Welcome to President's Day!

Presidents' Day is officially known as Washington's Birthday, and is a holiday to honor the first president, George Washington, who was born on February 22, 1732. It is a federal holiday, as well as a state holiday in many states. In 1800, the year after Washington's death, the day became an unofficial day of remembrance. The centennial of his birth was a particularly important day of celebration, and the Washington Monument went under construction in 1848. Congress and President Rutherford B. Hayes made Washington's Birthday a holiday in 1879. Originally only federal offices in Washington D.C. were closed, but this was expanded to all federal offices in 1885. At this time the holiday was observed on Washington's actual birthday.

In 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act took effect. It made it so that some holidays, including Washington's Birthday, would be held on Mondays—Washington's Birthday began being held on the third Monday of February, which falls between February 15 and 21, but never on his actual birthday. There had been a provision in the bill to combine Washington and Lincoln's birthdays together for the holiday, but this was eventually dropped. Nonetheless, the day soon became known informally as Presidents' Day, and some believed the new date was chosen to honor both presidents, although that was not the law's intent. By the late-1980s, advertisers began calling it as such, and began pushing for a formal name change. Businesses originally had mainly been closed on the day, but began staying open, and started holding sales. This was particularly true with car dealerships. Many other things tend to function as if the day was a normal day. For example, public transit tends to run as it would if it wasn't a holiday, and colleges and universities tend to hold normal scheduled classes.

Syracuse would be an elite team if its offense were consistent - The Juice Online (the juice; Irvine)

Syracuse’s adjusted defensive efficiency ranks in the top 25 in the country for the ninth time in the last 10 years, according to KenPom.com. SU’s defense is slightly worse than last year, but only 1.4 points per 100 possessions worse.

Syracuse has only had four games this year in which its adjusted defensive efficiency was worse than the D1 average of 102.9 points per 100 possessions. And one of those games the Orange beat Boston College.

Put another way, if Syracuse’s offense could have played at the average D1 level in all of its losses, the Orange would be 22-3. That record would likely have the SU in the top 10 in the country.

Not surprisingly, Syracuse’s offensive inconsistency starts with shooting.

The Orange has had 11 games in which its effective field goal percentage was more than 50 percent, all of which were wins. But in SU’s eight losses, the team’s eFG% has not topped 47.5 percent.

SU has relied particularly heavily on the 3-point shot. In fact, SU has attempted a higher percentage of 3s this season (42.8 percent of shots) than in any season that KenPom.com has a record for, going back to 2001. Unfortunately, only 3 teams in that 19-year span have shot a worse percentage from 3 than this year’s squad.

» Related: Syracuse basketball continues to be plagued by inconsistency

Not surprisingly, SU’s offensive inconsistency starts with the 3-point shot. In games where SU shoots 30 percent or higher from 3, the team is 12-2. Under the 30 percent level, the Orange’s record is 5-6, with two of the victories coming against Morehead State and Eastern Washington.

The good news is that 3-point-heavy offenses inherently involve a high degree of variance. With the strength of SU’s defense, that means if Buddy Boeheim, Elijah Hughes and the Orange’s other shooters get hot, the team could beat any team in the country.

SU will need this high level of variance down the stretch, as it faces a murderer’s row of five Quad 1 games plus a must-win against ACC bottom dweller, Wake Forest.

To make the NCAA Tournament, the Orange will likely need at least 3 wins. KenPom.com gives the SU a 44 percent chance at home against Louisville on Wednesday, and a 77 percent shot on the road against Wake.

If the Orange can pull those two out, it will either need to beat Clemson on the road (33 percent chance), or one of Duke, North Carolina or Virginia. KenPom gives the Orange a 44 percent chance of winning at least one of these three games.

Ten Syracuse Basketball Players Who Should Have Jersey Retired (247sports.com; McAllister)

Syracuse football is set to retire the jersey of Tim Green this fall, and accordingly we created a list of 10 other football players who deserve the same honor. Syracuse basketball has plenty of all-time greats that also deserve to have their jersey retired. Currently, 14 former Orange players have been honored by the basketball program. They include Rony Seikaly (4), Vic Hanson (8), Carmelo Anthony (15), Billy Gabor (17), Wilmeth Sidat-Singh (19), Sherman Douglas (20), Lawrence Moten (21), Dave Bing (22), Dennis DuVal (22), Billy Owens (30), Pearl Washington (31), Derrick Coleman (44), Roosevelt Bouie (50) and Louis Orr (55).

Here is our list of 10 other basketball players who should be honored by the school.

