Welcome to USO Day!

On USO Day we celebrate the anniversary of the United Service Organization that was formed in 1941. The USO shows their appreciation and gratitude to troops (and their families) for the dedication and sacrifices they make. The USO is a non-profit private organization whose mission is "to lift the spirits of America’s troops and their families" (US:confused:rg). Their motto is "Until Everyone Comes Home".

Gutierrez: For Oshae Brissett, it’s looking like the NCAA Tournament all over again (DO; Gutierrez)

Oshae Brissett’s jumper hit the side of the backboard and Pittsburgh pushed up the floor, looking to pounce. “Oh come on,” Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim said after Brissett’s ugly miss. The Oakland Zoo, Pitt’s student section, got louder. The portable bleachers behind the basket rocked. The Orange’s double-digit lead had shrunk to six.

Amid all the chaos of the road sellout, Brissett sought a still moment. At the free-throw line Saturday night, the Zoo chanted “U-S-A!” to Brissett, a native of Canada. He ignored them — he’s dealt with this kind of mockery before — and proceeded to swish his first free throw. He clapped his hands, holding them out in front of him. While making his way back on defense, he blew a kiss and waved his right arm for the whole section to see.

It was an indication that he was comfortable and confident, finishing with 18 points and 12 rebounds in Syracuse’s (16-6, 7-2 Atlantic Coast) 65-56 win over the Panthers. It was his first double-double since Jan. 5 at Notre Dame. Brissett and his teammates agree that he’s capable of a double-double every night. Last offseason, Brissett tweaked his shot looking to make himself a more complete player. But early this season, he hadn’t showed signs of improvement from his breakout freshman year: his finishing was suspect, his outside shot inconsistent. Very little was reminiscent of last March during the NCAA Tournament when he averaged 17.0 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.

Class of 2020 basketball star Andre Jackson plans Syracuse visit: ‘I definitely have a big interest’ (PS; Ditota)

Andre Jackson, the uber-athletic wing from Albany Academy, plans to visit Syracuse Tuesday, when the Orange basketball team plays Florida State in the Carrier Dome.

Jackson, ranked No. 37 in ESPN’s Top 60 players in the Class of 2020, said Saturday he has been trying to arrange an official visit to Syracuse, but overlapping basketball schedules have prevented that from happening. He has twice participated in SU’s Elite Camp and has been offered a basketball scholarship by Orange coaches.

Jackson said he first attracted the attention of Syracuse coaches when the Orange was recruiting former Albany Academy guard Hameir Wright, who ended up at Washington. Jackson has established a close relationship with SU assistant Gerry McNamara, who is his primary recruiter. Jackson considers SU, Connecticut and Iowa the front-runners for his basketball talent thus far; those schools, he said, have recruited him the longest and the steadiest.

“I definitely have a big interest in Syracuse,” Jackson said. “GMac, I probably have one of the closest relationships with him than I do with all the college coaches. I have a real good relationship with the coaching staff. I talk to GMac a lot. He texts me, he calls me. It’s close. I like it. But I’m still thinking about other schools right now. I like Syracuse, but I’m not extremely sure where I’m going to go yet. I’m just trying to take it a little bit slower.”

Syracuse Basketball: Top 5 takeaways from Pitt win on the road (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

The Syracuse basketball team completed the season sweep of the Pittsburgh Panthers on Saturday night, here are the top five takeaways.

Get out the brooms y’all because the Syracuse basketball squad just notched their first SWEEP of the season with their 65-56 win over the Pitt Panthers. The Orange also beat Pitt earlier this season by a count of 74-63 at the Carrier Dome.

This game on Saturday night though had a different path, albeit it with the same ending. This trip to Pittsburgh completed one of the toughest stretches of the season for Syracuse. The Orange had an unusual three game road trip that doesn’t usually occur in the ACC.

Despite a rough start that saw Syracuse blown out at Blacksburg vs VA Tech, Syracuse bounced back with two straight victories over Pitt and the Boston College Eagles. The latest outing puts Syracuse at the halfway mark of conference play, believe it or not.

What position has Syracuse put themselves in? Who was most responsible for this win at the Petersen Events Center? Are the Orange a tournament team? All of those questions are answered in our top-five takeaways from this SU victory over the Panthers here.

How Good is Cuse? Tuesday Night Should Provide Clarity (waer.org; Kalinowski)

Tuesday night’s matchup between Syracuse (16-6, 7-2) and the 25th ranked Florida State Seminoles (16-5, 4-4) will be a measuring stick game for the Orange.

Coming off back-to-back wins, Cuse welcomes a Noles team that is riding a three game win streak of their own. Syracuse defeated Pittsburg 65-56 Saturday night just a couple hours after FSU topped a struggling Georgia Tech team 59-49.

Playing host to a ranked conference foe should provide some clarity for a Syracuse squad that has been unpredictable all season. Is this the Syracuse team that lost to Old Dominion at home? Or the Syracuse team that beat top ranked Duke on the road? Maybe both. It is college basketball after all.

