Syracuse played its first game at Madison Square Garden in 1939. Syracuse has a record of 95-77 at the Garden. In addition to regular-season games, Syracuse has played in the Big East Tournament, the NCAA Tournament and the National Invitation Tournament at the Garden. In both the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons, Syracuse went 6-1 at MSG. Here is a look at some memorable games in Syracuse's history at Madison Square Garden: 1939: Syracuse's first game ever at the Garden Syracuse University archives 1939: Syracuse's first game ever at the Garden Syracuse played its first game at Madison Square Garden on Feb. 1, 1939. This was the old Garden, which was located on Eighth Avenue between 49th and 50th streets. That's about 18 blocks north of the current location. The game was against Manhattan. Syracuse won 42-31. A crowd of 12,300 attended the game, including Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of the game. The 1939 Syracuse team was known as the S-Men. They included (L-R) Wilmeth Sidat-Singh (far left), Robert Stewart, Ed Sonderman, John Schroeder and Johnny Simonaitis. He had a chance to complete a three-point play he didn’t think was possible. With about 4:21 left before halftime, the Virginia guard wheeled around a screen set by forward Mamadi Diakite, attacking the paint dribbling with his left hand. Rising and sneaking the ball between a pair of George Washington defenders, Guy released the ball with his left hand, his momentum carrying him toward the baseline. He didn’t see the ball fall through the netting. But he did hear John Paul Jones Arena erupt. “I definitely didn’t think it was even going to hit the rim,” Guy said. “It went in, and everyone went wild, I was like, ‘It really went in?’ The basketball gods were in my favor for that shot.” ... Thanks to lake effect snow from the Great Lakes, Upstate New York and Michigan's Upper Peninsula could see close to a foot of snow in isolated areas through 7 p.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. Most areas over the 2,300-mile swath of snowfall will get an inch or two. That long stretch of snow is caused by cold polar air dipping as far south as Texas and bumping into a warmer air mass that's pulling in moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. "What you're looking at here is the boundary zone of warm air moving north from the Gulf and cold air moving south from Canada," said Mark Wysocki, New York state climatologist. "You can see how that boundary stretches from the southern plains to the Great Lakes." Another system, a coastal storm that is moving along the East Coast today, will interact with that boundary of cold and warm air. As that coastal storm moves off Cape Cod Tuesday night, it will pull cold air across the Great Lakes, generating lake effect snow in Michigan and New York. ...
