The calm of 2018 Early Signing Period eve cloaks a freneticism that steps into the daylight on Wednesday morning. The texting, calling and last-minute pitches lead to signing day surprises, press conference drama and secret pacts. This is a gift usually reserved for February, but now we have two signing periods and twice the excitement.
The early signing period begins at 7 a.m. ET Wednesday across the country and extends through Friday, Dec. 21. However, most of the activity is expected to take place Wednesday.

Believe it, UB fans: No. 14-ranked Bulls show their mettle by beating Syracuse (buffalonews.com; Gaughan)
Pinch yourself, University at Buffalo fans, and read these quotes from Jim Boeheim:
“I thought they were tougher than us the last 10 minutes, especially.”
“They’re faster, quicker, I think they’re stronger.”
Those were the admissions from the second-winningest coach in college basketball history after his Orange lost to the Bulls, 71-59.
As the crowd of 18,620 filed out of the Carrier Dome, a euphoric UB fan shouted to the roof: “In your wildest dreams, did you ever think you’d see this?”
Believe it.
The win improved the 14th-ranked Bulls to 11-0 and gave UB another big credit on its NCAA Tournament resume, should it not win the Mid-American Conference. The Bulls already have a win over then-13th-ranked West Virginia in November.
UB’s November overtime win at then-13th-ranked West Virginia ranks as the greatest regular-season triumph in UB history. This ranks right behind it as No. 2 on UB’s regular-season win list. Syracuse (7-4) just fell out of the top 25 on Monday.

ACC Roundup - Syracuse Lost At Home As Buffalo Claims The Game And The Carrier Dome Crowd (DBR; King)
Two games Tuesday night, not counting Duke-Princeton, and while Clemson’s win over Charleston Southern was solid (78-51), Syracuse’s home loss to Buffalo was fascinating on several levels.
First was that Buffalo limited Syracuse to 23 second half points. Second was that a much smaller Buffalo team absolutely dominated Syracuse on the boards to a tune of 48-35/18-10. Third was listening to Jim Boeheim say in his post-game press conference that you could say whatever you want “but we’re not good.”
And fourth?
Fourth was very strange. We realize that the students were gone for the holidays, according to the announcers, but Syracuse (forgive us Orange fans but it’s true) is a very provincial town and Orange teams, particularly basketball, are at the heart of the city’s identity.
Yet at the end of the game, an upstate school - we can’t really call them a rival - a region that Syracuse has dominated for ages, was not only pulling away from the Orange in the Carrier Dome...it was dominating the crowd.
There are aspects of Syracuse basketball we don’t admire (the insular quality for one and the 2-3 zone which gets boring in a big hurry for another) but we have never doubted the local passion for the team.

The congratulatory texts were still trickling in as Old Dominion’s players began drifting in to practice Monday afternoon, 48 hours after knocking off No. 25 Syracuse 68-62 Saturday.
After a day off Sunday, the Monarchs were eager to get back in the gym, to build on a win that changed outsiders’ perceptions of what the team might be capable of this season.
Inside the program, however, the win was less a revelation than affirmation that if ODU sticks to its principles, it can play with anyone on a given day.
Even on a day like Saturday, when the Monarchs didn’t necessarily play their best game, committing 16 turnovers and overcoming below-average shooting performances from leading scorers B.J. Stith and Ahmad Caver.

There is something special about this little spot on Oswego's West Main Street. We liked that the kitchen only uses sustainably-sourced ingredients in its dishes. We loved the personality evident in the cocktail names and descriptions; for instance, the entire series named after the seven deadly sins.

A bit out of town, we found a little bistro attached to a vineyard, where excellent food made the drive worthwhile. At the Bistro at Villa Verona Vineyard, the range of offerings includes true small plates, heavier small choices for those who come more for wine than for dinner, and a varied dinner menu from which we chose one of our best meals of 2018.