PG ADRIAN AUTRY (15)

Current Associate Head Coach on the Syracuse basketball staff, Adrian Autry was a former four year starting point guard for the Orange in the early 1990's. During that time, he was an exceptional point guard who brought a combination of scoring and passing to the position with a 6-foot-4 frame. He was also one of Syracuse's best rebounding guards in the Jim Boeheim era.

During his career, Autry averaged 12.7 points, 5.2 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game. Autry also averaged nearly two steals per game and scored over 1,500 points during his career. He is fifth on the all-time assists list in Syracuse history, 20th on the scoring list, and seventh on the steals list.

C JON CINCEBOX (42)

An often forgotten man in the annals of Syracuse basketball history, center Jon Cincebox was one of the best centers to play with the Orange. He helped lead Syracuse to their first NCAA Tournament appearance as a sophomore in the 1956-67 season. Cincebox is the all-time Syracuse leader in rebounds per game at 14.6. When he finished his Syracuse career, he was the program's all-time leading rebounder with 1,004. That record stood for 30 years until Derrick Coleman broke it. He still remains the only player in program history to accumulate 1,000 rebounds in only three seasons.

Overall, Cincebox was an elite rebounder and prolific scorer. He averaged 15.8 points per game, scoring nearly 1,100 in total. He put up monster numbers as a junior and senior. During his junior year, Cincebox averaged 19.1 points and 16.4 rebounds per game. As a senior, he put up 19.0 points and 15.9 boards each time out.

PF RUDY HACKETT (45)

Rudy Hackett was one of the best scoring/rebounding forwards in Syracuse history. The 6-foot-9 power forward from Mount Vernon (N.Y.) averaged over 17 points and 11 rebounds per game during his Orange career. That culminated by his remarkable senior campaign of 22.2 points and 12.7 rebounds per game. He was also a career 55% shooter from the floor.

Hackett was an integral part of the 1974-75 Syracuse team that produced the first Final Four appearance in program history. He was the Orange's leading scorer on that team. Hackett is still sixth on the Syracuse all-time rebounds list.

Miami basketball tries for first 2019 ACC road win at Boston College (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

Coming off a last-second victory at home over Clemson the Miami basketball team travels to Boston College trying to win its first ACC game on the road in 2019.

The Miami basketball team has played its best in the ACC over their last four games. The Hurricanes have won two of their last three games, were competitive at Virginia two weeks ago and lost in overtime at North Carolina last Saturday. Miami enters Sunday night’s game at Boston College 11-13 overall, 2-9 in the ACC.

Boston College has also had a disappointing season. The Eagles are 12-11, 3-8. A win by Miami would vault them over BC and Notre Dame in the ACC Standings to tenth. It would also give them the tiebreaker over the Eagles and Fighting Irish. Teams 10-15 in the ACC play in the first round of the tournament.

Clemson is currently in ninth, 5-7 in the ACC. Miami also owns the tiebreaker over the Tigers after Wednesday night’s victory. A Zach Johnson runner to the left of the lane with 0.3 seconds remaining gave Miami the victory.

Boston College broke a four-game losing streak on Tuesday night with a home victory over Pittsburgh. The Eagles had lost nine of their previous 11 games. That included a loss to Hartford in Chesnut Hill to end their non-conference schedule.

ACC Roundup - BC Shows Heart & A Big Rivalry Game Monday Night (DBR; King)

In Sunday’s only ACC game Boston College beat Miami 64-57.

Boston College has shown a certain resilience this year that’s quite admirable. Saturday Ky Bowman had a 102 degree ever and while he played his usual ironman minutes, he only scored six points and shot just 3-11. He did have eight rebounds and eight assists however.

Jordan Chatman hit for 17 and Nik Popovic had 15 points and 14 rebounds. Yes, it’s against Miami and yes the Hurricanes have a limited frontcourt but that doesn’t take away from the fact that the young big man has continued to improve.

Boston College is just 13-11 but that team has shown some real heart. As we’ve said before, Jim Christian has shown a knack for finding underapprecaited talent and then developing it. We hope his bosses appreciate the considerable skills he has shown even if his record doesn’t reflect it.

Compare what he’s done in a tough situation to what Danny Manning has done. BC is immensely more impressive.

Only one game on Monday and it’s between rivals Virginia and Virginia Tech. We’d feel a lot better about the Hokies if Justin Robinson was playing but we don't expect him to and certainly he won’t be 100%.

Virginia crushed Virginia Tech in Charlottesville, winning by 22.

Still, it won’t surprise us at all if it’s a close game and while an upset would be a tall order, emotions run high in rivalry games so don’t rule it out just yet. But don’t be on it.

