Welcome to National Bundt Day!

National Bundt Day, also known as National Bundt Cake Day is observed every year on November 15. As people across the United States are planning their menu for the upcoming holidays, a bundt cake is sure to be on the list at least once.

A bundt cake can be any cake baked in a Bundt pan, forming it into a distinctive ring shape. The mold of the Bundt pan was originally inspired by the traditional European fruit cake known as Gugelhupf. It was in the 1950s and 1960s that cookware Nordic Ware popularized the style for the mold design and trademarked the name Bundt. Nordic Ware started producing Bundt pans made from cast aluminum. Similar pans are sold as “fluted tube pans” or other similar names.

SU News

https://nypost.com/2018/11/14/why-danny-hurley-calls-matchup-versus-jim-boeheim-surreal/ (nypost.com; Kussoy)

Dan Hurley hadn’t yet hit puberty when Jim Boeheim first walked into his Jersey City home. Then, Hurley was a teenager, watching the Syracuse coach visit his high school, St. Anthony’s in Jersey City. Then, he was a Seton Hall guard, trying to split the Orange’s 2-3 zone. Then, he was coach of St. Benedict’s, speaking to Boeheim about recruits, like his father, Bob, long did.

On Thursday night, Hurley and Boeheim will be standing on the same sideline, helping write the latest verse of the Syracuse-UConn rivalry at Madison Square Garden.

“It’s definitely a surreal experience. He did home visits in my living room when I was like 10 years old, and now I’m coaching against him in the Garden,” Hurley said. “I’m gonna savor it. I’m gonna enjoy it. Obviously I’m gonna be locked in on the game, but I’m gonna take it all in, because it’s part of my journey and I appreciate that.”

In the 94th meeting between the former Big East powers, the No. 15 Orange (2-0) and the Huskies (2-0) face off in Manhattan for the third straight season, followed by the 2K Classic nightcap pitting No. 13 Oregon (2-0) against Iowa (2-0).

Syracuse basketball vs. Connecticut: 10 things to watch for (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange will meet former Big East rival Connecticut at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night.

The game part of the 2K Empire Classic doubleheader. The second game features Oregon versus Iowa. The SU-UConn game will start at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.

Syracuse is 2-0 and ranked No. 15 in this week's Associated Press poll. Connecticut is also 2-0.

This will be the fourth meeting between Syracuse and Connecticut since both schools left the Big East following the 2012-13 season.

Syracuse beat UConn in the semifinals of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in 2015-16. Two years ago, Connecticut knocked off Syracuse at Madison Square Garden. And last year, Syracuse beat the Huskies 72-63 in the Jimmy V Classic at the Garden.

Here are 10 things to watch for in Thursday night's game:
...

Syracuse searches for a ‘quarterback’ on 1st road trip (DO; DiSturco)

Recently, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim keeps circling back to one thing: The Orange doesn’t have a “quarterback.”

SU’s first road trip of the season will likely be without an experienced floor general, which Boeheim said is as important as a football team’s signal-caller. Without one, a team cannot reach its potential.

“We’re good enough to win these games,” Boeheim said. “But this isn’t basketball, what we’re doing right now.”

Against Eastern Washington, the lack of a point guard resulted in offensive struggles and less ball movement — SU had as many assists as the Eagles (11), despite EWU only having 13 baskets to the Orange’s 24. And against Morehead State, turnovers plagued SU at times, and the offense was unable to break defensive pressure.

For the majority of offensive possessions this season, junior Tyus Battle has run the point because Syracuse’s usual starter, Frank Howard, is still sidelined with an injury. His timetable is unclear and is a game-time decision for Thursday’s matchup against Connecticut (2-0), SU director of athletic communications Pete Moore confirmed. Meanwhile, the No. 15 Orange’s (2-0) backup freshman point guard Jalen Carey has yet to fully recover from a left ankle sprain he sustained a month ago.

Syracuse Fans Must be Patient with Freshmen – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Shults)

All offseason, Syracuse fans have become increasingly excited about the potential of Jalen Carey and Buddy Boeheim. Two games into their respective careers, the freshmen have shown flashes of potential. However, they have also made mistakes common among young players.

