When-Hell-Freezes-Over-125382-300x218.jpg

Welcome to Hell is Freezing Over Day!

If you are in the Northern Hemisphere, it's the dead of winter, so it seems more likely that hell would freeze over now than at any other time. This is not necessarily a fun holiday, as on it you are supposed to do all the things you said you wouldn't do until hell freezes over.

"Not until hell freezes over" is an idiom of improbability from the early twentieth century, which stemmed from the belief that hell is a very hot place, and thus will never freeze over. There are many variations on the phrase, such as "It will be a cold day in hell when…" and "There's not a snowball's chance in hell…" Well, the unlikely occurred, hell has frozen over. Get bundled up and ready to celebrate.

Hell is Freezing Over Day is being observed today! It has always been observed annually on January 31st.

Syracuse basketball defeats Boston College 77-71: Brent Axe recap (PS; Axe)

Eagles Clipped

No ACC wins are attained easily, but Tyus Battle sure does make it look that way sometimes.

Battle dropped 31 points for Syracuse against Boston College on Wednesday night in a 77-71 win over the Eagles at the Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Mid-range jump shots. 3-point shots. Reverse layups. Up-and-under drives. Tyus was calling his shots all night against the Eagles. He even logged more time at point guard and dished out a team-high six assists.

The Orange improved to 6-2 in ACC play with the victory. With eight down and 10 to go in league play, Syracuse finds itself in the top half of the conference, but the top-heavy part of its schedule is still up ahead.

Syracuse still firmly in NCAA Tournament in latest bracketology projections - The Juice Online (The Juice; Cheng)

With roughly five weeks and 11 games to go, Syracuse basketball is in crunch time to pad its resume for the NCAA Tournament. Currently, the Orange is widely projected to be on the inside looking out, which has not always been the case in the last few years.

SU’s resume looks like the following:

NET: 49
BPI: 34
SOS: 59
SOR: 46

In terms of the quadrant wins, Syracuse’s win/loss record breaks down like this:

Quad 1: 2-2
Quad 2: 3-2
Quad 3: 4-2
Quad 4: 5-0

The Orange’s best two wins are a non-conference true road win over Ohio State in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge, and then a dramatic overtime in over Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium. On the flip side, Syracuse’s two worst losses right now are to Georgia Tech and Old Dominion, both at home.

Boston College Men’s Basketball Falls to Syracuse 77-71 (bcinterruption.com; Bent)

BC men’s basketball did not have quite enough tonight, and dropped to 11-8 on the season in a 77-71 loss to the Syracuse Orange. The Syracuse zone took away the inside game of Nik Popvic and Johncarlos Reyes for the most part, forcing BC to rely on outside shooting and transition drives. When the outside shot wasn’t there, the Orange were able to wind down the clock on BC and force low percentage shots (and three first half shot clock violations). When the Eagles were able to force turnovers and get defensive rebounds, it openied up transition drives that got the Orange into foul trouble in the first half. The Eagle defense was fairly effective Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett drives in the first half, but the Orange effectively countered by dishing it out to several hot three-point shooters. Chatman and Bowman were not able to match Syracuse’s seven first half threes, an the Orange pushed the lead to 7 at the half.

After two quick buckets that pushed the Syracuse lead to 11 to open the second half, the Eagles were able to find some success driving into the paint and dishing it out to the perimeter. Back-to-back Chatman threes cut the lead in half. While Tyus Battle turned up the heat, Ky Bowman responded with some aggressive transition drives that racked up six Orange fouls by the 11-minute mark. A huge Jared Hamilton dunk brought the Eagles within 2 and had them threatening to take the lead back, but Tyus Battle went off for a pair of threes that swung the momentum back for the Syracuse. Battle would end the night with a game high 31. Jared Hamilton played his best game of the season so far, showing some explosiveness on his drives on his way to a season high 12 points.

Tyus Battle leads Syracuse past Boston College – Boston Herald (bostonherald.com; Thompson)

Tyus Battle won the war.

The junior point guard from Edison, N.J., scored 31 points, 21 in the second half, with four 3-pointers and six assists to lead Syracuse to a 77-71 victory against Boston College last night at Conte Forum.

“I think when you have a great player like that and you give him some teed-up shots early in the game, you get him going,” BC head coach Jim Christian said.

“And to credit him after that, the tough shots come a little easier. They are a tough team to match up against, they have four guys that can all drive it, shoot it, and in the five years I’ve been here, this is the best offensive Syracuse team I’ve ever seen.

“He’s good, he’s a lot to handle. He has mid-range game, he’s explosive and he can get to the basket. We didn’t have great matchups for him, and he had a great game.”

The Orangemen (15-6, 6-2 ACC) shot 55.8 percent from the floor with 11 treys. Freshman guard Buddy Boeheim, son of head coach Jim Boeheim, scored 13 points off the bench.

ACC Roundup - Virginia Tech Moving Up & State Hires A New A.D. (DBR; King)

On Wednesday all three favored teams won in ACC competition: Virginia Tech beat Miami, 82-70, Louisville crushed Wake Forest 82-54 and Syracuse topped BC 77-71.

There wasn't that much that was significant about Virginia Tech’s win. It was Miami’s fourth straight loss and the Hurricanes have now lost seven of their last eight, all against ACC teams.

It was a road win for Virginia Tech and that is significant, but it would have been hard to lose this one frankly.

The Hokies did have some unfortunate news here: Justin Robinson went out with a so-far undefined leg injury and did not return. That could be significant.

Chris Lykes snapped his mini slump and scored 19, which is about what he typically gets.

Golden Corral set to open by early March (PS; Weaver)

Golden Corral, the all-you-can-eat buffet chain, plans to open by early March, according to a post on its Facebook page.

The restaurant posted an update late Tuesday. It said the restaurant off of Midler Avenue now has electricity, and preparations are underway for a late-February or early-March opening.

The North Carolina chain first proposed the Syracuse location in June 2016.

Their AD should have kept Gaudio.

Agree - his record looks great compared to what followed. I didn't realize Dino was now an assistant to Mack at Louisville.
