Welcome to Election Day!

In the United States, Election Day is the day set by law for the general elections of federal public officials. It is statutorily set as "the Tuesday next after the first Monday in the month of November" or "the first Tuesday after November 1.

For federal offices (President, Vice President, and United States Congress), Election Day occurs only in even-numbered years. Presidential elections are held every four years, in years divisible by four, in which electors for President and Vice President are chosen according to the method determined by each state. Elections to the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate are held every two years; all Representatives are elected to serve two-year terms and are up for election every two years, while Senators serve six-year terms, staggered so that one third of Senators are elected in any given general election. General elections in which presidential candidates are not on the ballot are referred to as midterm elections. Terms for those elected begin in January the following year; the President and Vice President are inaugurated ("sworn in") on Inauguration Day, which is usually on January 20.

Syracuse basketball vs. Eastern Washington: 10 things to watch for (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse men's basketball team opens the 2018-19 season against Eastern Washington on Tuesday night amid high expectations.

Syracuse returns all five starters from a team that advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament last year.

Leading the way for the Orange will be junior guard Tyus Battle, the leading scorer last season, and sophomore forward Oshae Brissett, who led SU in rebounding a year ago.

Eastern Washington also seems primed for a successful year. The Eagles went 20-15 in Shantay Legans' first year as head coach.

The Eagles lost Bogdan Bliznyuk, who was the Big Sky Conference's Most Valuable Player last year, but the other four starters are all back.

Game time is 7 p.m. at the Carrier Dome.

Here are 10 things to watch for as Syracuse faces Eastern Washington:

In Episode 47 of the Syracuse Sports Podcast, Syracuse.com's Brent Axe chats with Mike Waters and Donna Ditota to preview the 2018-19 Syracuse University men's basketball season. Mike, Donna and Brent discuss all the players, what they expect from the Orange this season and go over the latest recruiting news with the four players committed to the Class of 2019.

College basketball: Battle ready to lead Syracuse into highly anticipated prosperous season (watertowndailytimes; St Croix)

Syracuse University men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim embodied the mindset of Orange fans around the country when star guard Tyus Battle announced he was returning to the program for his junior season May 30.

The Hall of Fame coach, entering his 43rd year on the SU bench, said this past summer that he couldn’t recall where he was the moment that he received the welcomed news but that he felt like he was “in heaven.”

Battle’s return for the upcoming season, which begins tonight with a 7 p.m. nonconference game against Eastern Washington at the Carrier Dome as part of the 2K Classic, solidifies SU as a national contender and an experienced force to be reckoned with in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Orange is ranked No. 14 in the USA Today Preseason Coaches’ Poll and No. 16 in the Associated Press Preseason Top 25, and brings back the entire starting five from a squad that finished 23-14 overall and reached the Sweet 16 as a No. 11 seed in the NCAA Tournament last season.

2018-19 Syracuse basketball game-by-game predictions — Part I - The Juice Online (the juice; Irvine)

The Syracuse men’s basketball team will kick off its season Tuesday night. With all players returning from last year’s Sweet Sixteen run, the Orange shouldn’t be worried about the NCAA Tournament bubble for the first time since 2014.

How will the Orange fair during the regular season? Let’s examine the schedule to find out.

Eastern Washington: The Eagles came within one win of making the NCAA Tournament last year, but they graduated star Bogdan Bliznyuk. Opening night should be no problem for the Orange. Prediction: Win. Record: 1-0

Morehead St.: Like Eastern Washington, Morehead St. is also the Eagles. Unlike Eastern Washington, these Eagles only won eight games last season. Prediction: Win. Record: 2-0

Connecticut (neutral): UConn will provide the first real test for the Orange. Likewise, Syracuse will provide the first test for the Huskies new head coach, Dan Hurley, who takes over after leading Rhode Island to back-to-back NCAA appearances. UConn returns star Jalen Adams and should be better than their 14-18 record last season, during which they lost to Syracuse by 9. However, the Orange will be ready and take home the neutral court victory. Prediction: Win. Record: 3-0

