Welcome to Flag Day!

  • The first version of the American flag came out in 1777, which displayed 13 stripes and 13 stars and since then there have been 27 official versions of it, reported the Huffington Post.
  • There is no evidence to prove Betsy Ross designed the first American flag. The only record to support this view came from her grandson in 1870 almost 100 years after the flag debuted, reported the Culture Trip.
  • The current 50 star pattern was created by 17-year-old high school student Robert G. Heft in 1958 for a class project and was chosen by President Dwight D. Eisenhower out of 1,500 entries.
  • The idea of celebrating Flag Day in the U.S. was presented by a teacher named Bernard Cigrand in 1885 in Wisconsin but it wasn’t until 1949 that Congress passed legislation marking it as a national holiday. However, it is a national holiday only in Pennsylvania, where the flag was officially created, reported History.
  • According to the explanation given by Charles Thomson, the Secretary of Congress, in 1782, the red in the national flag stands for valor and hardiness, blue stands for justice, perseverance, and vigilance while white stands for innocence and purity.

Syracuse basketball guard Howard Washington 'hitting milestones' in knee rehab (PS; Ditota)

It was, said Howard Washington, "a freak accident."

The Syracuse basketball point guard was elevating to make a pass during a routine group practice drill at the Melo Center, when he felt it. Something had gone terribly wrong with his right knee.

"I went to take off and it just kind of buckled under me. That's how it happened. There wasn't contact or anything like that," Washington said. "Playing live 3-on-3 and I was just jumping to throw a skip pass or a jump pass and it just kind of gave out on me on the way up."

Washington spoke about that fateful winter afternoon on Wednesday. He is, he said, making significant progress on his rehabilitation from surgery to repair a partially torn ACL. His injury, he said, involved a partially torn MCL, too. He waited three weeks for the MCL to heal before having February surgery on the ACL.

He missed the rest of Syracuse's season in a year when the Orange was reduced to two healthy, functioning guards. Washington said the timing of the injury -- eight games into the ACC season -- happened just as he was beginning to feel as if he understood what SU coaches wanted from him, just when he was beginning to feel that SU coach Jim Boeheim had gained some confidence in what he could provide. Washington played 24 minutes in an overtime loss to Florida State and logged 10 minutes, scoring four points and collecting three assists against Pittsburgh right before he went down.

Elite 2020 recruit Andre Jackson to visit Syracuse basketball on Thursday (PS; Waters)

Andre Jackson, a highly-rated recruit in the 2020 Class, will visit the Syracuse University campus on Thursday, according to a source.

This will be an unofficial visit since Jackson just finished his sophomore year of high school.

Jackson is a 6-foot-6 small forward at Albany (N.Y.) Academy. He averaged about 17 points and 8 rebounds per game for the Cadets last season.

The native of Amsterdam, N.Y., is a high-flying athlete.

"He's 6-6 and can put his head on the rim,'' Jim Hart, who coaches Jackson's Albany City Rocks AAU team, said in a story published on syracuse.com last September. "I'm not exaggerating.''

Jackson is one of the fastest-rising players in the country. He is rated the No. 90 player in the 2020 class by Future150.com even though that site lists him at just 6-foot-2. Meanwhile, lists Jackson at 6-6 and ranks him at No. 35 in his class.

Orange Watch: Syracuse football, basketball comes to NYC in November - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: Syracuse Orange basketball and football + Madison Square Garden and Yankee Stadium over a three day span = a “New York State of Mind.”

Monday’s announcement rounding out the Syracuse portion of November’s 2K Classic bracket early in the upcoming basketball schedule, home games against Eastern Washington (Nov. 6) and Morehead State (Nov. 10), along with the previously released 2K semifinal date at Madison Square Garden against Connecticut (Nov. 15) followed by a game the next night against either Iowa or Oregon, will make for a pretty nice three day Orange run in the Big Apple.

Basketball Thursday evening against arch-rival Connecticut for the fourth consecutive year overall and third straight time at The Garden, am unusual regular-season, inter-sectional game Friday night against a Power Five school in Iowa or Oregon, followed by a Saturday afternoon subway trip up to Yankee Stadium to watch the Orange try to make a huge impression, and perhaps a must-win for bowl consideration, in front of a sellout crowd and national NBC audience against Notre Dame.

Nothing like thinking about an Orange “November to Remember” during the down time of June.

Texas Pete Takes: Ky Bowman will lead the ACC in scoring, usage rate in 2018-19 - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

It’s the college basketball offseason, which is the perfect time to kick the can on some ideas/thoughts for next season. However, in lieu of generic hot take bloviation, we will keep things slightly more mild, more reasoned. Drawing inspiration from one of our regional delicacies — a hot sauce from Winston-Salem — welcome to a new ACC Analytics page segment: Texas Pete Takes!

The (Bow)Man of Campus

One of the ACC’s most exciting players over the last two seasons, Ky Bowman, decided to return to Boston College for his junior season. Bowman flirted with the NBA Draft, but ultimately, chose to return to Chestnut Hill.

This, of course, was significant news. BC had just celebrated its best season under Jim Christian, but with Jerome Robinson taking his silky-smooth game to the NBA, sustaining that success was in jeopardy. Robinson will be near-impossible to replace; he was just that good in 2017-18.

However, with Bowman back, along with an interesting cast of characters — Jordan Chatman, Steffon Mitchell and Nik Popovic — and a solid two-man recruiting haul, there’s plenty of hope for the Eagles. For that to happen, though, Bowman has to freak out — in the best way possible.

This brings me to my point: Ky Bowman will lead the ACC in scoring and usage rate in 2018-19.

The Field

Last season in the ACC, 21 players averaged 14 or more points per game (minimum 20 games) — led by Duke’s Marvin Bagley(21 points). Of that group, only nine return. All nine of those players posted usage rates north of 20 percent, too, per Sports Reference — bookended by Temple Gibbs (20.9 percent) and Tyus Battle (28.1 percent).

Woman gets head stuck in tailpipe at country music festival (video) (PS; video; Herbert)

Talk about an exhaust-ing ordeal.

A young woman got her head stuck in a tailpipe at a country music festival in Minnesota over the weekend. Video of the unusual incident went viral, being viewed more than 3 million times on Facebook.

According to the Associated Press, firefighters used a power saw to free the woman from a truck's exhaust pipe at the Winstock Music Festival in Winsted, about 40 miles west of Minneapolis. She was rescued and apparently unharmed after spending 45 minutes with her head stuck.

KARE-TV reports alcohol may have been a factor in the incident: The McLeod County Sheriff's Office says she was cited for underage drinking and escorted out of the festival, which featured performances by Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert and Luke Combs.
