Welcome to National Eskimo Pie Patent Day!

Today celebrates the anniversary of the patent of the Eskimo Pie, which is seen as being America's first chocolate-covered ice cream bar. In 1920, a boy had come into Christian Kent Nelson's sweets and candy shop. He ordered ice cream, but then changed his mind and asked for chocolate instead. Nelson asked him why he didn't order both, and the boy said it was because he couldn't afford to—he only had a nickel. Nelson worked to find a way to melt chocolate onto ice cream in such as way so that it would adhere to it, and he found that using melted cocoa butter worked the best. He called his bars "I-Scream Bars," and after they were a hit at the village fireman's picnic, he started searching for companies to manufacture them. He partnered with Russell C. Stover, and they made an agreement where they would split the profits. At Stover's insistence, the name of the ice cream treat was changed to "Eskimo Pie"—a name that evoked the cold north, and the indigenous people that lived there; some today see the name as being culturally insensitive.

Syracuse basketball vs. Miami: 10 things to watch for (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange (13-5 overall, 4-1 in the ACC) will try to win its third game in a row as it hosts Miami (9-8, 1-4) on Thursday at the Carrier Dome.

The game is a critical one with regards to the Orange's upcoming schedule. After facing Miami on Thursday, Syracuse will play its next three games on the road, beginning with a game at Virginia Tech on Saturday.

Miami has had an up-and-down season, winning its first five games, losing the next four, winning three in a row and then losing three in a row.

After a win over Wake Forest for its only ACC victory, Miami lost to North Carolina 85-76 last Saturday.

Here are 10 things to watch for in Thursday's game at the Dome.

Miami's little big man

Miami's Chris Lykes is just 5-feet, 7-inches tall, but he's a much bigger presence on the basketball court.

Lykes, a sophomore from Mitchellville, Md., can impact the game at both ends of the floor. He leads Miami in scoring at 18.1 points per game. He has tremendous range on his jumper. He's making 37.5 percent of his 3-pointers.

On the other end of the court, he's a bothersome defender. He will actually use his size to his advantage to get up underneath a taller ball-handler. Frank Howard, Syracuse's 6-foot-5 point guard, will have to protect the ball as he dribbles when Lykes is on him.

Beat writers predict Syracuse to beat Miami by single-digits (DO; Staff)

Two days before traveling to Virginia Tech, Syracuse (13-5, 4-1 Atlantic Coast) hosts Miami (9-8, 1-4) at the Carrier Dome. The Hurricanes are coming off a loss to North Carolina, while the Orange have won back-to-back games.

Here’s what our beat writers think will happen Thursday night.

Billy Heyen (14-4)
Sunny days ahead
Syracuse 74, Miami 66
SU is coming off a week that might define its season, and don’t expect a slip-up against an undersized Miami team with just one conference win. 5-foot-7 Chris Lykes should cause issues for the Orange, as many star guards have this season. But Syracuse shouldn’t be outclassed by anyone else on Jim Boeheim Court on Thursday night. Expect Tyus Battle to continue his hot scoring against smaller defenders and the Orange to head to Blacksburg on Saturday on a three-game win streak.

Charlie DiSturco (13-5)
Weathering the storm
Syracuse 72, Miami 67
Syracuse is beginning to find its groove and, before a three-game road trip, will face a struggling Miami team. As I’ve said before, winning home games — especially against unranked conference opponents — are a necessity down-the-stretch. The Hurricanes are not a team to take lightly, as their offense ranks No. 62 in adjusted efficiency, per Kenpom.com. Expect this game to go down to the wire with Battle continuing his dominant scoring streak, as the Orange remain atop the ACC heading into Blacksburg.

Syracuse’s next opponent: What to know about Miami (DO; Heyen)

Miami (9-8, 1-4 Atlantic Coast) travels north to take on Syracuse (13-5, 4-1) on Thursday night in the Carrier Dome. The Hurricanes are coming off a loss over the weekend to North Carolina, and their only conference win is against sub-.500 Wake Forest. SU comes off a week where it beat then-No. 1 Duke on the road and Pittsburgh at home.

Here’s what to know about the Hurricanes before Thursday at 8 p.m.

All-time series: Syracuse leads, 18-8

Last time they played: Last Feb. 17, Syracuse beat Miami, 62-55. On the road, SU went into the half tied but pulled away in the second half. All three of the Orange’s leading scorers — Tyus Battle, Frank Howard and Oshae Brissett — played the game’s full 40 minutes. Howard led the way with 18 points and six assists. Brissett added 16 points of his own to go along with 12 rebounds, and Battle contributed 13 points. Marek Dolezaj joined them in double figures with 11 points, his highest scoring output last February.

The Hurricanes struggled to make shots, finishing 20-of-59 from the field and 7-of 31 from 3-point range. Chris Lykes, the Miami point guard who returns for this season, led the Hurricanes with 14 points and four assists. Eventual NBA first-round pick Lonnie Walker added 12 points of his own.

