Welcome to The Start of Sukkot

Sukkot, a Jewish autumn festival lasting seven days in Israel and eight days in the diaspora, starts on the fifteenth day of Tishri, five days after Yom Kippur. Literally interpreted as "Feast of Booths," the holiday is significant for both agricultural and religious reasons. In the book of Exodus, it marks the end of harvest time and of the agricultural year. In the book of Leviticus, it has religious and historical significance, commemorating the Exodus of the Jews from Egypt and subsequent forty years of wandering in the desert.

Syracuse basketball target Joe Girard III passes for 5 TDs in Glens Falls' 1st loss (PS; Waters)

Joe Girard III, a highly touted basketball recruit from Glens Falls (N.Y.) High School, threw for five touchdowns on Saturday, but it wasn't enough to avoid a loss to Queensbury.

Queensbury defeated Glens Falls 48-34 on Saturday afternoon. Queensbury, which is a Class A school, remained undefeated at 4-0. Glens Falls, the state's No. 2 ranked team in Class B, fell to 3-1.

Girard, a three-year starter at quarterback for Glens Falls, completed 22 of his 40 pass attempts for a whopping 413 yards, but it wasn't enough to overcome a first-half deficit of 28-0.

Girard has received interest from colleges to play football, including scholarship offers from Tulane and UMass, but he is considered a high-major basketball recruit.

The 6-foot-2 shooting guard has narrowed his list of schools down six: Syracuse, Boston College, Notre Dame, Michigan, Penn State and Duke.

He has taken official visits to both SU and BC. He has taken unofficial visits to all six schools on his final list.

Glens Falls will play its final home game of the season next Friday when the Indians host Johnstown. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Just 1 Syracuse vegetarian restaurant ranks among Upstate NY's best (PS; Huynh)

A new ranking from NYup.com lists the 30 best vegetarian restaurants for fares like salads, BBQ tofu mac and cheese, lentil patties, tempeh burgers, and more. One restaurant is located in Syracuse.

The list uses data from Yelp.com, including number of reviews and star rating, to rank the best places to get vegetarian food in Upstate NY. Here's how Polonaise stands:

#17 Polonaise

Location: 3006 Erie Blvd., Syracuse

Rating: 5 stars out of 19 reviews

Yelp, Website

Customer comment: "Love love love this place. It's a small store/deli with one table that you can sit at. So dine in or take out and I assume most people do take out. If you dine in, the owner Adam will personally take care of you, heat up your food and randomly bring you samples to try!

Fresh simple homemade Polish food at 6.99/lb price. And amazing hot soups. The creamy mushroom soup was outstanding and I don't really love mushrooms (ooops!).

Prices for other goods like meats and cakes are very good as well. A nice rich piece of chocolate cake for $1.50!!! I cannot recommend this spot enough. Parking is plentiful "behind" the store but that really is the main entrance anyways. The addreas on Erie Blvd is technically the back of the store."
