed waves of euphoria we hadn’t seen since the Orange made the NCAA Tournament on Selection Sunday.

In the midst of our celebration, a cryptic tweet from basketball insider Adam Zagorialeft the door open that perhaps Battle hadn’t made up his mind quite yet:

“Just talked to Gary Battle who said there is no official decision from Tyus yet on his future.”
Then we saw a pump fake from Battle on Instagram. He apparently revealed that he was coming back to the Orange and then quickly deleted this tweet. Thus the Zagoria conspiracy theories started to potentially make sense.

Oh no. Did we start to taunt before we reached the end zone? After a tumultuous 12 months where we’ve seen Taurean Thompson suddenly leave the program, Geno Thorpe leave during the season, Darius Bazley become quite literally the first player ever to skip out on college and go to the G-League, were we witnessing another roller coaster chapter in the lives of Syracuse Basketball fans?

Elite Class of 2019 Recruit Isaiah Stewart Puts Syracuse In His Top 10 – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

In a day that’s been overshadowed by Tyus Battle’s draft decision uncertainty, the Orange got some good news regarding its future. Five star center Isaiah Stewart put Syracuse in his top ten for potential landing spots.
Wasn’t Easy Thanking God For Everything…Top 10 . @TiptonEdits pic.twitter.com/Be3iHXYaNP— IsaiahStewart.II (@Dreamville_33) May 31, 2018Stewart is a 6-foot-8 big man that checks in as 247Sports’ no. 8 recruit in the country. He hails from nearby Rochester where he played at McQuaid, but currently plays his high school ball at the prestigious La Lumiere School. The boarding school has produced recent talents like NBA bound prospect Jaren Jackson Jr., Michigan tournament hero Jordan Poole and the centerpiece of the NCAA’s FBI probe Brian Bowen.

Stewart also lists a number of other ACC foes in his final ten. The likes of Duke, Notre Dame and Louisville also appear.
It’s also worth noting that Washington is on his list. Former Orange assistant Mike Hopkins had a good relationship with Stewart while he was scouting him and Stewart has said in a previous interview that Coach Hopkins, now the head coach at Washington, was one of the reasons why he liked SU so much.
Stewart currently plays his AAU ball with Albany City Rocks. There, he is a teammate of fellow SU target Joe Girard and is a former teammate of Jim Boeheim’s son and current SU walk-on Buddy Boeheim.

With his return to Miami, can Dewan Huell become the ACC's top post talent? - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

With only a few days left before the deadline to withdraw from the NBA Draft, Dewan Huell made a decision. The rising junior, one of the biggest recruits in program history, announced that he plans to return to Miami for his third season in Coral Gables.

Everyone has their own route… Trust The Process #Butterflyszn pic.twitter.com/ftmbKLfH3U

— Dewan Huell (@DewanGoesFor_20) May 26, 2018
The move by Huell makes sense — his status as a draft prospect was limited. However, his return offers plenty of intrigue, too.

Over the last few weeks, several ACC players have come to a conclusion as to where they plan to play next season. Some, like Josh Okogie and Bryant Crawford, will remain in the draft pool; others, like Luke Maye and Torin Dorn, plan to return.

Dewan Huell falls into that second category, which puts him in a unique place: Can he be the ACC’s most talented post player in 2018-19? Hear me out.

The field ain’t bad, either
Inside the ACC this past season, the league posted some of the nation’s most potent post players. It started with Marvin Bagley and Wendell Carter at Duke; it continued to NC State’s Omer Yurtseven. Ben Lammers, Ray Spaling and Doral Moore are all really good, too.

North Carolina’s Luke Maye went from overnight celebrity to one of the ACC’s top five players; a transition that was truly incredible to watch and log.

Of this aforementioned group, Maye is the only player who will return to his school. This is important. The departure of most of these players immediately ascends Huell up the ladder inside the ACC, in terms of frontcourt talent.

(It would also remiss of me to not mention Clemson’s Elijah Thomas, too — a post-up force for Brad Brownell’s Tigers.)

Syracuse's Apizza Regionale at No. 2 in USA Today's search for best NY pizza (PS; Weaver)

Apizza Regionale, the wood-fired pizza place co-owned with the founder of Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, is in the running for USA Today's search for the best pizza in New York.

"It's amazing," said Apizza owner-operator Paul Messina.

Messina grew up on Staten Island eating pizzas from Denino's, Joe's in Manhattan and Di Fara's in Brooklyn. Those shops are also in the top 10, as of today, along with Apizza.

"Domenico de Marco, he's the owner of Di Fara's," Messina said. "To me, that's the Holy Grail of pizza shops. To be a part of that list is absolutely mind-blowing."

Apizza is among 20 pizza restaurants competing to be the 10 Best, a contest run by USA Today. Thirteen of the 20 are from New York City. Voting for the contest is open until noon on June 26.

Messina and John Stage -- who founded the Dinosaur nearly 30 years ago -- opened Apizza in March 2016 across the street from the popular barbecue restaurant. Messina described Stage as a financial partner and mentor, who helps consult on the menu. Messina is the one running the restaurant.