FSU Basketball gets lucky with release of future ACC schedules (chopchat.com; Parker)

FSU Basketball avoided having a single year being fully loaded with more games against tougher foes when the future schedules were released Thursday.

There is no doubt that, year in and year out, the FSU basketball team has to deal with one of the toughest schedules in all of college basketball – one of the “perks” if you will that comes with being a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. So far this season, the Seminoles have played ranked foes like Duke, Virginia and Louisville are among the foes.

The Noles knew what they were getting into when they joined the conference, and now they know what the schedules will look like when it comes to conference play for the next three seasons – and for the sake of head coach Leonard Hamilton and his team, FSU basketball might have just gotten lucky when it comes to having an even chance.

The ACC revealed the foes for each of the 15 basketball members schools as part of the new 20 game conference schedule that will start next season, with each team facing six teams twice a year as well as four other teams once at home and four others once on the road. Each season, the Seminoles will face Clemson and Miami twice as their primary foes.

2019-20 Season
Home and Away Foes: Clemson, Miami, Louisville, Notre Dame, Pitt, Virginia
Home Foes: Boston College, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Syracuse
Away Foes: Duke, N.C. State, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest

2020-21 Season
Home and Away Foes: Clemson, Miami, Boston College, Georgia Tech, UNC, Syracuse
Home Foes: Duke, N.C. State, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest
Away Foes: Louisville, Notre Dame, Pitt, Virginia

2021-22 Season
Home and Away Foes: Clemson, Miami, Duke, N.C. State, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest
Home Foes: Louisville, Notre Dame, Pitt, Virginia
Away Foes: Boston College, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Syracuse

Now, I’m not sitting here for a second and saying that FSU basketball will go through a season undefeated at all in ACC play – but not having to play arguably the three best teams in the conference right now (Duke, North Carolina and Virginia) twice in a single season is beyond beneficial to the Seminoles.

What also helps the Noles is being grouped with both the Tigers and Hurricanes, two teams that have had good years recently but seem to be struggling this year and look like they are heading toward the downside of things.

Campbell’s Chris Clemons Passes 3,000 Career Points (DBR; King)

The ACC has had some wonderful small guards over the years. From Monte Towe to Spud Webb, Muggsy Bogues and Boogie McIntyre, the ACC has always found room for talented short players.

Currently the conference can boast Miami’s 5-7 Chris Lykes and Virginia’s 5-9 (if you buy that) Kihei Clark.

The ACC does not have Chris Clemons though and that’s too bad.

On Saturday, Clemons, who chose Campbell after finishing high school in Raleigh, passed the 3,000 point barrier for career scoring.

Among the guys he passed?

Oscar Robertson.

We’re not suggesting he’s as good as the Big O. But could he start for Wake Forest? Clemson? Boston College?

Of course he could.

He would have been great at NC State too.

And consider this: the Wolfpack - this goes to Mark Gottfried, not Kevin Keatts - not only missed on hometown product Clemons, but also on Jerome Robinson, who went to Boston College and became a lottery pick.

Most coaches don’t use all their scholarships. So why not take a chance on a small guy? The worst thing that could happen is that you get a useful practice player.

And if things work out, you get a Towe, a Bogues or, perhaps, a Clemons.

1899: A Syracuse sledding carnival ends after ‘soft snow and rowdyism’ (PS; Croyle)

In the years before the automobile, Syracuse, with its many hills and perfect winter climate, must have been a sledding enthusiast’s dream.

In the years leading up to the 20th century, coasting carnivals were held during the winter in Syracuse.
They were giant civic events, in which teams of bobsleds raced down Syracuse streets to settle which sledders could go, or “coast,” the furthest and the fastest.

On Feb. 15, 1899, a coasting carnival was to be held on the Irving Avenue hill and it was expected to be a great event.
“The committee in charge of the affair are doing all in their power to make this affair a success,” the Syracuse Evening Telegram wrote, “and it will be an event seldom seen in Syracuse.”

Teams signed up at Ogden’s Drug Store, in two classes depending on the size of their sled.

First place was to be a silk pennant inscribed with the words “Coasting Championship 1899.” Other prizes included sweaters, canvas leggings, a necktie, gloves, a toboggan cap and boxes of candy.

Cold weather the past few weeks, in addition to the hill being “well flooded” meant the course was to be thought to be in perfect condition as the big day approached.

The carnival was to be a “brilliant spectacle,” said the Post-Standard and residents of Irving Avenue planned to “set off fireworks and burn colored fire during the evening.”