While Carey sat out preseason play due to injury, Boeheim was one of Syracuse’s top scorers against Saint Rose and Le Moyne. Obviously those games were warm-ups for the Orange but it was encouraging to see Boeheim shoot the three-ball well. However, he hasn’t been the same player in the regular season as he’s scored just six points in the first two games while shooting 2-18 from the field.

The absence of Frank Howard due to injury has pushed Boeheim into a starting role that he’s not ready for. Boeheim may have grown up learning the 2-3 zone, but that doesn’t change the learning curve of playing against D-1 competition. Like most freshmen, he has to get stronger and gain confidence in his shot. Even though he’s 1-10 from three in the first two games, he showed his range in exhibition play where he shot fifty percent from deep. Clearly he has the ability. The next step is to gain confidence in making those shots in games that count.

Men’s Basketball: UConn heads back to MSG to take on Syracuse (dailycampus.com; Sheehan)

...
Projected Starting Lineups: UConn (2-0) vs. Syracuse (2-0)

G: Jalen Adams vs. Tyus Battle

This matchup features two of the most dynamic guards in the country. Battle led the Orange in scoring against Morehead State on Nov. 10, shooting 7-for-15 from the floor in 39 minutes, and Adams tallied 20 points in UConn’s most recent game on Nov. 11, shooting 7-for-10 from the floor in 20 minutes of play. Adams will have a challenge guarding Battle, who is quick and crafty in the paint, and Adams will get to test the new fast-paced UConn offense against the Syracuse zone.

G: Alterique Gilbert vs. Buddy Boeheim

The son of Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim, Buddy has started the first two games as a freshman, netting three points in each start. He played 27 minutes in their home opener and 25 minutes against Morehead State. Gilbert has arguably been UConn’s best player in the young season, showing consistency and hustle on both ends of the ball; he’s scored double-digit points in his first two games and doesn’t even look like he’s had shoulder surgery three years in a row.

G/F: Christian Vital vs. Elijah Hughes

Vital has been atrocious from the floor in the first two games, but he leads the team in rebounding and is one of the most energetic players on the floor at any time. Hughes recently dropped 21 on Morehead State and it will be a treat to watch the physicality this matchup will bring. Vital historically plays well at the Garden; he scored 17 points last year and two years ago, he hit two free throws with 2.2 seconds to go to elevate the Huskies to a 52-50 victory.

Syracuse vs. UConn: Key storylines to watch in the 2K Classic matchup (bustingbrackets.com; Harkins)

In the 2K Classic, two former Big East powerhouses will meet to renew a fierce rivalry. Will Syracuse or UConn reign supreme in this matchup?

Even though UConn and Syracuse are no longer battling it out in Big East conference play, the two rivals have met in each of the past three (this will be the fourth straight) non-conference schedules. One of the fiercest battles of top-tier programs in the nation, this is a highly-anticipated matchup every single year. And while Syracuse has won eight of the last 11 matchups, it is never a good idea to count out UConn.

In regards to this coming matchup, the two famed programs are meeting at Madison Square Garden, the home of their sensational six-overtime game in the 2009 Big East Tournament. This matchup comes as part of the 2K Empire Classic, one of the first true non-conference events of the year. With the new season still in its infancy, there might not be better matchup to jumpstart the emotions of two incredibly storied programs.

So far, both UConn and Syracuse boast 2-0 records and have shown no real signs of struggle. For both teams, though, this will be the first true test on the court. With this said, though, the Orange should be the clear favorite in this one as the No. 15 ranked team in the nation. Still, it is never a good idea to doubt UConn head coach Dan Hurley, who is one of the best rising stars on the sidelines.

Syracuse game a measuring stick for UConn basketball (theday.com; Keefe)

It will never be just another game on the UConn basketball schedule.

There's too much storied history, intensity and passion in the rivalry with Syracuse for a regular season meeting at Madison Square Garden, the World's Most Famous Arena, to be considering anything but a special occasion.

The two former Big East competitors meet on Thursday (7 p.m., ESPN2) in the semifinals of 2K Empire Classic, benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project. No. 13 Oregon and Iowa play in the second game of the doubleheader. The consolation and championship games are Friday.

"I think it's going to be a big-time game," graduate transfer Tarin Smith said. "If you're a competitor, this is the type of game that you want. You don't go into the game saying it's just like any other game. It's UConn versus Syracuse. There's definitely a little more importance to it."

