ESPN metric has Syracuse at No. 7 in preseason ranking (itlh.com; Patrick)

ESPN’s Basketball Power Index sees the Syracuse basketball program as one of the 10 best in the nation heading into the 2018-19 season.

Under head coach Jim Boeheim, the Syracuse basketball program has developed into one that is known for their consistent success. With Boeheim leading the way, the Orange have won a national title, appeared in five Final Fours, and had five different teams ranked as the best in the nation at some point during each of their seasons.
Last year was a bit of an anomaly for Syracuse though. It was the first time since the 1981-82 season that the Orange never appeared on the Associated Press Top 25 poll at any point during the year.

However, last season’s Syracuse basketball team was still able to achieve success despite their ranking as they made it all the way to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament.

Likely a result of their run in the tournament last year, some who cover the sport believe that the Orange will be among the country’s best teams during the upcoming season.
Some like ESPN, who currently have Syracuse as the seventh-best team in the nation based on their Basketball Power Index (BPI).

Coach K jokes about R.J. Barrett’s NBA prospects (heraldonline.com; video; TSN)

Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski jokes with Canadian reporters about freshman phenom R.J. Barrett's NBA prospects.

Duke basketball: Five takeaways from the Canada tour (greensboro.com; Wilkerson-New)

Duke faced little resistance on its three-game basketball exhibition tour of Canada, wrapping things up with a 103-58 victory over McGill on Sunday in Montreal. With the start of practice less than 40 days away, here’s what we learned about the Blue Devils north of the border:

1. The Zion Effect

Zion Williamson isn’t the most highly ranked freshman on Duke’s roster, but he’ll be most responsible for the TV ratings.

A social-media phenom before he could drive, his performance in Canada only did more to add to his stardom. Williamson averaged 29.7 points and 11.3 rebounds while shooting 64 percent.

Of course, Williamson wasn’t facing the same level of competition he’ll see in the ACC, but he was able to showcase a skillset that goes far beyond highlight dunks, using his strength and athleticism to win rebounding battles while displaying the touch necessary to finish tough layups in traffic.

Williamson has already proven he’ll be appointment viewing for college hoops fans.

Virginia Picks Up A Triangle Recruit (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

We’re always intrigued with Tony Bennett’s recruits. He doesn’t necessarily go after the highest rated recruits but has a great instinct for who will fit his unique style.

Take London Perrantes for example, or Isaiah Wilkins. Or, more recently, Ty Jerome, who wasn’t expected to be a major force in college basketball but who has to be considered a Natural Born Killer.

He picks up odd big men too - Jack Salt is a muscle boy while Jay Huff came to Virginia as a twiggish 7-1 outside shooter (he’s now listed at 230).

Kadin Shedrick is closer to Huff than he is to Salt.

A Holly Springs native, he’s 6-10 and 190 so clearly it’ll take him a little while to bulk up enough to bang in the ACC.

Still, Bennett has proven that he can find guys who fit his system, so keep an eye on Shedrick and don’t be surprised if in a year or two he’s a real factor for Virginia.

Carolina basketball: Four takeaways from the Bahamas (greensboro.com; Wilkerson-New)

The North Carolina basketball team mixed in a little basketball with its Bahamas vacation, scoring two easy victories over the weekend as several players moved into new roles. Although there was no way to watch the games, stats revealed a few key points about this Carolina team:

1. Get buckets

There’s no shortage of offensive talent, with at least five players scoring in double figures in both games. Granted, StarSports was overmatched in the second game, but the Tar Heels managed to shoot 56 percent in the win over Bahamas All-Stars, including 40 of 63 on two-point attempts.

The big men were particularly impressive, with Garrison Brooks making 14 of his 16 attempts while Sterling Manley was 8-for-12 and Brandon Huffman converted 12 of 18.

That’s encouraging for the Tar Heels, given the trio of post players couldn’t find much offensive consistency last season.

2. Guard depth steps up

It’s tough to draw many conclusions given Coach Roy Williams substituted frequently. But with a small sample size, the Tar Heels should be pleased with what they got from junior guards Seventh Woods and Brandon Robinson.

Woods, a YouTube phenom in high school, put a defender on a poster with a ridiculous dunk and otherwise played well with 11 points, three rebounds and three assists against the All-Stars.

Roy Williams is back, and the rest of the college basketball world should take notice (tarheelblog.com; Guruparan)

First things first: Roy Williams has still been absurdly successful compared to the field, and even his elite contemporaries, in the years between 2013 and now. He holds a .751 winning percentage, took two trips to the NCAA Championship and another to the Sweet 16, won the ACC Tournament once and the ACC regular season twice, and only underperformed NCAA Tournament seed once. And recruiting-wise, he’s been fine. The 2014 class, of course, was legitimately great, and only made greater by the fact that UNC got a combined 11 seasons out of the three players in it. Tony Bradley was an elite recruit. UNC finished outside the top 20 once between 2013 and 2018 in recruiting rankings, and the one class that didn’t was the class that included Luke Maye and Kenny Williams. It’s safe to say they’ve outplayed that ranking.

But even with all this success, it’s clear to see that he hasn’t quite been at the level he was operating at before the NCAA investigation cast a shadow over nearly everything UNC athletics-related. A .751 winning percentage is great (it would rank just outside the top 25 for coaches’ career winning percentage), but it pales in comparison to Roy Williams’ .788 all-time record and his .771 UNC record. Most of his classes were top-20, but just one (the 2014 class) cracked the top 10. Additionally, Willliams recruited just two five-star big men to Chapel Hill, an area that should be his specialty. His record against Duke has been mediocre, he’s even lost more games to NCSU since 2013 (3) than he had in his career before that (1). And it’s fair to say that this is in large part because of the investigation, both in how it affected recruiting and the personal toll it took on the man to have his mentor’s and his program’s integrity questioned. For a man who values integrity above anything else, it’s not hard to see this weighing on him.
