Welcome to National Chocolate Milk Day!

National Chocolate Milk Day celebrates the chocolate sweetened milk, which can either be bought in stores, or made at home by mixing milk with either cocoa powder and a sweetener, chocolate syrup, melted chocolate, or a powdered chocolate mix. Since at least 1494, Jamaicans had been drinking a hot beverage made with cocao or cocoa—sources are not conclusive as to which one it was—which was either boiled with milk and cinnamon, or mixed with water (again, sources give different accounts of the drink). According the Natural History Museum in Britain, Sir Hans Sloane, and Irish botanist living in England, invented chocolate milk after visiting Jamaica in the 1680's and being given their drink. He didn't particular like it—he thought it was "nauseous"—and decided to add some some milk (the implication being this was cold milk and not boiled milk). He took his recipe back to England, and thus became known as the originator of chocolate milk, although some allege—without specific evidence—that Jamaicans or others may have mixed it with milk first.

Sloane's recipe was being sold as a medicinal elixir in the 1750's, and in the following century the Cadbury Brothers sold drinking chocolate that was influenced by Sloane's recipe. In 1828 the Van Houten company in Amsterdam invented a cocoa pressing method which made a chocolate powder that could be more easily dissolved in water or milk, which improved the consistency of chocolate milk.

There is a debate as to how healthy chocolate milk is. On one hand it has a high amount of sugar and is seen as being a contributor to childhood obesity, but on the other hand it is seen as being restorative to the muscles of athletes.

Syracuse Basketball Recruiting: 2019’s Akok Akok trims list, will visit SU (itlh.com; Adler)

A juicy development on the Syracuse basketball recruiting front, as 2019’s Akok Akok includes the Orange in his final five and will visit the Hill.

Akok Akok, who recently soared up the rankings in the 2019 class, has unveiled his five finalists, with the SU hoops outfit fortunately making the cut.

That’s according to a story published on Tuesday by Evan Daniels, a recruiting analyst with 247Sports. Per the report, the five programs still under consideration by Akok are Connecticut, the ‘Cuse, Georgetown, Pittsburgh and Providence.

Lots of current – and former – Big East Conference ties here.

The four-star Akok, a 6-10 power forward, attends the Putnam Science Academy in Putnam, Conn. Daniels wrote in his article that Akok has planned an official visit to the Orange campus for the weekend of Oct. 20.

Sweet!

Although his five official visits will occur this fall, Akok looks to make a collegiate decision next spring, says the Daniels piece.

Check out this evaluation by Daniels: “Over the summer, Akok raised his stock playing for Vinny Pastore’s Mass Rivals team on the Adidas circuit. [Akok] showed off versatility, mobility and impressive energy as a rebounder. He also displayed offensive potential, including the ability to stretch the floor with his jump shot.”

That sounds excellent to me. I think it’s an understatement to say that we’d love to see Akok eventually don a Syracuse uniform.

While the competition for his services is certainly legit, I feel that we have a good shot at landing Akok. At the moment, multiple recruiting insiders on the 247Sports Web site viewSU as the front-runner for Akok, but we all know how quickly things can change.

Where does Syracuse's Jim Boeheim eat in Buffalo? Hint: He likes Northern Italian. (buffalonews.com; Tsujimoto)

There are few questions the media can ask that will prompt a smile from Syracuse men's basketball head coach Jim Boeheim.

But when it comes to food, the legendary Orange leader seems to be more than willing to chat.

In an interview with Syracuse.com's Mike Waters, Boeheim revealed his favorite places to eat in the cities in which his team plays. Leaning toward steakhouses and Italian restaurants as a whole, Boeheim noted Siena, at 4516 Main St. in Amherst, as his preferred Buffalo-area dining destination.

What Boeheim may not know is his favorite Buffalo-area restaurant is in a legal battle in which Siena owners Chuck Mauro and Henry Gorino have been tangled with First Amherst Development over the purchase of the building, in which the restaurant most recently savored a victory.

Despite the outside-the-dining-room drama, Siena continues to serve its classic Northern Italian menu, which earned eight plates from News food editor Andrew Galarneau in 2014.

In 2017, the Orange reignited what was once a longstanding annual meeting between Syracuse and the University at Buffalo; the two teams squared off for the first time since 2001. SU holds a 28-5 all-time record against the Bulls, dating back to 1917, long before Boeheim was the coach.

Their Winning, Winning Ways (dukebasketballreport.com; Jacobs)

It’s probably just an oversight.

The annual ACC basketball media guide has a list of every ACC coach’s record from 1954 through the present – all games, regular-season league games and ACC Tournament action. The percentage of wins for each appears in separate columns. But, for whatever reason, coaches aren’t listed in order anywhere solely by winning percentage.

Similarly, the ACC’s postseason notes narrow the grand list of coaching records to the 15 currently active in the conference, along with all sorts of wins and losses but, again, no graphic comparison of how effective they’ve been at winning at their current post and overall.

So, as a public service, we offer the career records of the coaches active in the ACC in 2018-19, ranked by winning percentage overall and at their school.

Note that UNC’s Roy Williams has the best career rate of converting opportunities (games) into successes (victories) across his career (.787), while Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski leads in winning percentage at his present post (.765). Unsurprisingly, the home courts on which both play are named in their honor.

Every active coach except Wake’s Danny Manning, in his sixth year running a program, has a winning career mark overall. All but three holdovers are winners at their current school: Manning, BC’s Jim Christian and Georgia Tech’s Josh Pastner.

Note that coaches who’ve done notably better where they are now versus overall in their careers are Miami’s Jim Larranaga and FSU’s Leonard Hamilton.

Georgia Tech Basketball Practice Underway (ramblinwreck.com)

Georgia Tech’s basketball team began its third preseason practice under head coach Josh Pastner Tuesday afternoon, conducting the first of 30 practices the Yellow Jackets are allowed over the next 45 days leading up to the team’s Nov. 9 season opener against Lamar at McCamish Pavilion.

Pastner welcomes back six of the Yellow Jackets’ top nine players from last season, centered around a promising sophomore group that includes point guard Jose Alvarado (Brooklyn, N.Y.), wing guard Curtis Haywood II (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and forwards Evan Cole (Cumming, Ga.) and Moses Wright (Raleigh, N.C.), as well as veteran seniors Brandon Alston (Vienna, Va.) and Abdoulaye Gueye (Dakar, Senegal), and transfer guard Shembari Phillips (Atlanta, Ga.). Tech also welcomes a freshman class ranked No. 46 in the nation and includes four-star guard Michael Devoe (Orlando, Fla.) and three-star forwards Khalid Moore (New York, N.Y.) and Kristian Sjolund (Katy, Texas).

Season tickets remain available for the 2018-19 men’s home schedule, starting at $290, which is less than $15 per game. Other great benefits of purchasing season tickets include participating in an exclusive season ticket holder event with Coach Pastner and the team, priority access to purchase single-game and postseason tickets, season parking options and more.

Public events scheduled during the preseason include “Live at the Thrillerdome” on Oct. 19 at McCamish Pavilion, where both the men’s and the women’s teams will meet and greet with students and season ticket holders and officially unveil their new adidas uniforms for 2018-19. The Yellow Jackets will host Florida Tech in an exhibition game on Saturday, Nov. 3.

Over 1800 people crammed the tiny Clinton Arena ice rink Tuesday night to celebrate the CNY town's designation as Kraft Hockeyville USA 2018 and watch the Buffalo Sabres and Columbus Blue Jackets battle it out pre-season, September 25, 2018. But what did the players and coaches think of the arena, and did it transport them back to their starting years in hockey?