The 95th meeting in the series is especially meaningful to the Huskies, who are eager to prove themselves against a ranked team. They're trying to climb out of the shadows and into the national spotlight. And beating No. 15 Syracuse (2-0) would garner them some attention and end a 15-game losing to top 25 programs.

The Huskies showed signs of progress while winning their first two regular season games against weaker foes. But they'll have to be even better and play even harder to upset Syracuse, which is returning all five starters from a NCAA Sweet 16 team.

"We can't afford many lulls in this game," coach Dan Hurley said. "We've got to be locked in for 40 minutes if we want to have a chance late in the game."

The best modern football teams from 'basketball schools' (SI; Brief)

They’ve been to 23 combined Final Fours, including seven in the past 15 seasons. The last time they both missed the same NCAA tournament was back in 1967, and they enter the new year in the top six for all-time wins among Division I college basketball programs. But on the football field, they’re an afterthought—at least, they usually are.

Kentucky and Syracuse are no strangers to success on the hardwood, and their fans are no strangers to spending each fall eagerly anticipating another season of hoops. But this year, you’ll have to forgive Wildcats and Orange fans if they’ve been a bit distracted. In the latest College Football Playoff rankings, Kentucky and Syracuse sit at No. 17 and 12, respectively, sporting a combined 15–5 record.

The 7–3 Wildcats, powered by running back Benny Snell Jr. and edge rusher Josh Allen, boast the 11th-best scoring defense in America. Despite a punchless loss to Tennessee in Week 11, they are still on track for one of their best seasons ever with two winnable games ahead against Middle Tennessee and Louisville.

National Signing Day: New Bedford's Brycen Goodine signs to play at Syracuse (southcoasttoday.com; Kurie)

Brycen Goodine was surrounded by several dozen family, friends and well-wishers on Wednesday evening, but none had more meaning in the moment than Grandma Grace.

As a young kid dreaming of Division I basketball, Goodine would visit his grandmother’s house, and more often than not she’d be watching a Syrcause men’s basketball game. She passed away two years before Goodine signed his National Letter of Intent to play for coach Jim Boeheim and the Orangemen, but as he put pen to paper, Goodine made sure a framed photo of his grandmother was inches away.

“She would always smile when they won,” he recalled, sweat still dripping from his brow after a preseason practice. “She would be happy. I used to think ‘What if I went there? That would be cool.’ She loved them. That was her favorite team.”

The 6-foot-4 Goodine verbally committed to Syracuse in the fall of 2017 after a campus visit in Barrington from Boeheim and former Orange star Gerry McNamara, who led his recruiting push. He took his official visit on Oct. 20 and on Wednesday set things in stone.

“It felt good when I verbally committed, but now I’m excited that all the hard work I put in my whole life led here,” he said. “It’s not really done. It’s just getting started. I have to turn it up even more.”

That’s always been Goodine’s attitude, from when he was playing at the Boys and Girls Club in New Bedford, to CYO hoops with Mt. Carmel to two seasons at Bishop Stang, including leading the Spartans to the 2016 state championship while averaging 18.5 points a game as a sophomore.

UConn Men’s Basketball vs. Syracuse: Q&A With Nunes Magician (theuconnblog.com; Connolly)

On Thursday night, UConn men’s basketball will face off against their former Big East rival Syracuse for the first time under head coach Dan Hurley. The Orange enter the game ranked No. 15 in the AP Top 25. The Huskies, meanwhile, are still a bit of mystery through two games.

We talked to James Szuba of Nunes Magician to get the inside scoop on Syracuse from the people that know the team best.

What are Syracuse fans’ perceptions of UConn, especially with Dan Hurley now in charge?

Generally speaking, I think the Syracuse fan base objectively has respect UConn basketball and everything it stood for under Jim Calhoun. But now it’s probably viewed as a program with its best days behind it and unfortunately for UConn, being in the AAC isn’t the same as having a power-5 conference affiliation. Hurley is a great hire and we’ll be interested in seeing how he pans out.

This is arguably the biggest game on the schedule for UConn fans. Do Syracuse fans treat it the same way?

It’s still a pretty big game for Syracuse but we would be lying if it was treated the same as the UConn-Syracuse rivalry in the early 2000’s. For the non-conference though, this is amongst the best games and from a media perspective it makes sense to play a game like this, especially in New York at MSG. It’s good for the fan base, it’s good for visibility, it’s good for recruiting and for the sport of college basketball too. We’ll see if it continues once the ACC goes to 20 league games.