One thing that was confirmed over the weekend is that the Orange are in fact cable of winning without climbing on the back of Tyus Battle. The star guard had just 6 points in the winning effort versus Pitt. Osha Brissett and Frank Howard were able to pick up the slack with 18 and 15 points, respectively. The comfort of the Carrier Dome crowd, and the 36 points he drooped on the Noles last year are two reasons to believe Tyus will redeem himself come Tuesday night.

Syracuse holds on for road win against lowly Panthers – The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

While Syracuse had a few runs in the first half, it was their big second half burst that enabled them to hold off a charge at Pittsburgh Saturday night. The Orange (16-6, 7-2 ACC) stitched together a 16-5 streak in the second half to answer a run of 11 straight points by the Panthers (12-10, 2-7) that made it a three-point game. That response enabled SU to claim a 65-56 road win.

Pitt climbed within 39-36 just under seven minutes into the second half, but Syracuse needed five minutes to regain control. Four different players scored in the span, all of them notching a basket to close the streak with nine straight points.

Just like in the first matchup between the two squads, the 2-3 zone of the Orange caused a world of difficulty for Pittsburgh. That defense permitted the hosts to make only 31.6 percent of their shots, including a meager 22.7 percent on three-point shots. That defensive effort helped SU get the win when they shot just over 32 percent from the field after halftime.

Trailing in the opening minutes, Syracuse posted a 9-1 run to jump in front. Frank Howard made a pair from the line and Paschal Chukwu converted a lob pass into a lay-up. Oshae Brissett made one foul shot and, after a Panther free throw, notched two buckets for an 11-5 Orange lead just under eight minutes into the game.

Just over three minutes later, SU strung together nine straight points for a double-digit lead. Chukwu finished an alley-oop from Marek Dolezaj and Buddy Boeheim connected from well beyond the arc. Dolezaj and Brissett both hit jumpers in the paint to push the Syracuse lead to 22-11.

Divergent Outcomes for Pitt's Terrell Brown, Au'Diese Toney in Return to Lineup (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Saunders)

Pitt guard Au’Diese Toney and power forward Terrell Brown, who head coach Jeff Capel called questionable to play in Saturday’s meeting with Syracuse at Petersen Events Center, both returned to action, but with vastly different outcomes.

Brown, who played just four minutes in Pitt’s loss to Clemson on Tuesday, and did not practice most of this week while battling a strep infection, returned to the starting lineup, played 15 minutes and led the Panthers with 16 points and also grabbed six rebounds.

“When we got back, I probably had a 100 fever,” Brown said. “I didn’t practice the next two days. I stayed in my room the whole day. [Friday], my first back I felt good. Today, I felt good. … I didn’t think I was fighting through anything. I had a little cough.”

His breakout performance, setting a season high in points, drew notice from the opposition.

“Brown really was aggressive today,” Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim said. “He was really good. He did a good job and [Malik] Ellison did a good job of getting him the ball and passing down low.”

Toney, who has been dealing with a right hand injury, did not start and played just 10 minutes off the bench while wearing a protective brace around his thumb and wrist. He did not score and was 0 for 2 from the floor.

Terrell Brown, sore throat and all, shined in Pitt's loss to Syracuse (post-gazette.com; Meyer)

For much of last week, Terrell Brown was sick in a very real way.

While battling strep throat, Brown made the trek to South Carolina with his Pitt team for an 82-69 loss Tuesday against Clemson, playing only four minutes before it became clear his illness was simply too much. After arriving back IN Pittsburgh early Wednesday — the undesirable product of a 9 p.m. tip and, though a chartered flight awaited, a one-hour drive to the nearest airport — he missed practice Wednesday and Thursday, and didn’t even leave his room on either day.

By Friday, he felt much better and by Saturday night, he responded with one of his best games of the season, especially given the circumstances preceding it.

In a 65-56 loss to Syracuse, Brown was one of the few bright spots to which the Panthers could turn for reassurance, as the sophomore center finished the game with a season-high 16 points in 35 minutes.

Clemson pounds Wake Forest for second consecutive ACC win (charlotteobserver.com; Connolly)

Clemson fan favorite Lyles Davis pulled up from well behind the 3-point line late in Clemson’s 64-37 win against Wake Forest Sunday afternoon, and the 5-foot-11 guard’s shot found nothing but the bottom of the net, resulting in the loudest ovation of the day at Littlejohn Coliseum.

It was that kind of afternoon for the Tigers as everything seemed to go right in the 27-point victory that gave Clemson its second consecutive ACC win. Clemson is now 3-5 in league play after getting off to a 1-5 start.

“Just a great win by our guys,” Clemson coach Brad Brownell said. “Really nice to see 40 minutes of quality defense. I thought our energy level was really high and our activity level was great.”

Clemson led 30-18 at halftime and used a 15-2 run to start the second half to put the game away. The Tigers built their largest lead of the game at 29 points on the 3-pointer by Davis, a former walk-on, that sent Littlejohn into a frenzy with under two minutes remaining.

ACC Roundup - NC State’s Epic Stink Bomb Will Smell For Decades To Come (DBR; King)

Let’s start with the weirdness and go from there: what the hell, NC State? How does a competent ACC team manage just 24 points?

