Welcome to Leon Day!

The lead-up to Christmas seems to come earlier and earlier each year, and this is no more evident than in the celebration of Leon Day. Taking its name from the reverse lettering of "Noel," Leon Day precedes Christmas in July celebrations and takes place exactly a half year before Christmas. The counting down of days before Christmas has been going on for centuries, and it is not known exactly when Leon Day began. It has recently grown in popularity, though, on account of the internet; fans of Christmas often wish each other a "Happy Leon Day" on social media.

Throwback Monday:

1996: Mile High Madness: Syracuse beats Georgia in OT )(msn.com)

Georgia's Pertha Robinson hit a three-pointer to put the Bulldogs back in front, 81-80. But John Wallace had the last say, drilling a three-pointer from the top of the key with three seconds left to continue Syracuse's road that eventually ended in the national championship game loss to Kentucky.

Syracuse Orange: What to expect from the offense | isportsweb (isportsweb.com; Godnick)

The Syracuse Orange struggled to score the ball last year to say the least, as they relied upon their stifling defense to keep them in games late. Their lack of shooting turned them into an isolation-based offense, and their lack of depth made it relatively easy to prepare for what their offense would show.

The Orange are returning a lot of their impact players from last year, and with a few new additions, the Syracuse offense can return to dominating and helping its defense, rather than getting stagnant late in games.

There will be a lot of dribble penetration from the perimeter

The lack of big men who can score with their back to the basket on the Syracuse roster leaves them relying on their perimeter players to generate the bulk of the offense. Frank Howard, Tyus Battle, and Oshae Brissett have what it takes to get to the rim on their own, but it’ll be their ability to find the open teammate that sets this team apart.

While their ability to get in the lane will be needed to help them score, that perimeter trio will also need to help generate offense for others if they want to see this team take that next step.

Tyler Lydon healthy, hosting Pine Plains camp this week (poughkeepsiejournal.com; Haynes)

When Tyler Lydon hosts an estimated 100 children at his basketball camp on Monday, the Denver Nuggets forward will be able to offer hands-on coaching, even demonstrating some of the maneuvers he’ll teach the young pupils.

Well, that’s to be expected at an athletic clinic. But it is significant for Lydon, in that it’s another indication of his improving health, now sixth months removed from knee surgery.

“It’s going very well,” the Elizaville native said of his rehab. “I was cleared to play three weeks ago and I’ve been able to do the things I used to before the injury.”

► Inside Tyler Lydon's draft day: Silly string & cheap champagne

The former Pine Plains basketball star, who was chosen in the first round of last year’s NBA Draft, is holding a basketball camp this week at Stissing Mountain High School, his old stomping grounds.

The program was the brainchild of Lydon, his older brother Zach and close friend Justin Cooper — former high school teammates and current college basketball players — along with his cousin, Jereme Mergendahl, of Red Hook.

The camp runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Monday to Friday and will offer basketball coaching for kids, grades three to 10.

ACC Basketball: What will ACC prospects bring to their NBA teams? (bustingbrackets.com; Bowers)

ACC basketball is a powerhouse when it comes to sending players to the NBA. Where is each former star who was selected in the NBA Draft heading?

The first day of summer marked the first day of pro status for several top ACC prospects. Several former stars of the conference were selected in the 2018 NBA Draft in Brooklyn, with Duke products Marvin Bagley and Wendell Carter being the first off the board. The two big men will be paid to play the game in Sacramento and Chicago, respectively.

In addition, increasingly lauded Boston College Eagle Jerome Robinson will take his prolific offensive skillset to LA in the hopes of giving life to the Clippers’ offense. Lonnie Walker of Miami will take his talents to the Alamo, joining a Spurs team in turmoil over the status of star Kawhi Leonard. Lastly, Georgia Tech’s sharpshooter Josh Okogie will help the Minnesota Timberwolves continue their resurgence while Grayson Allen goes to SLC to strengthen the Jazz’ backcourt.

Now that all of the players have been selected and their futures are a little bit less blurry, let’s take a look at each ACC player selected in the draft and discuss how they can impact their first NBA franchise.

Upstate New York enjoys nice weather during the week (PS; Montreuil)

Upstate New York's weather will spend much of this week in the comfortable zone before a big heat wave unfolds for the weekend.

Temperatures early this week will start out below normal but will be closer to average during the middle and latter part of the week.

High pressure is building in from the northwest on Monday and will move overhead Monday night. After a sunny, slightly breezy day with highs ranging from the mid 60s to the mid 70s, Monday night will turn quite cool.

Mid and even low 40s are likely Tuesday morning across the typically colder valleys in the Adirondacks, Catskills, and Central New York. Most areas will start in the upper 40s, with some morning lows around 50 degrees in the Capital Region and Finger Lakes.

The temperature will rebound nicely Tuesday afternoon, with highs ranging through the 70s.

Wednesday's focus will be an incoming low pressure system that could spread strong thunderstorms into Western New York, and possibly the Finger Lakes and North Country late in the day. Uncertainty on storm development and timing is high, so continue to monitor the forecast for Wednesday evening.

Rain and thunderstorms may linger into the first half of Thursday as well before that system pulls away. Some sunshine will be possible late in the day and into Friday.