Syracuse Basketball: Predictions for contest vs. UConn (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

The Syracuse basketball team makes their annual trip to Madison Square Garden. They’ll play an old Big East Foe in the UConn Huskies.

Does anyone remember that magical Matthew Moyer 18 point and eight board performance out of nowhere vs UConn last season? No? Okay then. But in all seriousness that was a crazy game last season and now the Orange can get a winning streak going vs the Huskies for the first time in the last five years.

This is a huge step up in competition for all involved and the biggest storyline for the Orange is the point guard situation. Will Frank Howard play? He’s questionable for the contest, which is slightly positive news from the things we had been hearing on the subject.

This Orange team hasn’t looked like themselves with Tyus Battle operating the point, no offense to Tyus, it just isn’t his natural position. The defense has been hot and cold, mostly hot, and we’ll see if that’s the tell tale for this contest against a hot UConn offense.

College basketball: Syracuse-UConn, Ohio State-Creighton among Andy Katz's top games this weekend | NCAA.com (ncaa.com; Katz)

Major non-conference tournaments begin next Monday with the Maui Invitational. But there are still some critical games over the next few days where teams will look back at the results come March.

Here are my top five games to watch this weekend (Thursday-Sunday):

1. Syracuse vs. UConn, Thursday, 2K Classic, MSG, NYC, 7 p.m., ESPN2: This could end up being a season-changing game for the Huskies. Dan Hurley doesn’t need to convince the UConn faithful that he’s the right person for the job. But getting a win over a longtime rival would do wonders to help with a number of impressions.

The Huskies may not be ready for primetime yet, but they have already created a bit of a buzz early in the season. Syracuse isn’t 100 percent healthy yet on the perimeter, and that’s where the Huskies have shown strength. The atmosphere should be great at the Garden, as it always is when these two teams meet. Syracuse is a national title contender once it gets healthy. The unheralded Oshae Brissett is off to a sensational start, averaging 18 points and 10 boards a game.

2. Oregon vs. Iowa, Thursday, 2K Classic, MSG, NYC, 9:15 p.m., ESPN2: The nation will get a chance to see Bol Bol on full display Thursday night. Bol is off to a stunning start with 17.5 points and 12 boards a game. But don’t dismiss the star power of Payton Pritchard. He’s a steady scorer, who can run a stable floor game. The Hawkeyes have the goods to be an NCAA tournament team. But they must defend. Giving up 82 points to Green Bay isn’t going to cut it. They’ve got to cut that number down. The good news is this team can score as Luka Garza and Tyler Cook both put up 17 in a win over the Phoenix. Iowa needs to come out of this tournament at least 1-1 to create some momentum.

Men’s basketball gameday: UConn vs. Syracuse (nhregister.com)

KEEP AN EYE ON

Oh zone, baby!: Any conversation about playing Syracuse begins and ends with the Orange’s vaunted, 2-3 zone. As usual, it’s long and active, holding its first two opponents to 31.8-percent shooting. It’s something UConn simply can’t replicate in practice.

“This early in the season, to see a zone of that caliber is going to be a challenge,” UConn coach Dan Hurley said. “The last couple of high-level teams not named Duke that played against that zone weren’t that effective against it — Michigan State, TCU, Arizona State.”

The keys to beating it are the same as always.

“We’re gonna have to make 3s,” Hurley said. “We don’t have a dominant big that we’re gonna be able to go high-low to, consistently. We’re gonna have to make 3s. We just don’t want to be playing offense around that 3-point line. We’re gonna have to gap the zone with the dribble. The strength of their zone is their length and size. We’re just hoping our small guards can find those cracks with the dribble, land in the paint and spray the ball around a little bit. We still want to shoot inside/out 3s, we just don’t want to shoot ball-reversal, ball-reversal, six on the shot clock, jack up a 3. We’re gonna have to find a balance, getting it to the high post, getting it to the short corner, gaps in the zone.”

Beating the zone down the floor will work, too. The Huskies are averaging 23.5 fast-break points over their first two contests.

ACC Schools Post Another Strong GSR Showing (theacc.com)

The Atlantic Coast Conference’s presence in the forefront of academic success was demonstrated once again in the latest NCAA Graduation Success Rates (GSR) Report released Wednesday.