Oregon (neutral): You’re getting a two-for-one here. On top of my prediction of Oregon defeating Iowa in the other bracket of the 2K Classic, Syracuse’s zone is going to contain and frustrate 7-foot-2 freshman Bol Bol and the No. 19 Ducks. Oregon looked sloppy in an exhibition win over Western Oregon, committing 19 turnovers, including 11 in the first half. The zone should only complicate that. Prediction: Win. Record: 4-0

Syracuse Basketball Predictions: Can the Orange win the national title? (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

The staff here at Inside The Loud House has their predictions for the Syracuse basketball team and their chance at success during the upcoming season.

Other than the actual team and a handful of fans, almost no one saw it coming when the Syracuse basketball team made it all the way to the Sweet 16 round of last season’s NCAA Tournament.

But they did and the majority of the players that helped them get there are back for the 2018-19 season to help the Orange get even farther into the NCAA Tournament.

Hitting the floor again for Syracuse this season will be senior guard Frank Howard, sophomore forward Oshae Brissett, and junior guard Tyus Battle. This group of players all ranked among the Orange’s top three scorers in 2017-18.

Combine these three with some key reserves like sophomores Howard Washington and Marek Dolezaj and newcomers like freshman Buddy Boeheim and junior transfer Elijah Hughes and this season’s Syracuse squad has the opportunity to make some serious moves this season.

Basketball Season Preview: 16th Ranked Syracuse Looks to Build on Last Season's Playoff Run (waer.org; Shulman)

The last team in. March 11, 2018, Syracuse basketball fans are biting their fingernails as they anxiously wait to hear if they have been selected to play in March Madness. It was a disappointing regular season for the Orange that had seen them go 8-10 in ACC play. After losing to North Carolina in the second round of the ACC tournament, playoff hopes are dwindling. The selections are moving at the speed of molasses, only heightening the nerves of players, coaches, and fans. Moving through the teams alphabetically they finally get to the S’s, and there it is. That big orange S in all its glory. Syracuse has made the tournament once again.

Last season was filled with up and downs as the Orange played an underwhelming regular season followed by an electrifying Sweet Sixteen run. It was a Cinderella story performance for Syracuse in the tournament. This year, however, the Orange are not looking for a fairy tale. There are large expectations for the men’s basketball team, and a buzz around campus that hasn’t existed since the 2015-16 Final Four appearance.

Syracuse’s roster is much improved from last season, and they look to be one of the ACC’s top teams. The conference is looking tough this year. Seven teams—Syracuse included—made the preseason top 25 with four other ACC teams getting votes. So how does Syracuse manage to be successful in the country’s best basketball conference? The first thing you’ll hear when someone mentions the Orange is that they have all five starters returning to the lineup this season. After peering into the professional world, Shooting Guard Tyus Battle and Forward Oshae Brissett opted to give it another year before entering the draft. The return of both players has set up Syracuse with one of the deepest lineups that they have had in years.

It's snow time, folks: Upstate NY likely to get lake effect snow (PS; Coin)

The season's first real lake effect snowfall is likely to arrive this weekend in Upstate New York.

"There remains high confidence that accumulating lake snows can be expected in the snow belts east of" lakes Erie and Ontario, the National Weather Service said today. The snow could reach down into Central New York if the winds shift to the northwest, the weather service said.

There's even a chance for an extended, heavy lake effect snowstorm that would dump a foot or more of snow east of the lakes and bringing lighter snows to the south. The heaviest snow is expected in Tug Hill and the hills south of Buffalo.

"If I had to throw some numbers out, I'd say 6 to 12 inches in the good spots," said Tom Kines, a meteorologist with Accuweather.

The weather service said snow could fall Friday night through Saturday afternoon as the coldest air of the year so far sweeps across the Great Lakes.

"Such an air mass would easily be plenty cold enough to support areas of lake effect snow downwind of the lakes through Saturday," the weather service said. Snow would taper off Sunday as drier air moves in and the winds shift.