We know Virginia likes to do this to people but that’s Virginia. This was against Virginia Tech, the other guys.

You know, the fast ones.

Well, usually.

Virginia Tech managed just 47 points and hit just 16-45 for 35.6%.

As coach Buzz Williams gleefully pointed out though, that was “beautiful” because it was about twice what NC State shot.

Actually somewhat better than that - State hit a pathetic 9-54 for 16.7%. It’s not much to brag about but the Hokies only had six scholarship players available, (Justin Robinson sat out with a foot injury)so maybe it was beautiful.

Kevin Keatts was mystified, calling the numbers “mind-boggling.” It reminded people of NC State’s long-ago 12-10 ACC Tournament win over Duke in 1968 but there was no shot clock then and State was playing deliberate stall ball.

It’ll take forever to live this one down.

To rub it in a bit, Williams explicitly mocked Keatts by saying the team might stop on the way home for ice cream, a trademark for Keatts after road wins.

Short-handed Hokies look to knock off Cardinals in ACC clash (collegiatetimes.com; Shepard)

The Virginia Tech Hokies (18–3, 7–2 conference record) will take on the Louisville Cardinals (16–6, 7–2 conference record) on Monday night in what will be a top 15 ACC clash. The Hokies are still trying to lock themselves in as national contenders, and a win against the Cardinals would go a long way in that regard. As for the Cardinals, they have been one of the more surprisingly strong teams in the country this season despite the expectations of this being a rebuilding year for the program after a series of NCAA recruiting scandals wiped out their recruiting class. A win against Virginia Tech would be their fourth against a top 25 team this season as they continue their school’s history of basketball excellence.

The Cardinals are not a deep team this year, but they have an excellent starting five. They are led in the backcourt by grad transfer Christen Cunningham, whose playmaking and three-point shooting creates a solid backbone for this roster. On the wing, they have junior Dwayne Sutton, who is highly regarded as one of the best defenders in the ACC. The real star of this team is sophomore Jordan Nwora, who has broken out this season as one of the best, most exciting players in the conference, averaging 18.2 points per game and 7.8 rebounds. Nwora has energized this Louisville team with electrifying, highlight-reel dunks nearly every game. The Hokies will have a tough time on both ends against Louisville’s core of young stars.

However, maybe the biggest story of this season for the Cardinals is not their players, but their head coach. When you think of Louisville basketball, you think of legendary coach Rick Pitino, but after his firing two years ago, the program has had to scramble to find new leadership. Enter Chris Mack.

Tennessee basketball: Vols are No.1 in the nation and the SEC thanks to LSU’s loss (allfortennessee.ciom; Williford)

Tennessee basketball won their sixteenth straight game on Saturday night which gave them sole possession of first place in the SEC standings.

It’s about time.

Finally, the No.1 Tennessee basketball team is sitting at the top of the SEC standings. Let me be clear. They have been at the top of the standings all season.

However, thanks to LSU’s 90-89 loss to Arkansas on Saturday night, the Vols sit alone at the top of the standings.

It honestly felt like the Tigers weren’t going to lose a conference game. Game after game, week after week, LSU matched Tennessee win for win, and they were winning with ease.

Here are 30 best buffets in Upstate NY, ranked (PS; Huynh)

#30 Farmers Market Buffet
Location: del Lago Resort & Casino, 1133 Ny-41, Waterloo, NY 13165
Rating: 4.5 stars out of 8 reviews

Customer comment: "They're always busy but it's definitely worth the wait. Friendly waiters and cooks, a great assortment of foods, and everything always seems fresh. They also have a huge drink selection that includes different juices and milks which is great for those of us who don't drink soda since our only other option elsewhere is usually just water!"

#29 Minar Indian Cusine
Location: 1809 5th Ave, Troy, NY 12180
Rating: 4 stars out of 27 reviews

Customer comment: "I have been to Minar Indian Cuisine twice now, and feel compelled to write this review. A couple of weeks ago, I and a colleague stumbled upon this gem in Troy and enjoyed the most wonderful lunch buffet. Everything was flavorful and piping hot. The tandoori chicken was moist, yet perfectly cooked in seasoning. My second venture was last evening for dinner, and Minar didn't disappoint. We ordered five dishes to split amongst us, and everything was cooked to order and absolutely amazing. The tandoori mixed platter arrived sizzling and was thoroughly enjoyable. We also had a variety of naan to accompany our meal. The establishment was clean, and in a trendy part of Troy. We will definitely be back! Best Indian food by far!"

#28 China Pavilion

Location: 2318 W Genesee St., Syracuse, NY 13219
Rating: 4 stars out of 37 reviews

Customer comment: "Coworkers from the Camillus area have said that China Pavilion is the best Chinese food around. While I can think of one or two local spots that would top my list, China Pavilion is up there with them. Hot, fresh food, cozy atmosphere, prompt and attentive service are all reasons to visit China Pavilion and enjoy classic Chinese comfort food. They also serve a Dim Sum on Sundays, which I look forward to attending soon."
