Welcome to Buttered Corn Day!

There are six different kinds of maize, or corn, and one of them is sweet corn, the kind that is most often celebrated on National Buttered Corn Day. Corn was first domesticated by Indigenous peoples in southern Mexico thousands of years ago, and more corn is now produced around the world than wheat or rice, although not all of it is used for human consumption. Sweet corn is picked when the kernels are still soft, and it is cooked in many different ways. Most commonly it is boiled or steamed on a stove, roasted or grilled on a grill or in an oven, or microwaved.

Two Syracuse players among the ACC’s top returning talent in 2018-19 (ithl.com; Patrick)

The Syracuse basketball program was well represented in a recent list of the ACC’s top 10 returning players for the 2018-19 season.

With the money in the NBA being so enticing, the Syracuse basketball program has lost a number of underclassmen to the professional level over the past few years. Guys like Tyler Lydon, Malachi Richardson, and Jerami Grant all left the Orange early to pursue their dream of playing in the NBA.

Imagine how good Syracuse could have been if players like Grant, Lydon, and Richardson opted to stay in central New York for another season or two?

For the 2018-19 season, the Orange will actually have a bunch of talented guys returning to the team for a change. The majority of Syracuse’s roster that made it to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament last season is expected to be back for this year.

Two of the Orange’s players who are coming back to school are even being considered among the ACC’s top 10 returning players for the 2018-19 season.

In a recent article by Busting Brackets’ Jerran Anderson, Syracuse’s Oshae Brissett and Tyus Battle are listed as two of the conference’s top 10 performers that will be back on the court for their schools this year.

Anderson has Brissett as the ninth-best player on the list and Battle as the third-best. Having two out of the 10 players featured has to be good for the Orange, right?

Stop worrying that Syracuse basketball doesn’t have more 2019 recruits yet - The Juice Online (the juice; Irvine)

It’s that time in August when basketball recruiting news shifts from summer tournaments and evaluations to official visits and commitments. It’s also the time when Syracuse fans begin their perennial worryfest that the Orange doesn’t have enough verbal commitments for the following year’s freshman class.

Syracuse got an early start on the 2019 class. Four-star Brycen Goodine committed back on September 13, 2017. Goodine was so early he even beat two members of the 2018 class – Robert Braswell and Jalen Carey. But since then, it has been all quiet on the commitment front.

Is this normal? To provide context, I am reprising and updating an article I published back in 2016.

There are currently 131 days before the start of the calendar year in which the 2019 class will enroll at Syracuse. Since 2002, 49 percent of Syracuse’s commitments (including those that did not work out, such as Moustapha Diagne and Darius Bazley) have come later than this.

So, yes, it’s pretty normal.

Recent commitments in this time period include Kaleb Joseph (August 17), Tyler Ennis (August 16), and Buddy Boeheim (September 8). You can see where we are relative to all of SU’s commitments since 2002 in the chart below. The names at the far left of the diagram were late commits, while those at the far right were early.

Virginia adds former Liberty assistant to men's basketball staff (godandriver.com; Blum)

Kyle Getter is the Virginia men’s basketball program’s new director of recruiting and player development, the school announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Getter replaces Orlando Vandross, who held that position with the Cavaliers before being promoted to a full-time assistant following the departure of Ron Sanchez.

Getter spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Liberty under head coach Ritchie McKay, a former UVa assistant. He’s also been on Radford’s coaching staff, and prior to that, he worked at VCU for two years and was on the staff during the Rams’ Final Four run. Before that, he worked at Liberty.

See inside the new $63M Expo Center at the NYS Fair (PS; Baker)

For the first time Wednesday, fairgoers were welcomed into the new $63 million Exposition Center at the New York State Fair.

The massive event space towers over nearby buildings like the Toyota Coliseum. It's located at the western edge of the fairgrounds at the end of the midway.

Inside, visitors will find the sand sculpture that's traditionally housed in the Center of Progress building, as well as an "I Love New York" exhibit. That exhibit features selfie stations with backdrops showing scenes from throughout upstate New York.

During the fair, the Expo Center is also home to an temporary ice rink, which will feature hockey and broom ball games. When not in use, it will be open for free public skating.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo visited the fair Wednesday morning to officially open the new event center. He said the Expo Center is part of an effort to turn the fairgrounds into a year-round destination.

"It's on time. It's on budget. It works. It's going to take this whole region to a new level," Cuomo told a crowd of several hundred local and state officials.

According to the governor's office, the Expo Center is the largest indoor event space north of New York City between Boston and Cleveland.
