Welcome to Slinky Day!

The Slinky—a ubiquitous toy-box favorite for several generations of kids and adults—was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2000 and made Time’s list of the All-TIME 100 Greatest Toys in 2011. It was invented in 1943 by Richard T. James, a Penn State University graduate and U.S. Navy engineer. According to the Hall of Fame, James was designing springs to stabilize naval equipment. He knocked a spring off his desk and watched it move across the floor, almost as though it were walking. He and his wife, Betty, decided to turn the spring into a toy. She came up with the name and later ran the business. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Seventy-five years after its invention, the Slinky is still available in the original metal coil design as well as giant, plastic and 14-karat-gold-plated ($153.99) versions. Slinky Dog remains popular, too, after its notable appearance in the Toy Story movies.

Random Slinky facts from Alex Brands, which produces the toys in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania:

‒ Sales initially were slow, but after the couple held a Slinky demonstration at Gimbels department store in Philadelphia in November 1945, they sold 400 in 90 minutes for $1 each.

‒ Slinkys were utilized as mobile radio antennas during the Vietnam War.
‒ It is the Official State Toy of Pennsylvania.
‒ Each Slinky contains 80 feet of wire.
‒ NASA has taken the toy into space for zero-gravity experiments.

‒ That catchy Slinky song is the longest-running ad jingle ever.

5 SU basketball recruits to watch in 2018-19 (DO; Dabbundo)

Syracuse basketball doesn’t begin its regular season until Nov. 6 against Eastern Washington, but the next three months are critical for the future of the Orange as Jim Boeheim and his staff look to fill out the rest of the 2019 recruiting class.

Both Frank Howard and Paschal Chukwu will be seniors on the 2018-19 team, which has 10 players under scholarship, not including Buddy Boeheim, out of an allotted 13. The potential NBA status of junior Tyus Battle and rising sophomore Oshae Brissett remains in question. Should all leave, Syracuse could have to replace four or more players next season.

SU has already signed one player, Brycen Goodine, from the Class of 2019. Goodine is a 6-foot-4, 170-pound guard from St. Andrews (Rhode Island) School. Goodine is a combo guard who will likely help replace the graduating Howard and potentially NBA-bound Battle in the Orange’s backcourt in 2019. Goodine verbally committed in September 2017, prior to his junior season at St. Andrews.

He is ranked No. 69 on ESPN’s top 100 list after not being in the top 100 when he first committed. He was named the 2017-18 Gatorade Rhode Island Boys Basketball Player of the Year after his junior season and will be a favorite to win the award again as a senior.

Joe Girard III, a 6-foot-1 guard from Glens Falls (New York) High School, broke the record for the most points in New York state high school history during his junior year — he averaged 50.1 points per game that year. He plans to announce his college choice prior to basketball season.

North Carolina Basketball: 3 reasons why the Tar Heels will win ACC in 2018-19 (bustingbrackets.com; Dadson)

While everybody is in awe of both Duke and Virginia, North Carolina Basketball is probably the team with the best chance to win the ACC in 2019.

North Carolina Basketball has been overlooked in the ACC with the talent that Duke has displayed during the month of August but they may be the ACC favorite going into the start of the season.

The Tar Heels are the last team in the ACC to win the National Championship and they are returning players that were on that team.

While their starters will have young players in the lineup they have established veterans like Luke Maye and Kenny Williams that will help the young talent on the team.

North Carolina has had major success in the Roy Williams era and they keep reloading to add more talent. They have been sparked more by veteran leadership recently.

At first, the nucleus started off with the combination of Marcus Paige and JP Tokoto. That team went as far as the Regional Semifinal in 2014-15. Then it was Paige and Justin Jackson. They were able to make it to the National Championship game and they lost to Villanova.

When Joel Berry II and Justin Jackson were able to be the leaders of the team they won the National Championship in 2015-16.

5-star Vernon Carey Jr. sets visit dates with 3 ACC Schools: UNC, Duke, Miami - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

Vernon Carey Jr., one of the most coveted players in the 2019 class, sets four official visit dates. Three of those dates will intersect with the ACC; a few months from now, Carey will visit Duke, North Carolina and Miami.
  • Oct. 19: Duke
  • Oct. 25: Miami
  • Nov. 2: North Carolina
The week prior to visiting Duke, Carey will be in Lexington for Kentucky’s Big Blue Madness on Oct. 12. All of this is according to a report from Evan Daniels over at 247 Sports.

Initially, back in February, Carey took an official visit to Michigan State, too. However, under the NCAA’s new rules, the 6-foot-10 Carey — rated the No. 2 overall prospect in 2019 — could return to East Lansing.

ACC looks for boost with 2019 launch of TV channel (dailyprogress.com; AP)

When Atlantic Coast Conference teams open the season this week, their games will air on several television platforms, from ABC and Fox to ESPNU and the CBS Sports Network.

A year from now, that list will also include the ACC’s own channel.

League schools are working on production and broadcast space for the ACC Network’s launch in August 2019. The conference is mulling football and basketball scheduling that adds extra zip to first-year programming for the ESPN-partnered channel.

The short-term goal is a good start amid industry-wide concerns about falling subscriber numbers for many TV providers as cord-cutters opt for standalone services such as YouTube TV. Beyond that, the ACC needs a reliable financial boost after falling behind its power-conference peers: the Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and Southeastern conferences.

“I think there’s some other things we can do [financially], that we are looking at,” Commissioner John Swofford told The Associated Press. “But none of those things would reach the ultimate potential that the channel has.”

Swofford said it could take four or five years to reap the channel’s full financial benefits.

Member schools are counting on that money.
