Throw-Out-Your-Leftovers-Day.jpg

Welcome to Throw Out Your Leftovers Day!

Depending on the year, Thanksgiving Day may have been days ago, and today is the day when leftovers are to be thrown out. After about three or four days, the chance of bacteria growing on food greatly increases, which can lead to food poisoning. Food may look fine, but bacteria is sneaky, and you may not even see or taste that it's there. Hopefully since Thanksgiving you have been properly caring for and reheating your food. As a general rule, never leave food out for more than two hours at room temperature, because bacteria can begin growing on it. If it is above 90 degrees, don't let the food sit out for more than an hour. When reheating leftovers, make sure to use something that will get its temperature up to 165 degrees, such as a stove, oven, or microwave; don't use a slow cooker or chafing dish.

Syracuse basketball defeats Ohio State 72-62: Brent Axe recap (PS; Axe)

It's not even December yet, but Wednesday night's 72-62 win for the Syracuse University men's basketball team over Ohio State feels like it will have an impact on March.

Syracuse wouldn't have completely sunk its battleship had it lost to the Buckeyes, but the boat surely would have started taking on water.

As syracuse.com's Mike Waters pointed out earlier this week, Syracuse has suffered three non-conference losses just six times in the last 27 years. In five of those years, Syracuse didn't go to the NCAA tournament.

Why tempt fate? Take care of the Buckeyes and a solid road win over the No. 1 team in the NCAA's NET rankings and the No. 16 team in the polls would be yours.

The Orange have to keep taking care of business in non-conference play and in the ACC, but for now there is a big difference between a 4-2 record and one that reads 3-3.

Wednesday's win not only provided a solid NCAA Tournament resume builder, it saw the Orange wake up from behind the three-point line and on defense.

Syracuse also had to overcome one of the worst officiated games in recent memory to grab the 10-point win.

Men’s Basketball: No. 16 Ohio State suffers first loss of season to Syracuse 72-62 (thelantern.com; Gay)

No. 16 Ohio State knew what it was in for when facing Syracuse: a 2-3 zone defense, a staple for Jim Boeheim, who is in his 43rd season as the head coach of the Orange.

Syracuse knew what the zone was going to make Ohio State do: forcing them to shoot over the zone defense instead of driving to the paint, having sophomore forward Kaleb Wesson use his size to outmatch opponents.

This was what Syracuse forced Ohio State to do.

It worked, with No. 16 Ohio State (6-1) suffering its first loss of the season, falling to Syracuse (4-2) 72-62 on Wednesday night.

Wesson struggled mightily in the paint for the Buckeyes. The sophomore connected on one of eight shot attempts from the floor, getting second chance opportunities with five offensive boards, but finding little success offensively, overpowered by the three big Orange forwards in the middle. He ended the game with 13 points, connecting on 11 of 14 from the charity stripe.

Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann said Wesson’s performance was a learning experience for the sophomore, overcoming his inability to finish on Tuesday, something the head coach said he had been working on.

“I doubt he’s had, maybe no one-for-eight nights in his career even dating back to high school I would think,” Holtmann said. “I think he did a really good job in the high post passing the ball and I thought he got the ball around the rim and the teammates got the ball to him in good spaces. He created a lot of fouls. But his finishing in traffic is something we have been working with him on and we just need to continue to work with him on it.”

Redshirt junior Elijah Hughes secured the victory for the Orange, scoring six consecutive points, leading Syracuse on a 11-0 run. During this span, the Buckeyes went more than seven minutes without a field goal.

Ohio State Suffers First Loss Of The Season, Falling 72-62 To Syracuse (elevenwarriors.com; Hass-Hill)

Chris Holtmann's magic came to an end Wednesday night.

After winning six games in a row to begin the season, including a pair of road victories against Cincinnati and Creighton, No. 16 Ohio State couldn't handle Syracuse and suffered its first defeat. The Orange beat the Buckeyes, 72-62, Wednesday at the Schottenstein Center.

Ohio State jumped out to an early lead on Syracuse and maintained the advantage until the Orange grabbed its first lead of the game with five minutes remaining in the first half. Both teams traded the lead before Syracuse re-gained the advantage and began extending it early in the second half.

The Orange continued to extend the lead and made it a double-digit advantage with 8:58 remaining in the game. Ohio State cut the lead to six points when Jackson hit a pair of free throws with 2:56 remaining, but layups from Tyus Battle and Elijah Hughes quickly gave Syracuse a double-digit lead, once again.

Battle had 20 points and Hughes added 18 points. Oshae Brissett had 14 points

C.J. Jackson and Kaleb Wesson struggled to both find open looks and knock down shots. They combined to make 5-of-22 shots from the field and 2-of-9 3-pointers. Wesson and Jackson each did damage from the foul line, though, and hit a combined 20-of-26 free throws.

Ohio State: Three Points as Buckeyes drop first game, fall to Syracuse (lettermennow.com; Brice)

Too many misses. Too many fouls. Too much of everything that Ohio State had not been through its first six games.

And now the 16th-ranked Buckeyes are no longer undefeated. Erratic shooting and inconsistent defense left Ohio State a 72-62 loser at home to the unranked Orange on Wednesday night, who got a combined 52 points from Tyus Battle, Oshae Brissett and Frank Howard.

The postgame coverage at Lettermen Row for the first defeat of the season for the Buckeyes starts with Three Points.

1. Too many droughts for Buckeyes

Even as it constructed a consistent first-half lead, Ohio State got itself in trouble repeatedly as it was lulled into rushed shots, contested shots, hurried and errant passes and more by the Syracuse defense. The result saw Ohio State hit seven of its first 14 field goal attempts and then just five of the next 23 as Syracuse unfurled an 11-0, second-half run to seize control of the contest.

The Buckeyes were just 3-for-15 across the first 12 minutes of the second half but made enough trips to the foul line to even briefly lead, 45-44, before the Orange run.

Ohio State also continued its recent slide behind the 3-point line, where it connected on four early attempts against Syracuse but finished the game just 6-for-22 from distance.

Syracuse stops No. 16 Ohio State 72-62 :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsportsfan.com; Kraft (AP)

Syracuse found its outside shot, and just in time if you ask coach Jim Boeheim.

Tyus Battle scored 20 points, Elijah Hughes added 18 and the Orange shot nearly 46 percent from beyond the arc as Syracuse upset No. 16 Ohio State 72-62 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Wednesday night.

It was Syracuse's second straight victory, as they improved to 4-2 on the season.

C.J. Jackson had 19 points for Ohio State, and Kaleb Wesson contributed 13 — 11 of them from the foul line — as the Buckeyes (6-1) lost for the first time this season.

"For the first time this year I've seen us play like we need to play," Boeheim said. "That's a pretty good sign."

Much of the game was a battle of fouls and foul shots, as the Orange finished with nearly as many personal fouls (28) as it did rebounds (29), with Bourama Sidibe, Frank Howard and Marek Dolezaj all fouling out.

But an 11-0 Orange run over 3:24 in the second half put the game away.
