Syracuse basketball vs. Florida State: 10 things to watch for (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange returns from a three-game road trip to host No. 22 Florida State on Tuesday night at the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse, which went 2-1 on the road trip, is 16-6 for the season and 7-2 in the ACC. Florida State has won three straight to improve its record to 16-5 overall and 4-4 in the conference.

Florida State mustered an ugly 59-49 win over pesky Georgia Tech on Saturday, while Syracuse earned a sweep of its season series with Pittsburgh by beating the Panthers 65-56 at the Petersen Events Center.

The game is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. on the Raycom Sports Network.

Here are 10 things to watch for:

Brissett doubles up

In Saturday's win over Pittsburgh, Syracuse sophomore Oshae Brissett led the Orange with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

As a freshman, Brissett recorded 13 double-doubles and had double-digit rebounds in 14 games.

But the double-double at Pitt was just the fifth of the season for Brissett and his first since the ACC opener at Notre Dame on Jan. 5.

Brissett has scored in double-figures in 16 of SU's 22 games this season, but the Orange really needs Brissett to be a presence on the boards, too.

Brissett's ability to rebound will be a key factor against Florida State's huge frontcourt.

SU's schedule gets tougher

Syracuse boasts a 7-2 record at the halfway point of the ACC schedule. Virginia, Duke and North Carolina sit atop the ACC with one-loss records.

But let's view Syracuse's impressive record with some caution. According to the website KenPom.com, The Orange's conference schedule to date ranks 13th in the league.

Of the seven teams that Syracuse has beaten, only one (Duke) has a winning record in league play. The other six have a combined ACC record of 10-33.

Looking at Syracuse's nine remaining games, the Orange will play the four teams currently 1 through 4 in the league standings. Florida State is one of five ranked teams left on SU's schedule. And then they are road games at N.C. State, Wake Forest and Clemson.

Syracuse basketball mostly seeded 8th in latest bracketology projections - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

There are only nine games left in the regular season for Syracuse to polish up its NCAA resume. Since last week, Syracuse has added two solid wins to its resume, both “Quad 2” wins over Pittsburgh and Boston College on the road.

Initially, the Pitt win counted as a Quad 1 win since the Panthers were ranked 69th at the time in the NET rankings, and a Quad 1 win is awarded to a road win over a top 75 NET team. But Pitt has since dropped to 81, sliding SU’s road win back to a Quad 2 win and its home win over them earlier in January to a Quad 3 win.

The Orange is also making some noise in the polls. Though SU is still outside the top 25, they are in the “receiving votes” category, checking in with three votes, which would place them 33rd overall.

In other metrics, Syracuse was ranked 49th in the NET rankings last Tuesday, and with the two road wins is now up to 42. Here’s the remainder of what SU’s NCAA resume looks like:

NET: 42 (+7)
BPI: 31 (+3)
SOS: 59 (No Change)
SOR: 36 (+10)

In terms of the quadrant wins, Syracuse’s win/loss record breaks down like this:

Quad 1: 2-2
Quad 2: 3-2
Quad 3: 7-2
Quad 4: 5-0

ACC Basketball Power Rankings, Week 14: The unstoppable Zion Williamson, Cam Johnson lets it fly, Dwayne Sutton keeps hooping - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

This week’s power rankings are ready to roll. Duke is at Virginia on Saturday; get excited. Before that, a look at a few different ACC Basketball topics: Zion Williamson runs wild (again), Cameron Johnson continues to sizzle from deep, Dwayne Sutton balls for Louisville and Virginia Tech tries to get by sans Justin Robinson.

No. 1 Duke

Duke was absolutely dominant in its home win over St. John’s on Saturday. Tre Jones eliminated Shamorie Ponds, Cam Reddish (4-of-10 3PA) played a wonderful two-way game, Marques Bolden was big and active and, of course, Zion Williamson did Zion Williamson things.

Williamson scored 29 points on 17 field goal attempts (12-of-14 2PA), grabbed five steals and blocked to shots. He also had five dunks and is now shooting 79 percent at the rim (73 FG% in the half court at the basket). Once again, he continues to reaffirm his status as the best draft prospect since LeBron Freaking James, back in 2003. Let that sink in.

This is Duke's 21st game of the season. In 17 of those, Zion has recorded at least 1 steal and 1 block. He has 13 games of 2+ steals and 11 games of 2+ blocks.

This season, Zion Williamson:

47 dunks
41 blocks
44 steals
48 turnovers

Leading Off

No. 2 Duke puts a five-game winning streak on the line Tuesday night, welcoming Boston College to Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Duke is 20-3 in the series against the Eagles, including a 9-0 mark in games at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Following the BC game, the Blue Devils will play four of their next six games on the road where they are one of two undefeated teams on the road this season (Tennessee).
Freshman RJ Barrett, who leads the ACC in scoring at 23.1 points, needs 15 points to reach 10th place on the single-season Duke freshman scoring list. He’s 208 points shy of Marvin Bagley III’s freshman record 694 points.
Over the last four games, freshman Zion Williamson is 43-of-54 (.796) from the field with 102 points. He is second in the ACC in scoring at 22.3. He and Barrett are the highest scoring duo in the country this season at 45.4 points per game.
Williamson is the nation’s only player averaging 20.0+ points and shooting .600+ from the field. He’s also the nation’s only player only player with 40+ steals (44), 40+ blocks (41) and 40+ dunks (42).
Freshman Tre Jones is the nation’s only player averaging 5.0+ assists (5.6), 2.0+ steals (2.1) with a 4.0+ assist-turnover ratio (4.65). His assist-turnover ratio is fourth nationally.
Junior Marques Bolden is averaging 7.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, 23.7 minutes and shooting .590 from the field over the last nine games.
Duke vs. Boston College
Duke and Boston College are meeting for the 24th time, with the Blue Devils leading the all-time series 20-3...Since BC entered the ACC, the series favors Duke, 16-3...The Blue Devils are 9-0 in the series at Cameron Indoor...BC won last year in Chestnut Hill behind 30 points from Ky Bowman, its first win in the series since 2009.

