Welcome to National Oatmeal Day!

National Oatmeal Day celebrates oatmeal, which is made from hulled oats called groats. The groats are heated, which gives them a nutty flavor, and then they can be milled, steel-cut, or rolled. Steel-cut oats are thinly sliced with steel blades, and rolled oats are steamed and then rolled into a flat shape. Oatmeal can be eaten uncooked and used in muesli, or it can be cooked with water and be made into a porridge. Oatmeal can also be used in other recipes, such as oatmeal cookies and granola breakfast cereals. The United States produces more oatmeal than any other country, although 93% of the crop is used for animal feed. Still, over 40 million bushels are used for human consumption each year. Quaker Oats Company is the largest oatmeal producer, and was officially formed in 1901, after the merging of various oats companies including the Quaker Mill Company. That company had created Quaker Oats in 1877, which was the first trademarked American cereal. Oatmeal is a very healthy whole grain food that lowers cholesterol and fights inflammation. It also reduces the risk of heart disease and cancer. Being that it is such a versatile food with so many benefits, it is only natural that it would have its own day!

Syracuse basketball's Joe Girard leads Glens Falls to Section II final (PS; Waters)

Syracuse basketball recruit Joe Girard III led Glens Falls to a shutout victory over Hudson Falls in the Section II semifinals on Saturday.

Girard threw for one touchdown and ran for another as Glens Falls defeated Hudson Falls 34-0 to advance to the Section II Class B final next Saturday. This is the fourth straight year that Glens Falls has played in the Section II title game.

Glens Falls (7-2) will face Cobleskill (7-2) at Shenendehowa High School at 3 p.m. on Nov. 3.

Girard, a 6-foot-2 point guard on the basketball court, also starts at quarterback for Glens Falls.

On Saturday, Girard completed 10 out of 15 pass attempts for 129 yards.

Two weeks ago Girard announced that he would play basketball at Syracuse. Lat year, he broke the New York State career scoring record. He currently has 3,306 career points. He is considered one of the top 3-point shooters in the 2019 class.

Girard picked Syracuse out of a final group of schools that also included Duke, Notre Dame, Michigan, Boston College and Penn State.

2018 Virginia Basketball Countdown: Top 5 frontcourts in the ACC (streakingthelawn.com; Darney)

...
5. North Carolina Tar Heels

Luke Maye is the favorite for ACC Player of the Year, and the senior big man brings back a double-double average to the Tar Heels. He’s not a traditional post player and can definitely shoot the three, but he’s a big body that can bang around down low if needed. Coach Williams mentioned some hesitation with not having a true back to the basket post guy established for his squad, but Maye is joined by a pair of sophomores in Garrison Brooks and Sterling Manley, along with highly touted freshman forward Nassir Little.

Manley finished second on the team in blocks last season with 24 and had a block percentage of 7.1%. Williams averaged 11.4 points per game, and had an impressive ORtg of 125.3 and an eFG% of 59.8%—both of which were best on the team. Little’s role will be interesting to see, but he’s a talented player and at 6-6, 220, he’s ready to contribute out of the gate.

4. Florida State Seminoles

The 7-4 Christ Koumadje returns for the Seminoles, as does his 9.7% block percentage. As is always the case with Leonard Hamilton’s squads, there are a lot of long, rangy guys that work well together to disrupt everything. Phil Cofer is one of my favorite returning players, and he led the Seminoles last season with 12.8 points per game. It’s a young group for the Noles with four sophomores and a freshman joining the aforementioned senior duo, but knowing Coach Hamilton, they’ll be fine.

3. Clemson Tigers

Elijah Thomas, who averaged 10.7 points and 8.1 rebounds per game last season, is one of my favorite returning big men. He’s a physical defender and shot a respectable 56% from the field last season. His defensive rebounding percentage of 25.6% is good for 36th in the nation, and his 10% block percentage is good for 24th. Not too shabby.

Thomas is joined by David Skara and Aamir Simms, both of whom were listed as “limited roles” by KenPom for last year. Simms, now a sophomore, showed real flashes last season and could be a big player for Coach Brownell and the preseason No. 22 Tigers. They also add a graduate transfer, Javan White, from Oral Roberts where he averaged over 10 points and eight rebounds a game.

2. Syracuse Orange

Oshae Brissett, Marek Dolezaj, and Pascal Chukwu all return for Coach Boeheim, and formidable doesn’t seem to be a strong enough word to describe the trio. Brissett was outstanding as a freshman, averaging 14.9 points per game and playing 38+ minutes per game. He’s a very good defensive rebounder (19.4%), and can pick off lazy passes easily. Dolezaj is an efficient shooter with an eFG% of 54.4%, but isn’t a big scoring threat with just under five points per game.

Chukwu, at 7-2, is a block machine at the rim, but committed 4.6 fouls per 40 minutes last season and can get into some trouble. Bourama Sidibe is now a sophomore and will likely see an increase on his 12.4 minutes per game from last season. He’s also a big fouling liability for the Orange though (7.6 FC/40).

What We Learned From ACC Operation Basketball (fayobserver.com; Batten)

DUKE

Another freshman sensation

Last year the Blue Devils had the nation’s best freshman in forward Marvin Bagley III, who was the ACC Player of the Year before heading off to the NBA.

This year, 6-foot-7, 285-pound Zion Williamson is the new freshman sensation for the Blue Devils.

“I think (he’s) ... the best athlete that I’ve had a chance to coach at Duke,″ coach Mike Krzyzewski said Wednesday during the ACC’s Operation Basketball.

Krzyzewski later elaborated on that comment.

“I think people are amazed, really, because they saw all the dunking,″ Krzyzewski said. “But he can defend. He’s going to be an outstanding player for us for the one year, and I think he’s going to be ... he has a chance of being even an NBA all-star.″

A boot for DeLaurier

One of the few veterans on Duke’s roster is 6-10 junior forward Javin DeLaurier. He limped into Operation Basketball on Wednesday wearing a protective boot on his left leg, treatment for a stress reaction in a foot. He’s been held out of action for about 10 days.

“The foot is good,″ he said. “It’s getting better. I’m just really trying to take my time with it and make sure it’s OK and it’s not going to be something that’s nagging.″

DeLaurier is one of three returning Blue Devils who saw significant playing time last season along with Alex O’Connell and Jack White. He averaged 3.4 points and 4.0 rebounds in 33 games.

NORTH CAROLINA

Still questions in the post

UNC spent much of the 2017-18 season employing a four-guard lineup that featured forward Luke Maye as its post player on defense. Freshmen big men Sterling Manley and Garrison Brooks played well at times, but never developed into consistent low-post scoring threats.

Cardiac Hill’s 2018-19 Pitt Basketball Preview (cardiachill.com; Whaley)

The weather’s getting colder and we’re past the halfway mark in the football season. In running this blog for about a decade now, that generally is my signal that it’s time for the shooting of the basketballs.

Basketball always (and I do mean, always) sneaks up on me. It’s a lot different from football where training camp is a much bigger deal. The start of camp gives you like a one-month warning that games are about to start. There’s no such bellwether in basketball aside from the one-off Midnight Madness events.

Pitt has its first game this week - an exhibition against your friendly neighborhood branch campus, Pitt-Johnstown. The game is on Thursday night at the Pete and, like last year, will probably draw a good deal from attention. That’s because the team once again has a lot of moving parts this year.

Those moving parts actually start from the top.

Coaching

If you’re looking for a focal point for the 2018-19 Pitt basketball team, as it was two years ago, it’s going to be the coach. More than anything, this team’s ‘story’ for this year, however it is ultimately written, is going to revolve around new head coach Jeff Capel.
