Welcome to National Pepperoni Pizza Day!

Multiple surveys have shown pepperoni to be the favorite pizza topping of Americans, and over a third of the pizzas in the country are topped with it. So it comes as no surprise that there is a National Pepperoni Pizza Day.

Pepperoni takes its name from "peperoni"—with one "p"—an Italian name for a pepper. In Italy, what Americans call pepperoni is known as "salame piccante"—spicy salami. Pepperoni is a dried sausage made of a mixture of pork, beef, and spices, often including peppers. The name pepperoni began being used following World War I, primarily in Italian-American communities. At this time, pepperoni was primarily used as an appetizer, eaten on cured meat plates.

Syracuse Basketball: John Bol Ajak plans his visit with the Orange (itlh.com; Adler)

More to share on the Syracuse basketball recruiting trail, as 2019 center John Bol Ajak is heading to the Hill at the end of September.

Syracuse basketball prospects continue to set foot on the central New York campus.

The latest development surrounds John Bol Ajak, a 6-foot-10 center in the class of 2019, who will reportedly make an official visit to the Orange campus on the weekend of September 29 according to Syracuse.com’s Mike Waters.

Rated as a three-star prospect by several recruiting services, Ajak is presently a senior at the Westtown School in West Chester, Pennsylvania. According to the Syracuse.com report, he is a native of Sudan, grew up in Kenya, and came to the United States about three years ago.

Ajak holds offers from a bunch of schools, including Connecticut, George Washington, Georgetown, Pittsburgh, Seton Hall, VCU, Villanova (the defending national champions), and Wake Forest.

ACC Preview #4 - Pitt (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

To put it mildly, Kevin Stallings was never a good fit at Pitt. Even at his introductory press conference he was treated with skepticism bordering on derision.

A bit bizarrely, he reunited with Sheldon Jeter, who had transferred from Vanderbilt where he had also played for Stallings. The transfer didn’t go very well with Stallings placed restrictions on what Jeter could do. Surprisingly, Jeter was willing to play for Stallings again and even acted as a bridge between the coach and his new team. He also had Michael Young, Jamel Artis, Cameron Johnson (now at UNC), Chris Jones and Ryan Luther.

Not top-line talent but not horrible either.

Pitt finished at 16-17, played erratically and Stallings didn’t mince words when criticizing his team which didn’t go over well with fans and the media.

In fact it’s hard to point to anything that went well for Stallings at Pitt that season and his second, and final year was even worse. Far worse.

Pitt won just eight games and finished the season on a 19-game losing streak. Stallings had recruited nearly an entirely new squad - graduation and transfers decimated his first one - and this team, unlike its predecessor, didn’t really have anything like ACC-level talent.

Predicting where college basketball’s elite 5-star recruits will play (sbnation.com; O'Donnell)

Isaiah Stewart - Duke
ESPN Ranking: No. 4
Position: Center
Hometown: Rochester, New York

Stewart is the most physically developed of the elite big men in this class. He is a man-child in every sense at 6’9, 245 pounds with a 7’4 wingspan. He is the best rebounder in this class, especially on the offensive end. Even with Wiseman and Carey playing on the same circuit, it was Stewart who was named to the All EYBL First Team at center after averaging 17.6 points and 10.6 rebounds per game.

You know Duke is going to land one of the elite centers. If it’s not Carey, Stewart makes a lot of sense. The Blue Devils have recruited better than any school in America the last few years, but don’t have a commitment yet for 2019. That won’t last for long.

5-star SC guard Josiah James commits to Tennessee over Duke, Clemson - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

One of the top guards in the 2019 recruiting class is not headed to the ACC; 5-star guard Josiah James has committed to the Tennessee Volunteers.

A native of Charleston, S.C., the 6-foot-6 combo guard picked the Volunteers over Duke and Clemson, which had emerged as the favorite in recent days.

Five-star guard Josiah James just verbally committed to Tennessee. Picked the Vols over Clemson and Duke.
10:47 AM - Sep 19, 2018

This decision comes only a few days after James took an official visit to Clemson last weekend. Two weeks prior, James visited Tennessee. James was scheduled to visit Duke this weekend, but canceled that trip on Sunday (Sept. 16).

Dey's Plaza developers to build more apartments, seek more tax breaks (PS; Moriarty)

The developers of the Dey's Plaza building in downtown Syracuse are seeking tax breaks to convert vacant office space into apartments.

Robert Doucette and Richard deVito, through their company Deys Plaza LLC, have applied to the Syracuse Industrial Development Agency for $438,198 in tax exemptions for the project, which they estimate will cost $5.4 million.

The exemptions consist of $94,198 in state mortgage recording tax and $344,000 in sales taxes on construction materials.

Doucette and deVito said they plan to redevelop a portion of the second floor and entire third floor into 34 residential units (63,000 square feet feet) and renovate 7,800 square feet of commercial space.

The project is a modification of a $4.3 million project that the developers proposed in October 2017. At that time, they said they planned to convert vacant office space into 23 apartments and upgrade 28,000 square feet of office space.

Earlier in 2017, Bank of New York Mellon, the building's biggest tenant, vacated its 70,000 square feet of office space, consolidating its local operations in DeWitt.