ACC Roundup - State Visits Louisville, But Will Markell Johnson Be Ready? (DBR; King)

On Thursday night there are two games scheduled - NC State at Louisville and Miami at Syracuse.

We don’t hold out much hope for Miami. The ‘Canes are just struggling and their best player right now is 5-7 against a long 2-3 zone he won’t get much penetration and depth is an ongoing concern for Jim Larranaga.

Syracuse was erratic early and we don’t expect they’ll be a great team this season but they have improved. Miami has just struggled. It’s going to be a long season for the ‘Canes and probably a long night Thursday.

Like Jeff Capel at Pitt, Kevin Keatts has done a superb job of changing the culture at NC State. You can probably toss Chris Mack into that as well although he inherits a vastly different program and one that is used to winning and expects to do it.

State is getting that way which is why, even without Markell Johnson, we’re not willing to concede this to Louisville even without Johnson.

It won’t be easy though.

Everyday Dre Day: De'Andre Hunter continues growth as offensive weapon for UVA - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

There’s a simplicity to the game of Virginia’s De’Andre Hunter. One of the best draft prospects in the country, Hunter provides two-way versatility and can basically do everything on the basketball court. He’s fluid offensively and score from all three levels. The blocks (0.4 per 40 minutes) and steals (0.7 per 40 minutes) numbers are surprisingly low, but he’s still an excellent defender — capable of checking four positions and keeping his man in front of him at all times.

Hunter is in the midst of an excellent shooting season (62.5 true shooting rate), too; he’s the only ACC player clearing all of the .500/.400/.800 benchmarks. His mixture as a plus-shooter and low-turnover player (9.3 percent turnover rate, 1.3 per 40 minutes) — along with his defense — makes for a high-floor prospect. Hunter is also the type of player that can fit with any basketball team.

Before he takes on the pros, though, Hunter has at least a few more months clad in Virginia orange and blue. For a program dead set on avenging last season’s ghosts, he’s exactly what Tony Bennett and the Cavs need.

Florida State tops Clemson behind Kabengele (independentmail.com; Ferrante)

Mfiondu Kabengele scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half and David Nichols added 16 points as Florida State halted a three-game slide with a 77-68 win over Clemson on Tuesday.

Nichols made four 3-pointers for the Seminoles (14-5, 2-4 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Florida State came into the game shooting 31.3 percent from beyond the 3-point arc but made 10 3-pointers against Clemson. That’s the most for the Seminoles in an ACC game and one short of the season high.

The Seminoles had a lead in the final three seconds against No. 1 Duke on Jan. 12 but lost 80-78. They then dropped back-to-back road games against Pittsburgh and Boston College.

“This is a very important victory for us – to stop the bleeding,” Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton said. “We were two seconds away from defeating the No. 1 team in the country and then all of a sudden we had an emotional setback.

A big reason undersized NC State has held its own inside? Check out DJ Funderburk. (islandpacket.com; Giglio)

D.J. Funderburk averages more rebounds in the ACC than he did in the Panhandle Conference last season.

Huh? You can strain a brain cell trying to reconcile that statistical anomaly by the N.C. State big man.

It doesn’t make a ton of sense, unless you realize what motivates Funderburk, who has emerged as a key part of the success for No. 21 N.C. State (15-3, 3-2 ACC).

“I’m just trying to make the most of a second chance,” Funderburk said.

So whatever coach Kevin Keatts asks the lanky 6-10, 210-pound sophomore from Cleveland to do, Funderburk tries his best to oblige.

It has been a tall order for Funderburk, one of two healthy and eligible post players on the Wolfpack roster. He will have his hands full against a rejuvenated Louisville (13-5, 4-1) team on Thursday night (8 p.m., WRAL).

The Toast of Syracuse: Stoop and Canastota bakeries join forces (PS; Weaver)

The Toast Canastota is expanding into Syracuse and into a business partnership with The Stoop, the restaurant and bakery that opened in Armory Square a little over a year ago.

The collaboration means Kylie Starkey, a self-taught baker whose pastries attract customers to her family's Madison County bakery from throughout Upstate New York, will start working out of a stand-alone storefront on West Fayette Street on the city's Near West Side.

It means the new Syracuse-based shop -- called The Toast of Syracuse -- will produce the breads and baked goods for the Stoop Bakery in Armory Square, for wholesale customers and for the Toast Canastota.

And, as Stoop owner Eric Alderman sees it, the new partnership could also mean a series of more bakeries throughout the Central New York area.

"We're already looking at two other locations in the Syracuse area," Alderman said last week.

Both the Stoop Bakery Cafe at 311 W. Fayette St., Syracuse, and The Toast Canastota at 139 S. Peterboro St., Canastota, will continue to operate as separate businesses.

But the Toast of Syracuse (and any other Toasts of Other Towns or Villages) will be jointly-owned by Kylie Starkey, her mother, Tonya, and Alderman.

The three said last week they've been working on the partnership since last year.