It can’t be overstated just how much damage Jones (three steals) did to Ponds; he managed to make the act of bringing the ball up the court a misery. Ponds is a great player, but he had easily his worst game of the season: 3-of-11 FGA, five turnovers. According to Synergy Sports, Ponds was a combined 1-of-6 from the field with Jones as the primary defender.

Also: The Tre Jones-Zion Williamson two-man wrecking crew — defense to fast break — was in full flight, too. This is one of the most exciting plays/sequences in all of sports.

Is Louisville basketball's Chris Mack the ACC Coach of the Year? (courier-journal.com; Yates)

I’ll be honest, never did I ever think I’d be posing this question this year.

Chris Mack inherited a tough situation — we thought. His first year in Louisville the Cardinals were supposed to at least be competitive against top-25 teams, not beat four of them at this point of the season. This Cardinals team was one some thought would be an NIT team, not potentially a top-4 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

How has this happened? Chris Mack is what’s happened.

Read this: Louisville basketball bounces back with road upset of Virginia Tech

The former Xavier coach took over a roster with little to no playing experience. Veteran players Deng Adel, Quentin Snider, Ray Spalding and Anas Mahmoud graduated and/or put their name in the hat for the NBA. Mack added Christen Cunningham from Samford, Akoy Agau from SMU and Khwan Fore from Richmond with the hopes of them helping and jelling with the young roster of Jordan Nwora, Malik Williams, Dwayne Sutton and Ryan McMahon, just to name a few.

This is now one of the more surprising teams in college basketball.

Monday night’s 72-64 win over Virginia Tech, ranked tenth in the USA Today Coaches Poll, was a very impressive road victory for the Cardinals, but what was more impressive was how they responded after a loss to North Carolina on Saturday where Louisville looked almost uninterested in playing the game.

U of L (17-6 overall, 8-2 ACC) has exceeded many expectations to this point in the season, with a No. 17 ranking in the USA Today Poll. However, how the Cards handle the month of February will be telling. They still have games against Florida State, Duke, Syracuse and Virginia — in a span of the next two weeks — and may suffer a few more losses along the way. But regardless of what happens the rest of the season, I think Mack should be the unanimous ACC Coach of the Year and is even making his case for national coach of the year honors.

Pitt’s Jeff Capel knows something about climbing out of a hole (theundefeated.com; Washington)

When Jeff Capel got the head coaching job at the University of Pittsburgh, one of the first things he told his team was, “Go home.”

It was spring 2018. The Panthers had finished the season 8-24, including an unfathomable 0-19 in the ACC. Kevin Stallings had been fired after two years as head coach. Eight players requested transfers, and the lone high school recruit jumped ship. Just nine years after reaching No. 1 in the polls and coming within a buzzer-beater of the Final Four, Pitt had been held to seven points in the first half of a game. Not a football game. A basketball game.

Players normally stay on campus during the summer to take classes and work out. Capel decided they needed to get away and erase the memory of Pitt’s worst season.

“Then when you come back, let’s be ready to really get after this thing and understand how hard it’s going to be,” Capel recalled telling his players. “No one’s going to feel sorry for us, especially in this league. It’s a very unforgiving league, but we have to fight.”

Capel is counting on that fight to revive Pitt basketball. And this 43-year-old scion of the Duke dynasty actually knows something about climbing up from the bottom.

See before, after photos of renovated Fayetteville historical landmark (photos) (PS; Doran)

Before Don Palumbo set out to do a top-to-bottom renovation of the historical Fayetteville landmark - The Palmer Homestead - he considered what could be preserved in the home and what couldn’t be.

"Literally everything had to be retouched or redone,'' he said. “But we were able to preserve all of the original hardwood floors and interior stairs. However, all the exterior rotted porches and decks had to be removed and completely rebuilt.”

Today, the Palmer Homestead, built in 1804 and expanded in 1825 and one of Fayetteville’s original homes - is completely restored. Work on the property at 7189 E. Genesee St. started in August 2017 and was completed in May 2018.

Palumbo’s company, Revive Syracuse Home Rescue LLC, owns the home and oversaw the restoration. Palumbo said he hired about 15 subcontractors to do the work.

The home was built by the son of Revolutionary War veteran Charles Palmer, and his descendants lived there for about 150 years. Cady Palmer Kepler was born and grew up in the house - which was originally a dairy farm - and he and his wife, Nancy, lived there after they were married. Cady Palmer Kepler’s grandather, Asa, was town supervisor at one time.

Cady Kepler, the son of Cady Palmer Kepler and Nancy Kepler, was the last Palmer descendant to live in the house during the 1960s. He recently toured the property to see the restoration.

The renovated home has a 2,000-square-foot apartment in the back with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, and 2,000 square feet of office space in the front half. The property is listed for sale at $699,000, or the apartment can be rented and the office space leased. There is a tenant in the apartment through July, Palumbo said.
