Welcome to Thank God It's Monday Day!

As a schoolchild once complained: “Mondays are bad enough, but why do they have to be at the start of the week?” It’s no easier for the workers of the world: on average, we struggle to the office for over 2,000 working Mondays, to see the same glum faces.

But if everyone takes the step together, Thank God It’s Monday Day shows us what working life could be like. A charity bake sale, a team lunch or even a stroll around the block – with no talking business! – can raise morale. Many companies help to organise a trip or a learning day: activity, music and the visual arts all stimulate our minds more than we realise.

Tyus Battle was correct to stay at Syracuse, bucking a trend - The Juice Online (the juixce; Dagostino)

As you know by now, Syracuse guard Tyus Battle is staying put for another year. It appeared he was not given any guarantees that he would be a first round pick and, based on the feedback he got from NBA scouts and teams, there are some things he needs to work on before he moves to the next level. Since when has THAT every stopped a college basketball player from entering the draft?

Almost two weeks ago, Syracuse.com’s Mike Waters dusted off the list of Syracuse players who have entered the draft early in recent memory. Waters opined that most of the guys made the right decision to enter the draft when they did. Now, the vast majority of the time, I feel Waters does a great job and is a go-to source for Syracuse hoops news. I don’t often disagree with him. But, when I do…it’s on this subject.

Too often, I’ve watched Syracuse players jump into the professional ranks and wonder, “Why now? Stay one more year and see your stock rise.”

Sure, there are the no-doubters:
  • Carmelo Anthony was picked 3rd overall in the 2003 draft after winning a national championship for Syracuse in his freshman year…duh. Get outta town and go dominate in the NBA (which he did).
  • Wesley Johnson in 2010 and Dion Waiters in 2012 both (perhaps surprisingly) were drafted 4th overall. Maximizing their draft stock, it made total sense for them to each make the leap to the NBA.
Then there are others that fall between being a good decision and a bad decision:
  • Jonny Flynn, drafted 6th overall in 2009, was selected by Minnesota, who passed over Stephen Curry twice to draft Ricky Rubio with the 5th pick and Flynn with the 6th pick. If not for a debilitating hip injury, Flynn may very well still be in the league.

Syracuse Basketball Recruiting: SU could be elite in 2019 (itlh.com; Adler)

Some developments to share on the Syracuse basketball recruiting front, as a pair of highly coveted 2019 prospects are making headlines.
The SU hoops outfit likely has its roster set for the 2018-19 campaign, now that star wing Tyus Battle has decided to come back for his junior term.

Yet even as we eagerly anticipate the next season of Orange basketball, the team is of course eyeing the future, which means recruiting for its 2019 class is in full swing.

Two of the main studs on Syracuse’s radar screen for that class are five-star center Isaiah Stewart and three-star combo guard Joseph Girard III, who is one of the most prolific scorers in the country.

Stewart took to Twitter earlier this week to reveal his 10 finalists, and the ‘Cuse, fortunately, made the cut. The other nine schools are Duke, Georgetown (huh?), Indiana, Louisville, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Texas, Villanova (the defending national champions), and Washington, which is led by former SU assistant Mike Hopkins.

Tyus Battle makes Syracuse basketball a legit contender (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

The return of Tyus Battle to the Syracuse basketball squad makes this team a true contender. Don’t believe? Check the facts Jack.
It’s true pinch yourselves Syracuse basketball fans, Tyus Battle is back. So what does that mean for SU’s chances next season? They just got a whole lot better.

If you don’t want to take my word for it, just check what the experts are saying. We’ll go slow through this process so no one gets lost.

First off SU is a top-20 National Championship contender according to the latest Vegas odds.

But that’s only because Battle returned, SU wasn’t getting that same love before. Experts across the league were in a consensus, the Orange weren’t a top-25 team without Battle on it.

Louisville beats out Tennessee for desperately needed grad transfer (diehards.com; Wooden)

With only eight scholarship players on its roster eligible to play in the 2018-19 season, the Louisville Cardinals basketball program is in need of bodies as it prepares for Chris Mack’s first year in charge.

But the Cardinals need more than just bodies — they need to add quality players worthy of being placed on scholarship. The addition of Richmond graduate transfer Khwan Fore on Saturday might be a best-of-both-worlds situation.

Fore announced he’d be transferring to Louisville after originally committing to play for Rick Barnes and the Tennessee Volunteers, according to a report from the Louisville Courier Journal’s Jeff Greer. The 6-foot point guard should provide immediate depth in the Cardinals back court and potentially can provide some scoring pop if his career at Richmond is any indicator.

In two seasons as a starter, Fore averaged 11.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. However, he’ll serve as more of a slashing point guard after shooting just 31.9 percent from behind the 3-point line in his career.

Smash Mouth at Taste of Syracuse was a weirdly good time (Review)
(PS; Fitrzpatrick)

For those among our readership above a certain age, it may be difficult to understand the unique position Smash Mouth holds in the mythology of the 90's Kid. There was a period of a couple years at the turn of the new millennium when they were so ubiquitous that a young, musically-uninformed person could be forgiven for thinking they were the only "rock band" putting out music at the time. The gravelly, snarky voice of lead singer Steve Harwell was present to the point of ridiculousness on the radio, on tv, and in movies. Many of their songs have been imprinted in the minds of people who grew up during those years, including mine, whether we meant it to happen or not.

That being said, until getting this assignment, I had no idea Smash Mouth was even still together. If asked I would have guessed that they had all hung up their instruments and become used car salesmen by now; their brand of dork-funk immortalized in jokes and internet memes, but relegated forever to the past. A silly memory of a very strange time in American culture, the early 2000's.
As it turns out they're still together, and still touring, and they played at Taste of Syracuse of all places, at the Express Mart Main Stage. Weird.

13. Syracuse: Tyus Battle’s decision to return puts the Orange back in position to make another March run. The Battle-Frank Howard combo with the improving Oshae Brissett and the confident Marek Dolezaj and Paschal Chukwu gives the Orange one of the most experienced starting fives in the ACC.