ACC institutions again topped the rankings among their peer conferences with an average graduation rate of 91 percent, equaling the collective GSR report of one year ago.

Key notes for the ACC in comparison to peer conferences:

The ACC led all conferences with 12 member institutions achieving total department GSR scores higher than the national average.

Ten ACC teams achieved GSR scores of 100 in the sports of football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and baseball.

Ten ACC football teams earned higher than the FBS football GSR average, second-most among Power 5 Conferences.

In the sport of football, the ACC remains the only conference to have multiple teams register GSR scores of 90 or higher every year since 2005. Duke (96) and Virginia Tech (90) reached that plateau this year.

Eight ACC men’s basketball teams earned higher than the Division I basketball GSR average, tying for second-most among Power 5 leagues. Clemson, Duke, Notre Dame and Pitt posted GSR scores of 100.

Eleven ACC women’s basketball teams earned higher than the Division I women’s basketball GSR average, second-most among Power 5 conferences.

This marks the 11th straight year that the ACC has had at least four women’s basketball programs score 100, making it the only peer conference to do so. Five ACC teams – Florida State, Pitt, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest – hit the century mark in the latest report.

Nine ACC baseball teams earned higher than the Division I GSR baseball average, tying for the most among Power 5 conferences. Clemson registered a 100 GSR.

ACC Roundup - Not A Glorious Night For The Conference (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

We blame Georgia Tech.

The ACC was undefeated until the Yellow Jackets lost at Tennessee Wednesday and Thursday the gates of athletic Hell opened wide and swallowed most of the ACC as only Duke and Clemson - and the Tigers not by that much - won.

BC and Notre Dame embarrassed themselves and the conference, losing to IUPUI and Radford, respectively.

And in Notre Dame’s case, consider this: Radford played without Carlik Jones, who won the Big South tournament on a clutch shot last year.

That’s not supposed to happen to ACC schools, at least not very often and certainly not as the season is just in tune up stage.

Caleb Tanner hit six threes and finished with 20 for the Highlanders.

Quick Recap: Notre Dame Men’s Basketball Falls to Radford 63 to 60 (onefootdown.com; Rick)

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s basketball team dropped its first game of the 2018-2019 season tonight, losing to the Radford Highlanders 63 to 60.

Radford was an NCAA Tournament team a year ago, managing to win a play-in game before losing to the Villanova Wildcats in the round of 64. They returned three starters from that squad, and that veteran experience and talent showed in this one — the Highlanders trailed by just 6 at the half, and asserted themselves in the second half, wrestling the lead away from the young, struggling Irish and doing just enough to hang onto that lead down the stretch.

Much of that can be attributed to Radford G Caleb Tanner, who hit 4-of-6 three pointers in the first half and finished the game with 20 points (6-of-9 from deep). Ed Polite Jr. added 16 points and 11 rebounds to give the Highlanders a boost down low, and Travis Fields Jr. chipped in 11 points.

The Irish had a hot shooter of their own — John Mooney, who managed to one-up two-up Tanner in the first half by hitting 6 of the 8 deep balls he launched. Mooney led the Irish for the game with a career-high 24 points (6-of-9 from deep) and 12 rebounds, and got some help from T.J. Gibbs (11 points), but not much help came from anyone else as ND struggled on offense to find any sort of rhythm or offensive flow, even going a few substantial stretches without scoring.

The Irish shot 36% from the field and 31% from deep for the game, while Radford shot 42% and 38% from the field and from 3, respectively.

The Irish will continue their home-stand to begin the season by playing the William & Mary Tribe this Saturday at Purcell Pavilion at 12 PM ET.

Winter storm warning in Upstate NY; 10 inches of wet snow could fall (PS; Coin)

A winter storm warning has been issued for much of Upstate New York today and Friday as a coastal storm is expected to bring heavy, wet snow.

The heaviest snow is expected at higher elevations: 10 inches could fall on Tug Hill and in the Adirondacks and hills of the Southern Tier. Syracuse and Binghamton could get 8 inches as the heaviest band of snow tracks from south to north in the midsection of Upstate.

Forecasters are concerned about potential power outages as wet snow and freezing rain weigh down tree branches, many of which still have leaves that will increase the surface area for precipitation to stick to.
